Palaniuk’s Lead Widens In Bassmaster Angler Of The Year Race

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Brandon Palaniuk of Rathdrum, Idaho, knows he’s leading the race for the Progressive Bassmaster Angler of the Year title. He insists that he doesn’t know by how much. His mindset is simply, “I’ve got a one-point lead — one point.”

In reality, despite turning in his second-worst event of the season, Palaniuk’s lead over second place grew from 18 points to 41 after the Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River. When your worst performance is 26th at Florida’s Harris Chain and your second-worst is 25th at the St. Lawrence, clearly you’re having a remarkable season.

However, 25th place marked Palaniuk’s worst finish at the St. Lawrence, where he won in 2013 and has amassed four other Top 10s.

“It’s all about perspective,” he said. “I finished 26th at Florida, and I was ecstatic about it. I finished 25th at the St. Lawrence, and I feel like I got gut punched. But that’s because of the expectations I set for myself.”

After seven tournaments in the nine-tournament 2022 season, David Mullins of Mt. Carmel, Tenn., has moved into second place and shaved a few points off his deficit with a 16th-place finish at St. Lawrence. John Cox of DeBary, Fla., stumbled in New York, dropping to third place in the AOY standings after missing the Top 47 cut for the first time this season. Brandon Lester of Fayetteville, Tenn., and Drew Benton of Blakely, Ga., round out the Top 5.

The drama is more intense at the Bassmaster Classic cutline. Currently, four Elite Series pros are double qualifiers for the 2023 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk, including three winners from the St. Croix Bassmaster Opens Series presented by Mossy Oak Fishing: Lester, fourth in AOY and winner of the Kissimmee Chain Southern Open; Japan’s Kenta Kimura, 14th in AOY and the James River Northern Open winner; Oklahoma pro Jason Christie, 21st in AOY and reigning Bassmaster Classic champion; and Texas angler Lee Livesay, 38th in AOY and the Ross Barnett Central Open winner.

With those double qualifiers, the list of Elite Series qualifiers for the 2023 Classic, which starts with the Top 39 in the final 2022 AOY standings, now extends to the Top 43. That could change if Livesay drops below 42nd in the final standings. But no matter what happens with Livesay, there are a dozen anglers separated by only 30 points around that qualifying number — from 37th-place Carl Jocumsen of Australia with 411 points to 48th-place Bill Lowen of Indiana with 381 points.

That also doesn’t preclude anglers above or below those rankings from making dramatic rises or falls in the last two tournaments of the year. Even this late in the season there are significant movements in the AOY standings after every event. Wisconsin rookie Jay Przekurat made a big move after his win at St. Lawrence, jumping from 36th to 20th in the AOY standings. Fellow Elite Series rookie Joseph Webster of Alabama experienced the other side of the coin, dropping from 29th to 47th after his 88th-place finish at St. Lawrence.

The Elite Series field takes to the water again August 18-21 at the Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite at Lake Oahe in South Dakota.

Indiana’s Wilkinson Wins Phoenix Bass Fishing League Event on the Ohio River

Boater Chris Wilkinson of Farmersburg, Indiana, and Strike-King co-angler Joshua Guthrie of Athens, Ohio.
Ohio’s Guthrie Tops Strike King Co-Angler Division

MAYSVILLE, Ky. (July 25, 2022) – Boater Chris Wilkinson of Farmersburg, Indiana, caught five bass Saturday weighing 8 pounds, 2 ounces, to win the MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by T-H Marine on the Ohio River. The tournament was the third event for the Bass Fishing League Buckeye Division. Wilkinson earned $4,199 for his victory.

Wilkinson, who notched his eighth career BFL victory – with his last coming last month on the Ohio River out of Tanners Creek – said this event was only his third time to ever fish the Ohio River.

“I had heard the (Maysville) pool could fish really tough,” Wilkinson said. “And it sounds a little crazy, but I like it when the fishing is tough like that.

