2015 Opens schedule announced – Bassmaster.com

2015 Opens schedule announced

Elite Series event on Lake St. Clair rescheduled

James Overstreet
Fort Gibson Lake is the site of Central Open #2 on September 10-12, 2015.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The 2015 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens tournament series will span nine months, visit nine states and possibly provide nine professional anglers a ticket to the Super Bowl of bass fishing — the Bassmaster Classic.

B.A.S.S. announced the three-division, nine-tournament Opens schedule today, noting that it kicks off with the Jan. 15-17 Southern Open No. 1 on Lake Tohopekaliga at Kissimmee, Fla., and concludes Oct. 22-24 with the final Southern Open on Lake Seminole at Bainbridge, Ga.

The company also announced that the eighth Bassmaster Elite Series tournament for 2015 — the St. Clair Elite at Detroit, Mich., has been moved from its originally announced dates of Sept. 24-27 toAug. 27-30, 2015.

“These lakes and rivers are all outstanding, legendary waters that are steeped in bass fishing history,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “Four of the lakes and rivers have hosted the Bassmaster Classic in years past, and seven are ranked on Bassmaster’s Best 100 Lakes list for 2014. The Bass Pro Shops Opens have become extremely popular among tournament anglers over the years, and the selection of fisheries this year should make it even more attractive.”

B.A.S.S. Senior Tournament Manager Chris Bowes noted that tournaments in each of the three divisions typically fill rapidly, with waiting lists forming in a matter of hours.

“We expect spots in the Opens to go just as quickly this year,” said Bowes, who noted that the events reward anglers in several ways.

“Many fish the Opens in hopes of winning a berth in the Bassmaster Classic,” he said. “Some are trying to qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series, and of course everybody is fishing for the payouts.” The winner of each event will get $46,400, including a bass boat and motor, plus an invitation to compete in the 2016 Classic, contingent upon the winner fishing all three events in that division.

Competitors earn performance points at each tournament, and the Top 5 in each division are invited to join the Elite Series the following year. In recent years, nearly all who received Elite bids have joined the prestigious tour.

At each of the stops, weigh-ins will be held lakeside during the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday of each tournament week. The 12 finalists who earn the right to fish on Saturday will weigh their catches in front of large crowds at nearby Bass Pro Shops stores.

Registration for B.A.S.S. Nation and Life members begins online on Nov. 4. Other details and complete registration information will be posted on Bassmaster.com.

Southern Opens

No. 1 — Lake Tohopekaliga at Kissimmee, Fla., Jan. 15-17

Lake “Toho” has hosted 18 Bassmaster events, including Classics in 1977 and 2006. The one-day catch record of 45 pounds, 2 ounces, for five bass was set there by Dean Rojas in 2001, and the heaviest bass ever weighed in during a Classic, 11-10 by Preston Clark in 2006. The Kissimmee Chain of Lakes ranked No. 21 on Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes list in 2014.

No. 2 — Alabama River at Prattville, Ala., April 16-18

The first B.A.S.S. tournaments to be held on the Alabama River were Bassmaster Classics in 1981 and 1982, and they featured the first indoor weigh-ins. Kevin VanDam won two of his seven Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year titles in postseason competition on the river, and Edwin Evers won a Bassmaster Elite Series event there in 2013 with more than 75 pounds for four days of fishing.

No. 3 — Lake Seminole at Bainbridge, Ga., Oct. 22-24

Lake Seminole has been a popular venue for Bassmaster tournaments for 45 years. Brett Hite was the latest to win there, claiming the 2014 Elite Series season opener with just less than 100 pounds for four days. The 2010 Open on Seminole, also held in October, gave up 44-2 for the winner, Trevor Fitzgerald. The 37,500-acre lake ranks 17th among the Best 100 lakes in the nation.

Central Opens

No. 1 — Ross Barnett Reservoir at Ridgeland, Miss., March 12-14

In 1978, Bobby Murray won his second Classic title on Ross Barnett, which already was a storied tournament lake for B.A.S.S. pros by that time. More recently, Randall Tharp qualified for the 2014 Classic with a win there in 2013. Ross Barnett, 33,000 acres in size, ranks among the top 100 lakes in the country.

No. 2 — Ft. Gibson Lake at Wagoner, Okla., Sept. 10-12

Oklahoma pro Jason Christie won his second Open of the 2012 season on Ft. Gibson. He qualified for the Classic and the Elite Series that same year through the Northern Opens. If Tommy Biffle is in the field, he’s one to watch; Biffle won an Elite event there in 2010 and has fished the lake for 40 years. The 19,900-acre Ft. Gibson is No. 65 on the Best 100 Lakes list.

