Stage Set For 2021 Big Bass Zone Junior Championship World Finals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — After eight months of online competition, 54 young anglers from across the country will converge on Missouri’s Lake Taneycomo Oct. 30 for the world finals of the BassCat Boats Big Bass Zone Junior Championship presented by B.A.S.S.

The anglers qualified for the world finals via the online Big Bass Zone Junior Championship, which allowed young competitors to fish from anywhere and on their own schedule. Anglers submitted their fish catches to a virtual leaderboard for each state through the Fishing Chaos app. The angler with the heaviest five-bass limit from that state moved on to the 2021 BBZ Junior Championship world finals. The world finals will be a one-fish tournament.

Among the impressive field of finalists are some of the country’s best high school anglers, including 11 students who competed in July’s Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors and seven anglers who were named to the 2021 Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Team presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Carter Doren captured the 2020 BBZ Junior Championship title with a 4.35-pound largemouth. It was one of four tournaments Doren won during his 2020 season. Doren was part of the prestigious 2021 Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team and along with his partner Ryan Lachniet, who is also a BBZ Junior Championship finalist, notched an impressive Top 5 finish at the High School National Championship.

The 2021 champion will take home an astonishing prize package that includes a fully loaded 2021 BassCat Margay powered by a Mercury Pro XS outboard and outfitted by MotorGuide, Lowrance and Power-Pole. Other prizes up for grabs in the tournament include four trips to Lake El Salto, Mexico, provided by Anglers Inn International, scholarships from Bethel University and a host of gear from AFTCO.

2021 Bassmaster College Classic Bracket Features New Format

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — When eight of the country’s best college anglers launch on the Coosa River from Wetumpka, Ala., Oct. 1-4 during the Carhartt Bassmaster College Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops they will be fishing a new tournament format while competing for a berth in the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk.

New for this year, on Day 1 of the event, all eight anglers will compete individually to determine seeding and set the bracket for head-to-head competition. Morning action on Day 2, the first elimination day in the tournament, will be broadcast on FS1 beginning at 7 a.m. CT.

For the first time, the 2021 Bassmaster College Team of the Year — Auburn University’s Logan Parks and Tucker Smith — automatically punched their ticket to the College Classic Bracket to compete alongside the Top 3 teams from the Bassmaster College National Championship in this individual, elimination-style tournament. Joining Parks and Smith will be National Champions Hayden Scott and Griffin Fernandes from Michigan’s Adrian College, Tristan McCormick and Stevie Mills from bass fishing powerhouse Bethel University and a second team from Auburn, Conner Crosby and James Cobbs.

Anglers will be battling it out below Jordan Dam, where the Coosa River converges with the Tallapoosa and Alabama rivers.

“Having grown up in Wetumpka and fished this river numerous times throughout my life, I am excited to see what it will produce,” said B.A.S.S. College Series Senior Manager Hank Weldon. “This is often hailed as the best stretch of the Coosa River, and we can’t wait to highlight both the fishery and the country’s best collegiate anglers to a national audience.”

Current will play a big role as anglers look for answers on one of the top spotted bass fisheries in the Southeastern United States. Current breaks on the main river often hold spotted bass in the 4- to 5-pound range, and areas where fresh water is flowing into the fishery sometimes offer the chance to fill a limit quickly without lifting the trolling motor.

It might require weeding through hybrid bass and stripers, but a five-bass limit of spotted bass weighing 18 to 20 pounds isn’t out of the question in the wild river environment.

“We welcome the opportunity to partner with and host the Bassmaster College Classic Bracket,” said Wetumpka Mayor Jerry Willis. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase our area. The Coosa River has always been known as a hotspot for bass fishing and we are excited to once again be able to participate in an event such as this.”

The most recent major Bassmaster event out of Wetumpka was a two-day Elite All-Star Semifinal tournament on Lake Jordan in 2011.

The City of Wetumpka is hosting the tournament.

Bass Pro Tour Anglers Will Participate in Smallmouth Study at CarParts.com Stage Seven at Lake St. Clair Presented by Covercraft

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (Sept. 7, 2021) – At the upcoming CarParts.com Stage Seven at Lake St. Clair Presented by Covercraft that starts Friday on Michigan’s Lake St. Clair, anglers competing on Day 1 and Day 2 will once again have the option to use their livewells.

The last time you saw a livewell option on the Bass Pro Tour was at Lake Fork in 2020, where anglers had the opportunity to preserve ShareLunker largemouth – fish 13 pounds or larger – in their livewells to hand off to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Division for spawning purposes. This time around, it will be to help advance research into Largemouth Bass Virus (Ranavirus) and its clinical signs in smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu).

The anglers are assisting Dr. Thomas Loch’s research team at Michigan State University’s Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory and Tom Wills at Michigan DNR, both of whom are currently researching if external skin lesions on smallmouth bass are linked to Largemouth Bass Virus (LMBV).

