Reins Punching Predator Review

This punching, flipping and pitching bait is quite durable and holds a big hook with ease

I can remember when I first started buying my own fishing tackle as a child. It was really overwhelming—especially when it came to soft plastics. I often found myself buying the craziest shapes I could find because I figured the more wiggly and expensive they were, the more fish they’d catch. Before I knew it, I was one broke, scrawny and frustrated young fisherman.

It’s funny how my experience has changed things, though. I’ve now caught some of my biggest bass on the simplest soft plastic baits you can imagine. If you were to look in my boat these days, you’d probably be surprised by the relative plainness of my soft plastics collection.

I’ve had an opportunity to fish with the Reins Punching Predator for the past several months. It’s not the sexiest-looking bait you’ll find. It doesn’t have a bunch of appendages and it doesn’t come in flashy packaging. But it’s simplistic design incorporates some really interesting design features that make it a legit flipping and pitching bait.

Nichols Ben Parker Magnum Spoon Review

If the bait is large and bass are aggressive, this big flutter spoon is a great choice for deep bass

I like big spoons. A lot. I’ve been throwing a bigger spoon than most for a couple years. I thought it was cool because it was big. But, I really didn’t know what big was until the Nichols Ben Parker Spoon hit the market last year. It came out right as anglers descended on Kentucky Lake for the FLW Tour. We talked a little bit about its impact then in our current trends article in 2014. But since that time I’ve been able to fish and review the spoons on our own.

There are several things that immediately stand out about the spoons. And it’s not difficult to ascertain that these spoons won’t be for everyone or work everywhere you bass fish. But where the bait is large, the bass are aggressive and the competition is fierce, these things are a heck of a lot of fun.

McMillan Grabs Southern Open Lead On Finicky Toho

780x600_img_0259(1)

Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla., lead on Day 2 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open #1 presented by Allstate held on Lake Tohopekaliga out of Kissimmee, Fla. McMillan brought 13 pounds, 15 ounces to the scales at Friday’s weigh-in.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Florida’s fickle bass not only played with the heads of the first-round leaders in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open presented by AllState, but they also scrambled the leaderboard.

On a day when the sun shined and the fish were supposed to bite, big bags were few and far between. That was just fine for Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla., whose 13-pound, 15-ounce limit gave him a two-day total of 38-8, good enough to move him from third to first.

To illustrate how goofy fishing was Friday, New York’s Andrew Slegona – who caught 31 pounds to lead the event after the first day, only had two small bass Friday but fell no further than fourth (34-9).

“Man, hard to believe that I could stay in the Top 5 with a day like that on a lake like this,” Slegona marveled.

Meanwhile, Todd Auten of South Carolina jumped from 13th to second (36-8), Bobby Lane of Florida moved from 18th to third (34-13) and Gerald Swindle of Alabama climbed from 17th to fifth (34-3). Only 4 pounds, 5 ounces separate the Top 5 who will join seven other anglers in Saturday’s final.

In the co-angler division, Floridian Alan Agnoli stunned the crowd with three bass weighing 17-11 to take the lead with 24-15. Other Floridians in the Top 5 among co-anglers include Steve Jarrett (18-2), Robbie Anderson (17-13), Terry Law (17-10) and Daniel Lanier (17-9).

McMillan admits he was just “scrounging round” to catch the fish that put him in the lead Friday.

“I knew I couldn’t duplicate what I did yesterday because I beat on them pretty hard,” he noted. “So today I was doing a little bit of everything from flipping to swimming a jig to catch what I caught.”

Lane, who calls the Kissimmee Chain his home waters, said the water temperature dropped 5 degrees after Thursday night’s cool-off and rain, and that left the bass in a tizzy. His 20-pound, 6-ounce sack Friday was one of the biggest and was anchored by a 9-8.

“It really helps knowing the lake and how these fish react when you get fishing conditions like this,” said Lane. “The fish really want to spawn, but the water just hasn’t been right for them to get it going.”

McMillan’s second-day leadership earned him the $250 Livingston Lures Leader Award. Agnoli captured the same title among co-anglers, pocketing a Livingston Lures gift pack worth $250.

Ohioan Charlie Hartley recovered from a bad first day to win the Allstate Good Hands, Great Day award ($250) for moving from 158th place to 17th, thanks to a 20-pound, 15-ounce limit, the largest in the pro division.

Among co-anglers, Mike Spears of Jasper, Ala., moved from 115th to 30th to garner $150 from Allstate.

The tournament takeoff on Saturday is at 7 a.m. ET at Big Toho Marina. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at the Bass Pro Shops in Orlando at 4 p.m.