“I started out in the back of a creek and caught two keepers and then moved out toward the mouth of the creek and caught one more,” Wilkinson added. “I fished the whole tournament in creeks, with the exception of my last fish, which I caught in the main river.”

Wilkinson said he caught almost all of his fish on a Texas-rigged, gill-colored Hog Snatcher Baits tube. Wilkinson targeted bass holding on wood in less than a foot of water.

“I caught 10 keepers during the day,” Wilkinson said. “I didn’t really upgrade a whole lot. I was due in at 2:20, and at 2:16 I culled my last fish. That was definitely the one that gave me enough to win.

“I’ve seen six pounds win there, and I’ve seen seven pounds win there, and I had right at eight pounds, but yeah, it surprised me I won,” Wilkinson added.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:        Chris Wilkinson, Farmersburg, Ind., five bass, 8-2, $4,199
2nd:       Jake Poffenberger, Brookville, Ohio, five bass, 7-15, $2,600 (includes $500 Phoenix MLF Contingency Bonus)
3rd:       Pete Justice, Sharonville, Ohio, three bass, 7-6, $2183
4th:        Dick Shaffer, Rockford, Ohio, four bass, 7-4, $910
4th:        Chuck Willis, Dayton, Ohio, five bass, 7-4, $910
6th:        Chris Martinkovic, Hamilton, Ohio, five bass, 7-3, $1,470
7th:        Dave Fricke, Hamilton, Ohio, five bass, 6-14, $700
8th:        Jamie Cunnagin, New Lebanon, Ohio, three bass, 5-15, $630
9th:        Brody Campbell, Oxford, Ohio, four bass, 5-14, $560
10th:     David Spivey, Hamilton, Ohio, four bass, 5-11, $490

Complete results can be found at MajorLeagueFishing.com.

Justice caught the heaviest bass of the event in the Boater Division, weighing 4 pounds, 3 ounces,to earn the day’s Berkley Big Bass award of $585.

Joshua Guthrie of Athens, Ohio, won the Strike King Co-angler Division and $2,100 Saturday after catching four bass weighing 5 pounds, 11 ounces.

The top 10 Strike King co-anglers were:

1st:        Joshua Guthrie, Athens, Ohio, four bass, 5-11, $2,100
2nd:       Matt Fisher, Glouster, Ohio, three bass, 5-5, $1,700
3rd:       Jesse Foster, Franklin, Ohio, two bass, 4-12, $701
4th:        Matt Luken, Independence, Ky., four bass, 4-8, $490
5th:        Ed Mook, Sewickley, Pa., three bass, 4-2, $402
5th:        Cole Lorenz, Canal Winchester, Ohio, two bass, 4-2, $402
7th:        Rick McGuire, Brookville, Ohio, two bass, 3-14, $350
8th:        Jeff Turner, Plainfield, Ill., two bass, 3-13, $315
9th:        Ryan Sykes, Fairfield, Ohio, two bass, 3-12, $280
10th:     Josh Whitehead, Kent, Ohio, one bass, 3-10, $537

Whitehead caught the largest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 3 pounds, 10 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Berkley Big Bass Co-angler award of $292.

After three events, Dave Fricke of Hamilton, Ohio, leads the Bass Fishing League Buckeye Division Boater Angler of the Year (AOY) race with 730 points, while Jacob Alltop of Lewistown, Ohio, leads the Strike King Co-Angler Division AOY race with 711 points.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 20-22 Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on the James River in Richmond, Virginia. Boaters will compete for a top award of $60,000, including a new Phoenix 819 Pro with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard and $10,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Phoenix 819 Pro with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard.

The 2022 Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by T-H Marine is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and Strike King co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six Regional Championships where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Phoenix Bass Fishing League All-American.