No. 3 — Table Rock Lake at Branson, Mo., Oct. 1-3

Table Rock featured two recent Opens in 2011 and 2012, won by Elite Series anglers Kevin Short and Casey Scanlon. Table Rock Lake cover 43,000 acres and is No. 68 on Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes of 2014.

Northern Opens

No. 1 — James River at Richmond,Va., July 9-11

The Bassmaster Classic was held on the James out of Richmond three years in a row (1988-90), and they were among the most memorable in history. Hank Parker claimed the title in 1989, after Jim Bitter let the winning fish slip from his fingers, and Rick Clunn won his fourth Classic on the James in 1990. In 2013, Alabama’s Randy Howell won an Open on the James to qualify for the 2014 Classic on Lake Guntersville — which he won.

No. 2 — Oneida Lake at Syracuse, N.Y., Aug. 6-8

Boyd Duckett won the 2012 Elite Series finale on Oneida with 62-6, edging Randy Howell by just 6 ounces. Another Elite pro, Ish Monroe, won a Northern Open on Oneida in 2011. Bassmaster Magazine ranked Oneida 41st among the nation’s top bass fisheries. It spans more than 50,000 acres.

No. 3 — Lake Erie at Sandusky, Ohio, Sept. 24-26

Michael Iaconelli earned his 2014 Classic berth with a win there in 2013. Before that, Nate Wellman won in 2011. Always a popular stop for both Elite and Opens anglers, Erie ranks No. 56 on the Best 100 Lakes list.

CASHION FISHING RODS 'END OF YEAR' TEAM BASS TRAIL QUALIFIER #7 RESULTS Saturday October 11th, 2014

1011-141st1st Place: Scott Woodson & Austin Randall of Fuquay Varina…5 bass…34.10 lbs

1011-142nd

2nd Place: Jaime Fajardo & Josh Hooks of Fuquay Varina…5 bass…24.25 lbs

A record was just broken for Piedmont Bass Classics (as far back as I can remember) in the Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail Qualifier #7 at Shearon Harris this past Saturday! 27 teams showed up on just a perfect day! The weather was beautiful! Air temps were about 68 in the am and around 84 in the afternoon. The wind was light and variable up to 15 mph at times. Water temps averaged 73 degrees. The most fish were caught shallow early on but once the sun popped out most were caught suspended in 20′ of water. Crankbaits, plastics, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, Rat-L Traps and Topwater took their toll on the rest of the fish.Scott Woodson & Austin Randall, both of Fuquay Varina brought in the heaviest bag of 5 bass I rememberseeing in our PBC events over the years, 34.10 lbs.! They took 1st Place, 1st Place Big Fish (7.21) & TWT for a grand total of $1,663.

Jaime Fajardo & Josh Hooks, Harris regulars, took 2nd Place & 2nd Place TWT with 5 bass weighing 24.25 lbs. Tony Woodard & Scott Smith had 2nd Place Big Fish at 5.51. Jaime Fajardo also won the Tow Boats US Member Award of $50. 54 bass were weighed in for a total of 165 pounds. This averaged a little over 3 lbs. a fish and most looked healthy. This was our last event at Harris for 2014, but we’ll be back in February 2015 to get back at those hawgs!
I want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our sponsors that support these trails. Our next tournament will be the Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail Final Qualifier #8, Saturday, October 25th at Falls Lake out of Ledge Rock Wildlife Ramp.

The dream season By Randy Howell – Bassmaster.com

The dream season

Darren Jacobson

Just about every angler dreams about what it would be like to be the Classic champion and I have as well, but until you reach that goal there’s simply no way to prepare for it. Over the course of the past eight months I have been humbled time and time again by the opportunities that have been presented to me and the genuine well wishes of the other pros and our great fans.

Recently a radio interviewer asked me how the “year after” experience compared to my expectations and I had to say that in every respect it has exceeded them. I feel truly blessed to have been given this opportunity as a fisherman, and to spread my faith-based message.

PAA Board calls off 2014 Tournament Series

The PAA Board of Directors has decided to cancel the 2014 PAA Tournament Series. After postponing the 2014 PAA opener originally slated for September 25-27 on Douglas Lake in Dandridge, Tennessee, the Board has also cancelled its remaining 2 PAA events on October 9-11, 2014 at Kentucky Lake, Gilbertsville, KY and November 20-22, 2014 on Toledo Bend Reservoir, Hemphill, TX. The PAA Tournament Series will not take place this year.