The Science of LMBV
Much of what we know about LMBV comes from the southern U.S., where the virus can result in the mortality of largemouth (Micropterus salmoides). It was first isolated from fish in Lake Weir in 1991 and has been considered the cause of dozens of fish kills in the late 90s and early 2000s. In largemouth, the virus causes lethargy, bleeding, enlarged organs, swim bladder lesions and death in adult-sized fish.

Recent research has shown the virus infecting smallmouth in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and several rivers in Pennsylvania. Dr. Loch’s lab has also been able to infect smallmouth with LMBV in the lab, demonstrating that external skin lesions appear on these infected fish. Dr. Loch’s team is drawing closer to finding a correlation between LMBV, external skin lesions, temperature and smallmouth bass kills that have occurred in the Susquehanna, Juniata, and Alleghany Rivers since 2005.

Collecting smallmouth that have skin lesions in St. Clair is part of the ongoing look into the prevalence and clinical signs of LMBV in the Great Lakes system.

Our anglers will report to the MLF Fisheries Management Division (FMD) during practice the number of smallmouth they catch that exhibit a skin lesion. Once competition starts, FMD will continue to tally the occurrences of skin lesions as part of the data we collect from every fish caught during the event. On Days 1 and 2, anglers will also be allowed to place any fish with a skin lesion into their livewells for donation to Dr. Loch’s lab for further analysis.

These fish will be transported back to the Michigan State Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory for observation, skin lesion biopsy, and virus isolation. We will also provide catch data – including GPS location – for each donated fish to calculate any correlations between location and LMBV prevalence.

Because these anglers may consequently have carried LMBV-positive fish in their livewells, FMD will implement a cleaning procedure for any angler that donates a fish. This will include using a disinfectant in the livewell and recirculation pumps for 15 minutes, then flushing the system and drying the livewells out on their off day.

The Fisheries Management Division – as well as the roster of Bass Pro Tour anglers – is excited to be part of this research project as well as helping to further this research in coming seasons.

Kerr Lake September 2021 Fishing Report by Dennie Gilbert

Dennie Gilbert
Kerr lake

September is a prime month to start searching for schoolers Topwaters of all types, swim baits, flukes and jerkbaits will all work. Either sitting on known schooling holes or riding and looking. When located get the bait in the water quick because they don’t usually stay up for long periods of time.  Another pattern to look for is fishing brush you can throw most anything if they’re there it’ll work.  It’s time for fish to start moving to back of some creeks. This is also the time they’ll suspend which will make the fishing tough
Good luck and good fishing.

Pamlico Sound/Albermarle Sound September Fishing Report by Capt. Scooter Lilley

Capt. Scooter Lilley
Pamlico Sound/Albermarle Sound
Largemouth Bass update:
The Roanoke river is still pumping out some heavy weights in the weekend tournaments. The fish are starting to transition to their fall time feeding patterns transitioning to the creeks and fallowing bait. Top waters are still working well, crank baits and flipping creature baits seem to be the best for success! I’ve been spending most of the month chasing bull reds on the Pamlico sound with popping corks. Using DOA lures , Zman swimbaits and gulp underneath the cork. The bite has been stingy last couple of days but we have boated some trophy fish. The cut bait fisherman have been doing well into the late afternoon and nighttime hours. If your interested in a fish of a lifetime give us a call for your chance at a 50 lb. Bull Red!

Hamann’s Big Bag Lifts Him To B.A.S.S. Nation Northern Regional Victory On Mississippi River

[print_link]

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Iowa’s Adam Hamann played it safe the first two days of the 2021 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Northern Regional on the Upper Mississippi River, leaving his primary area after filling his limit and saving the fish he thought were still there for later.

On Championship Friday, the Prairie Du Chien native proved he had saved the best for last, landing an 18-pound, 7-ounce bag to claim the victory with a three-day total of 47-6, earning a $5,000 check from Ranger and a berth in the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship scheduled for Nov. 3-5 on the Ouachita River in Monroe, La.

“I’d like to say I think it is because I saved some fish,” Hamann said. “The first two days I really saved them and I cracked on them today. We stayed in our starting spot for a long time today.

“Me and my co-angler let 15 fish over 3 pounds go today. It was a magical day. With the overcast sky and the water getting cleaner every day, it just kept getting better and better.”

Hamann is a Mississippi River native and mostly fishes Pool 10 around his hometown, but does not have as much experience in the La Crosse section of the river. Even still, he was worried that his knowledge of the river would hurt him more than it would help.

“I’m a Mississippi River guy through and through,” Hamann said. “It’s huge. I talked about it all year with my buddies, the local curse is usually a thing. That kind of scared me the whole time. Trying to compete on your home water can really hurt you a lot. It didn’t this time and it worked out in my favor.”

With 13-12 on Day 1, Hamann landed in eighth before jumping to third on the second day with 15-3. After two days of sunny, mild conditions, a cold front brought clouds, rain and wind to the area on Friday, which ended up helping Hamann’s bite.

