Biggest comeback in Elite history – Bassmaster – 4-22-13

By Deb Johnson
APR 22, 2013
BULL SHOALS, Ark. — Two days ago on the Ramada Quest stage, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Jason Christie bemoaned the crystal water and dead-calm conditions of Bull Shoals Lake.

“Clear water and no wind scares the heck out of me,” said the Elite Series rookie from Park Hill, Okla., on that second day of competition. He dropped from fourth place into 14th. It was a serious fall in what had become the “ounces-count” Quest.

If Christie was scared, he was scared straight. On the third day, he managed to climb up into 11th place and qualify for Monday’s fourth and final round. He was 5 pounds, 6 ounces behind the leader.

Monday at the weigh-in, he showed what having the fire under you can do. He turned in a huge bag, the tournament’s largest: 18 pounds, 0 ounces. Christie landed squarely in the winner’s seat, with his first Elite Series trophy. It came with $100,000 and his second consecutive Bassmaster Classic qualification.

“Awesome,” said Christie about his secure return to the Classic. “I was hooked on it last time, and I’m ready to go again.”

Christie’s winning weight was 56 pounds, 8 ounces. His Day Four bag of five largemouth of 18-0 included two 4-pounders and a 5-0, the largest bass of the day.

His margin of victory was 1 pound, 2 ounces over Fred Roumbanis of Bixby, Okla. That was a notable achievement given that the Day Three leader, Casey Scanlon, led by 12 ounces, and the Day One and 2 leader, Greg Vinson, led by 1 pound and by 3 ounces, respectively.

Christie’s leapfrog from 11th into first place was the biggest Day Four comeback in Elite Series history. (Arkansas pro Kevin Short rose from sixth place to win the 2009 Mississippi River Elite event.)

Lake Anna Lake Report – Updated April 15th 2013

RECENT_CATCHES_087

This has been an outstanding week for crappie fishing on Lake Anna!!!!!! There were 2 citation crappie weighed in at Fish Tales. A 2lb 2oz beauty that was caught by David Keys and a 2lb even that was caught by CCBASSN Lake Anna Guide Service client, Zack Barnes, while fishing with associate guide Brian Oxendine.

Chris Craft, Owner of CCBASSN Lake Anna Guide Service reported that in 23 hours of fishing time (4 trips), his clients boated ovrt 330 Crappie. The largest was 1lb 14oz and 14 1/2″.
Over 80% of those fish were caught on artificial bait!!!!!!!!

BASS- The bass have started moving up in droves to bedding areas. There were several nice fish caught this past week. Soft Jerk Baits & Tiger Shad Spinner Baits are the top producers when these fish really start heading to the shallows. Burton Minnows in either CC Shad or CC Special and Tiger Shad Spinner Baits in the Purple Tiger pattern are my top choices.

Square bill crank baits have there place as well. In shallow stained water, the Rhino Tuff 1.5 and 2.5 in the Crafty Black Crappie color are hard to beat. Fish these around the edge of grass lines, beaver huts and lay downs where crappie are present. Later in the month the Blue Gill will be heading to the shallows to spawn, I will switch to the HOt Gill color when the happens.

There are still some pre-spawn fish hanging out in deeper water. Carolina Rigged Lizards and my favorite, Arson Jigs, work well on main lake points and drop offs.

CRAPPIE- FULL BLOWN SPAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the only 3 words that I have to say. Fish small minnows and 2″ Kalin Grubs around Willow Grass lines, Beaver Huts, Lay Downs, Boat Docks and shallow Rock Piles. The fish are shallow and will be that way for another couple of weeks.

STRIPER- The Linesides are way up in the rivers on their spawn run. Large Gizzard Shad id the bait of choice. If You would like to cast to them with artificial bait, the Power Team Lures 4.8 Swinging Hammer is an outstanding choice. The large paddle tail disturbs a lot of water and the swimming action action is great. Look for them above the 522 bridge in the North Anna & from the S-Turn to the 522 Bridge on the Pamunkey side.