About the PAA Tournament Series

Starting with a single event on Choke Canyon, TX in 2008, the PAA Tournament Series has been operated for 5 years from 2009 through 2013 as a 3- or 4-event series culminating in the Toyota Texas Bass Classic world championship each season. The PAA was responsible for helping to establish the Toyota Texas Bass Classic and over the last eight years, this conservation-focused catch and release charity event has generated over $2 million in donations for the benefit of Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s youth fishing programs.

Determining the 2015 Elite Series field – Bassmaster.com

Determining the 2015 Elite Series field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Invitations were sent to 112 anglers Friday morning confirming their qualification for the 2015 Bassmaster Elite Series. The qualifiers include a mixture of top fishermen from the 2014 Series, rookies, qualifiers from the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens and others who have finished consistently high in their Elite careers.

B.A.S.S. outlined the qualification criteria for the Elite Series in a Participation Agreement signed by each of the Elite anglers last year. It guaranteed only 87 spots — 70 from the 2014 Angler of the Year standings, five each from the three Opens divisions, one B.A.S.S. Nation divisional champion and the 2015 Bassmaster Classic winner, if he has not already qualified through another route. Those last two qualifiers will be determined at championships to be held later.

B.A.S.S. officials reserved the right to determine any remaining qualifiers needed to fill the Elite field.

“We set the target field size at 108, which is where we started last year,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “A survey of the entire Elite Field from last year indicated that the ideal field size is between 100 and 110, so this falls in that range.”

In addition to those 108, B.A.S.S. has extended invitations to five pros who received “hardship exemptions” last year, including 2013 Classic winner Cliff Pace, who was badly injured in a hunting accident. If any of the five decline the opportunity, their slots will not be filled, Akin added. Likewise, if the 2015 Classic champion is already qualified for the Elites, that position will be eliminated.

“With demand for positions in the Elite Series exceeding capacity — and after consulting with Elite Series Advisory Board members as well as others — we have implemented a system of ‘re-qualifying’ for the Elites that we believe is fair, that rewards performance and that gives newcomers to the Series a grace period to become acclimated to this level of competition,” Akin explained in his letter to Elite qualifiers Friday.

To fill the field, B.A.S.S. also invited five rookies who fell below 71st in Angler of the Year points standings at the end of the season. “We decided to give newcomers a two-year ‘grace period’ to become acclimated to this level of competition,” Akin explained.

In addition, remaining Elites not making the cut were ranked according to their average AOY standings during their careers in the Elites, after dropping their lowest finish. That pool produced 16 qualifiers.

If all those invited decide to compete in 2015, however, 14 veterans from the Elite Series will not be able to fish next year. B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon explained the dilemma in a separate letter to those below the cut, which he followed up with phone calls.

“Some on this list most likely will make it in, while others probably will not requalify for the Elite Series this coming season,” Weldon wrote. “It is extremely difficult for us to deny participation to so many outstanding fishermen who have been supportive of B.A.S.S. and the sport of professional bass fishing.”

He said he hoped the pros will seek to return to the Elites by qualifying through the 2015 Bassmaster Opens tournaments.

He added that the anglers overwhelmingly agree the Elite field should be restricted in size, even though that might mean some are eliminated from the competition.

The first round of invitees have until Nov. 11 to sign up. Others have an additional week to decide. The process of filling slots vacated by those who might decline the invitations may mean it will be December before some pros learn whether they’re in or out, Weldon explained.

Abu Garcia REVO Beast Casting Reel Review by: Walker Smith

0

I try to keep my bass fishing equipment as versatile as I possibly can. I’m a big believer that just a small collection of rods and reels can be used for a myriad of techniques. But—there’s always a “but”—there’s one major exception in my opinion. When it comes to flipping and pitching heavy cover, I use the most heavy-duty, aggressive equipment I can find.

With that being said, I was beyond excited to get my hands on the new Abu Garcia REVO Beast Casting Reel. I had heard rumblings about it for a while, so when I was finally introduced to it at Lake El Salto this summer, I was beside myself. I’ve been using it several times each week for the past four months and I am absolutely in-love with it.

Storm Arashi Rattling Square Bill Review by: Walker Smith

With a virtual buffet of shallow forage from which to choose, it’s very common for bass to use shallow cover as ambush points throughout the fall months. Although flipping and pitching this cover is a popular technique, banging into it with a big squarebill is an excellent way to quickly develop a pattern and trigger some nasty reaction strikes.

The shallow bite has been pretty solid in my area for the past several weeks which has given me an opportunity to test the new Storm Arashi Rattling Square Bill quite a bit. After a lot of exciting fish catches and several hundred casts, I believe it’s a very powerful tool for any shallow water bass angler.
