Lewis Smith Lake is a great place to learn and gain confidence in fishing the dropshot rig. I’ve fished a dropshot rig for over 20 years and it helped me win the 2010 Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Lanier.  I’ll teach you everything I know about fishing this highly effective presentation for spotted bass, including catching them vertically beneath the boat while watching your electronics.  I’ll also break down seasonal patterns and the best techniques to catch spotted and largemouth bass on Smith Lake.

Things to bring:

A valid Alabama fishing license, rain gear, sunglasses, hat, sun block, food and drink, and seasonal clothing.
I’ll provide life jackets and all fishing equipment and tackle. I don’t allow smoking on my boat.

Thinkin’ bass when it’s 15 below – By Kevin VanDam

Thinkin’ bass when it’s 15 below

We’ve just experienced the coldest and snowiest week of winter that I’ve seen since I was a teenager. On one hand, it was fun to hang with my teenage boys who were home for three days because school was cancelled. But when school is cancelled in Michigan, you know the weather is bad. How bad?

We got about 30 inches of snow in three days, and it was very difficult to get around. It was -15 degrees outside while I spent 3½ hours on the snow blower and plow. The wind was blowing 25 mph, which pushed the wind chill down to -45 and created massive drifts. Today, as I look at my driveway toward the county road, there’s snow piled 5 feet high.

So why do I live in Michigan? Mainly because our family loves the outdoors and enjoy the four seasons – spring, summer, fall and winter that we experience here.

And, of course, I’d argue we have the best smallmouth bass fishing in the world, and that comes from having diverse lakes, cooler seasons and less fishing pressure.

Some of us fish late into the fall and are back out when the ice thaws in spring, but there’s about four months of open water when there’s very little fishing pressure on the thousands of lakes we have here. So, in that respect, our lakes get a break and I think that helps our fishing.

New Company Bringing World’s Top Pros Into Your Living Room – Jason Christie

Overview: Pro Web Live offers a non-traditional, cutting-edge concept coming soon to living rooms and banquet halls around the world. PWL combines a seminar, TV show, social media platform, and an online retailer into one compact interactive production that is sure to change the way you look at professional outdoor seminars forever…and it’s all live!

The all-star lineup includes Bassfan’s current #1 World Ranked Angler and four-time tour winner Jason Christie, Host of “One More Cast” and nine-time BASS winner Shaw Grigsby, 2006 FWC Champion and eight-time FLW winner Brent Ehrler, 2011 BASS Rookie of the Year and All-Star Event Champion Ott DeFoe, 2009 TTBC World Champion and five-time FLW winner Dave Lefebre, Host of Jimmy Houston Outdoors and Chevy Pro Jimmy Houston, six-time BASS Tour winner and 12-time Classic Qualifier Edwin Evers, 2013 Classic runner-up and two-time BASS tour winner Brandon Palaniuk, 2013 BASS Angler of the Year and six-time BASS tour winner Aaron Martens, and six-time FLW winner and Wal-Mart pro Mark Rose.

Pro Web Live asked fishing fans from across the country a couple of admittedly leading, but telling questions…

Would you rather put gas in your truck, fight downtown traffic all the way to the outdoor expo, pay to park, walk a half mile while being solicited twice, stand in line, buy a ticket, pay for a flat drink and a stale snack, fight the large crowds, sit behind the tall loud guy on a little rock-hard fold up chair in the back of an over-sized room, all to listen to someone you’ve never heard of before talk about how to tie a palomar knot…only to return to your dark home late on a work night, while finally spreading the flu virus to your entire family?

…Or, would you rather come home from work, eat dinner with your family, invite a few friends over, flip open your laptop and enjoy interacting with your favorite fishing pro as he educates you in your own setting?

“Basically, this deal is a win-win for everyone”, says Jason Christie, who finished the 2013 season as the #1 angler in the World. “Like everyone else in the PWL speaker line up, I am a very busy person. I’m traveling all the time, not just to tournaments, but also to various other appearances. What Pro Web Live is doing not only makes perfect sense to the fans, but also assists someone in my situation, and I’m excited about the possibilities of engaging with more of those fishing fans because of it.”

Resolve to Fish Uncomfortable

As we kick off 2014, I’d like to first wish everyone a Happy New Year. I always enjoy this time of year while I finish putting the hunting gear away and begin prepping for the upcoming fishing season. This year I’m fishing both the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Opens and the Bassmaster Elite Series. It’s hard to believe that in less than a month I will be headed to Lake Amistad, Texas, for the first Open event. From there it’s off to the Geico Bassmaster Classic on Lake Guntersville.

As we turn the page on 2013, I was thinking of all the things that have helped me become the angler I am today. I wanted to share one tip I got from my dad well before I began fishing for a living. A tip that seemed small back then has been a large factor in shaping the fisherman I am today.

Back when I was fishing the same three or four lakes consistently, both in tournaments and for fun, my dad gave me this tip. He told me to fish a new area every time I go fishing. This sounds simple, but leaving something you know for something that might not pan out is an uncomfortable feeling in life and fishing.

I had been fishing these lakes for years, and I had plenty of areas that I knew and felt comfortable fishing. On each trip, instead of just going to these same old areas, I ventured out and fished at least one new spot even if I didn’t think it would produce.