The top 45 boaters and Strike King co-anglers plus tournament winners from each Phoenix Bass Fishing League division will also earn priority entry into the MLF Toyota Series, the pathway to the MLF Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit and ultimately the MLF Bass Pro Tour.

Proud sponsors of the 2022 MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League Presented by T-H Marine include: 4WP, 13 Fishing, Abu Garcia, AFTCO, A.R.E. Troy Wines Wins The Bass Cast Kayak Bass Series on the Maury/James River with 82.50″

Maury/James River Recap by Danielle Englund

It was a hot one out there on Saturday, July 23, but 16 anglers braved the heat to fish our tournament on the Maury and James River. We have been looking forward to this tournament all season, as it was our opportunity to have an event that ended at Journey Outdoors, our title sponsor. The morning went well for many of our anglers, and more than half of the submitted fish were caught by 10:30 AM. Once it heated up, the bite slow down, and some of our anglers struggled to get the big ones on the line. We had a very competitive group, and we’re excited that a couple of new folks joined us as well.

At our tournament HQ, Journey Outdoors, owners Bryan and Christina Volpe had provided barbecue, chicken salad, and all the fixings from Beam Me Up Barbecue. The food was delicious, and outshined only by our opportunity to spend time with some of our favorite people, who also happen to fish our tournament series.

The totals were close, with places 2 through 5 only having a total of 5” separating them. However, our winner, Troy Wines, blew the field away with 82.50”. He tied for big fish with our second place winner, Justin Largen, as they both had an 18.50” fish. Justin‘s total length was 73”, and third place went to Adam Flint, with 72.25”.

Our next tournament will be on the Shenandoah River on August 6. Registration will be available soon. As always, we think our sponsors, especially Journey Outdoors, and all of the anglers and their families who came out to join us on this fun, but hot Saturday.

The Ever Green XV-5 is a Stealthy Shad Profiled Jerkbait Crossover

Date: 7/20/22
Tackle Type: Lures
Manufacturer: Ever Green / Daiwa
Reviewer: Zander

Introduction: Ever Green continues to design some of the most refined JDM style baits and this season the company is introducing the XV-5, a shad profiled jerkbait crossover that is specifically designed for targeting shy fish in both crystal clear and highly pressured waters.

Ever Green’s newest crankbait is a crossover between a shad crankbait and a jerkbait. Meet the XV-5

Crossover Design: Shad profiled lures are popular in Japan and the United States as they not only match the resident forage in a lot of waterways but are also effective at targeting many different species including bass, stripers, walleyes, and so much more. The XV-5 origins come from highly pressured Japanese waters where anglers are constantly having to be creative to coax bites from fish that have seen it all

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Dakota Lithium, a U.S. battery manufacturer founded in 2008, has signed a three-year partnership with B.A.S.S. as a premier sponsor of the Bassmaster Tournament Trail and the Official Lithium Battery of Bassmaster through 2025.

“Here at Dakota Lithium, we are proud to be partnering with Bassmaster as the first Official Lithium Battery. Dakota Lithium is the top battery choice of professional anglers. Partnering with the leading professional fishing tournament series just made sense. We are looking forward to joining the elite brands that are supporting the future of fishing,” said Dakota Lithium CEO Andrew A. Jay.

Dakota Lithium already works with multiple current Bassmaster Elite Series pro anglers. Two-time Bassmaster Classic champion Hank Cherry, Greg DiPalma, Austin Felix, Marc Frazier, Brock Mosley, Chad Pipkens, Tyler Rivet, Matt Robertson and Kyle Welcher are all part of the Dakota Lithium pro staff.

“I was the first Bassmaster Elite angler to use Dakota Lithium batteries and have been on the team from the beginning,” said Mosley, who has notched five Top 10 Elite finishes in the past two seasons. “It is truly amazing to see how far they have come and to see them sponsor the 2023 Bassmaster season.”

Fellow Elite pro Matt Robertson echoed that enthusiasm for the partnership.