NetBait Mad Paca Review by Walker Smith

NetBait Mad Paca Review

NetBait Mad Paca Review

This soft plastic creature bait has proven to be versatile, durable and effective for bass fishing

I’ve always believed that many anglers make their soft plastic selection process much more difficult than it needs to be. We’ll sit there for several minutes, just staring at dozens of bags as if we’re awaiting a miraculous epiphany of some sort. This wastes a bunch of time and overcomplicates a fairly simple decision.

For this very reason, I make an effort to use versatile baits. If a soft plastic can serve multiple purposes throughout the year, I’m all over it. I want to maximize my fishing time and minimize complication to the best of my ability.

I’ve been fishing with the NetBait Mad Paca for a long time and it has quickly become a major staple in my boat. I’ve rigged it and fished it every way imaginable and it continues to produce, even on tough days of fishing.

Slegona’s Florida Baptism Produces Big Sack, Southern Open Lead

780x600_day_1_leader4

Jan. 15, 2015

Andrew Slegona takes the lead on Day 1 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open #1 presented by Allstate held on Lake Tohopekaliga out of Kissimmee, Fla., with 31 pounds, 2 ounces.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Andrew Slegona’s first fishing trip to Florida is off to a memorable start.

The Walker Valley, N.Y., angler jumped to the first-day lead in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open #1 presented by Allstate on Lake Tohopekaliga with a whopping 31 pounds, 2 ounces.

The former construction worker, who built subway tunnels in New York before pursuing a career in pro fishing, was aided by a pair of lunkers weighing 9-1 and 8-10. He had his big bag by 10:30 in the morning.

“I caught them out of one area and never saw a boat come within 300 yards of where I was fishing,” said Slegona, who spent last week fishing nearby Florida waters to tune up for the event. “I found this spot in practice, and today I realized I was really onto something.”

Slegona said he was flipping hydrilla in 10 feet of water.

“The thing is, this is a morning spot, and I hope they’re in there tomorrow (Friday), too,” he added.

Two-time Bassmaster Junior World Champion Joey Nania of Cropwell, Ala., is second with 25-1; Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla., had 24-9; Garrett Rocamora of Lithia, Fla., 24-4; and Brad Knight, Lancing, Tenn. 20-13.

Nania’s sack was even more impressive considering it also included a pair of scrawny 1-pounders, but was helped with bass weighing 8-3 and 8-12.

“I’ve always struggled here. I’ve had so many let-downs fishing in Florida, this really felt good,” he said. “I had been fishing fast, covering a lot of water, but when my co-angler caught a good one fishing slow, I decided to slow it down. That’s when I caught the 8-12 and figured it out.”

Daniel Lanier Jr. of Winter Springs, Fla., topped the co-angler division with three bass weighing 11-9. Craig Cullen of Vero Beach, Fla., was second with 11-4; and Steve Jarrett of Valrico, Fla., was third with 11-2.

Rocamora set the bar for the Carhartt Big Bass prize with an 11-9 brute. Brock Mosely of Mississippi had the second biggest bass, a 9-15.

Despite the number of 8-pound-plus bass caught on Thursday, the overall weights were down. Fiftieth place was only 10-10. Cooling weather with overcast conditions hampered the bed fishing activities and, as some anglers said, the fish were scattered.

“The water is high and the fish are hard to pinpoint,” said Bassmaster Elite Series pro Terry Scroggins, in eighth place. “The sun is supposed to shine tomorrow, and that will help position the fish in areas where we can catch ’em better.”

The competitors will take off each day at 7 a.m. ET at Big Toho Marina. Weigh-ins will be held at 3 p.m. ET at the marina Friday, but the final weigh-in on Saturday will be held at the Bass Pro Shops in Orlando at 4 p.m. ET.

Fenwick Elite Tech Casting Rod Review

Fenwick Elite Tech Casting Rod Review

The new Elite Tech bass fishing rods from Fenwick are sensitive, lightweight and super comfortable during long days on the water

Have you seen the new Fenwick Elite Tech technique-specific casting rods? I’m pretty sure you’ll want to. Some will remember a Fenwick Elite Tech line from about 8 years ago. Here’s a little behind these rods and what I found with the new ones I’ve been testing.

Fishing rods come and go. It seems like some rod lines are here one year and gone the next season. While other rod lines have been through 8-10 iterations. There are some old rods I wish they still made and some new rods I wish they never did. But lately there has been a lot more good rods entering the market. That’s a great thing for anglers.

Fenwick designed the first ever “technique-specific” bass rod when they invented the first “flipping stick.” Now some 40 years later, they have come full circle with a full line of technique rods in a wide range of powers, actions and lengths to fit just about every technique in bass fishing.