“When you combine the best lithium battery and the best fishing organization, you get Dakota Lithium and Bassmaster,” said Robertson, who has claimed two Top 10s this season. “Like Bassmaster, Dakota Lithium is the highest quality, longest lasting battery on the market. Nothing makes more sense than Dakota Lithium becoming the first Official Lithium Battery of Bassmaster.”

Dakota Lithium will be a premier sponsor for the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk, Bassmaster Elite Series, St. Croix Bassmaster Opens Series presented by Mossy Oak Fishing, Strike King Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops, Abu Garcia Bassmaster High School Series presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors, Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Team Championship and the grass-roots TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation regional and championship tournaments.

In addition to their tournament sponsorship, Dakota Lithium will be highlighted during Bassmaster LIVE, which is streamed on Bassmaster.com and broadcast Saturday and Sunday mornings on the FOX Sports platforms, and will enjoy exposure in Bassmaster and B.A.S.S. Times magazines and across various industry-leading social media platforms.

Lithium batteries have become an industry standard for competitive fishing, providing twice the usable power at half the weight of traditional batteries. In a quickly growing market, Dakota Lithium has become the brand of choice for professional athletes, primarily due to Dakota Lithium’s performance, reliability, lifespan and best-in-class 11-year warranty.

“This new partnership with Bassmaster and Dakota Lithium shows how Dakota Lithium has become the go-to battery in the marine industry, and partnering with Bassmaster is the next step in continuing that dominance,” said Craig Storms, Dakota Lithium national sales representative and pro staff manager.

“We are proud to welcome Dakota Lithium as a new premier partner and look forward to connecting them with anglers and Bassmaster fans,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Chase Anderson. “Dakota Lithium already works alongside so many anglers at all levels, and we are excited to introduce their long-lasting batteries to our passionate fans over the next several years.”

Major League Fishing Unveils General Tire Team Series Draft Results

Three-Man Teams Set to Compete for $300,000 Top Prize This Fall, Episodes Premiere in January on Outdoor Channel

ORLANDO, Fla. (July 21, 2022) – Major League Fishing (MLF), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, announced today the results of the inaugural General Tire Team Series Draft at a live press event at the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST).

The General Tire Team Series will succeed the current MLF Cup events – following 11 highly successful seasons on the Outdoor Channel – and will showcase the 80 anglers that compete on the Bass Pro Tour, joined by the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit TITLE champion, competing as three-man teams across four events for hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash payouts.

The inaugural Team Series Draft took place on June 1, in Spring City, Tennessee, where the top 27 Bass Pro Tour anglers – based on 2021 Angler of the Year (AOY) point standings – selected two additional Bass Pro Tour anglers to create 27 three-man teams that will compete over the three qualifying events.

Team members will be in constant communication with their teammates during competition, via wireless earpieces, allowing them to work together to develop real-time strategies and adapt on the water to create an exciting new format never before seen on television.

Each qualifying event will feature nine teams, divided into three groups. Each group competition will feature three teams competing over two days to accumulate the highest total two-day weight. The group winners – three teams from each qualifying event – will advance to the General Tire Team Series Championship, which will showcase the nine winning teams competing for a top prize of $300,000.

“We’re incredibly excited to launch the General Tire Team Series following our extremely successful pilot episode that aired earlier this year, and reveal the team selections from the inaugural draft,” said Jim Wilburn, MLF President & CEO. “We’re confident that the unique partnerships throughout the field will result in some extraordinary matchups and create some exhilarating television for our anglers and fans alike.”

Following traditional MLF Cup event protocols, Team Series anglers will not be told the host destination until two weeks prior to each event and will only discover which fishery they are competing on after arriving at the boat ramp the morning of competition.

MLF announced filming dates for the 2022 Team Series in an earlier release, however the events will be shot in the dark, with the location of the fisheries kept private until the episodes premiere in January 2023 on the Outdoor Channel.