“They were just cruising on a flat and they never came off the flat because of the colder weather,” he said. “They stayed up there and were feeding all day and there was no reason for them to go back to deeper water.”

Throughout the week, Hamann said he made the longest run of anyone in the field and targeted a fall migration area that he believed other anglers wouldn’t find. Using Humminbird 360 technology, he located submerged weed beds as well as longer points.

“I focused on stuff I knew other anglers wouldn’t get. Stuff you can’t see without Humminbird 360,” he said. “Today we had all solid fish. We didn’t have one fish over 4 pounds. As the year goes on, they will get bigger.”

Hamann caught both smallmouth and largemouth during the first two days of the event. But on Friday, he weighed all largemouth. As the water cleared up in his area, the bite improved.

A ChatterBait did the majority of the damage on the final day, but Hamann had as many as 16 rods on his deck each day of the tournament and believes he caught a bass on each rod throughout the week.

After leading the first two days of the tournament, Minnesota native Richard Lindgren fell to second place with a three-day total of 42-3. He landed just three fish for 10-2 on the final day.

Originally an alternate for the Minnesota team, Lindgren said he is happy to be making his third trip to the Nation Championship.

“I got my stuff together in 24 hours’ notice and made it down here. Put in three superlong days of practice and I wasn’t on a lot, but I saw just enough,” the Lakeville, Minn., native said. “The Minnesota team works together and the clues I got in the meeting along with what I saw in practice, I was able to unlock it in the tournament.”

Throughout the week, Lindgren had caught both smallmouth and largemouth, starting each day on some backwater sand drops and current-oriented structure with topwater lures. From there he rotated to a closing dam that produced several smallmouth bites on a Carolina rig before frogging for largemouth.

On the final day, Lindgren’s only bites — all of which were largemouth — came from one grass mat that he circled for over an hour.

“The first two days I weighed three largemouth and two smallmouth,” he said. “Today I had three largemouth and no smallmouth. The clouds and the rain shut down my smallmouth bite. I couldn’t get them to go.

“I just didn’t have enough largemouth spots to get five largemouth. I just needed two more bites. I was on the quality. I was one mat away from not catching a fish today.”

Wisconsin angler Jim Barczak finished third with 41-0, catching 14-2 on Day 1 and 13-8 on Day 2. Using mostly a topwater walking bait, Barczak targeted smallmouth that were setup on current seams, wing dams and hard edges.

“The fishing for this tournament was pretty tough for me, but I grinded it out and had backup after backup,” Barczak said. “Thankfully I got five fish in the boat every day. I found some good largemouth during pre-fishing and tried to find them again for four hours the first day and three hours the second day, but I never did connect. So, after that, I went smallie fishing and made the best of it.”

Hamann’s magical day also lifted his nonboater Chizta Xiong to the nonboater title. With a three-bass limit weighing 9-10, the Minnesota angler increased his three-day total to 22-13.

Being in the back of the boat, Xiong expected this tournament to be particularly tough for him. After landing just over 4 pounds on Day 1, he rebounded with 8-13 on Day 2 to put himself back in contention before his epic day with Hamann on Championship Friday.

“This is the best bag I’ve ever caught down here. Just the amount of fish we culled, I’m super excited,” Xiong said. “There were moments where we were doubled-up with 3 pounders and were just laughing because we didn’t even need them.”

Nebraska’s Brock Belik landed a 4-10 bass on the final day to earn the Big Bass of the Tournament award, earning $500. Fellow Nebraska angler Leray Anderson II won $250 for the same title on the nonboater side with a 4-11. Both anglers compete for the South Dakota team.

The top boater and nonboater from each state qualified for the Nation Championship to compete for one of three berths into the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk.

Bassmaster Pros Helping With Hurricane Relief

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — After Hurricane Ida devastated areas across south Louisiana and Mississippi, Bassmaster Elite Series pros are helping to raise funds for hurricane relief as well as lending a helping hand to a fellow angler and impacted communities.

Immediately after the hurricane hit, reigning Bassmaster Classic champion Hank Cherry of Lincolnton, N.C., teamed up with his title sponsor, Woods to Water Outdoor Co., to formulate a plan to get down to Louisiana and help those in need. Local sporting goods store The Great Outdoors in Cherryville, N.C., was able to lend Cherry a massive trailer to load up goods to haul down to the Bayou State.

“I just felt like I needed to do something,” Cherry said. “I want to use my platform to help those in need right now.”

The response that Cherry and company received after posting about their efforts on social media was incredible. The local community donated an overwhelming number of supplies to send with the North Carolinian — which include water, food, tarps, charcoal, roofing equipment, diapers, paper towels and countless other necessities. Cherry has also created a GoFundMe relief account for the communities that were affected.

Initially, the goal was to reach $5,000. That number was reached within the first day. The plan is to keep the account open to donations and wait to use the funds until they know exactly what is needed most.

“Our area is so great,” he said. “We’ve had people all across the board reach out to help, which has been really cool to see. It may end up that we need two trailers to haul everything by the time we leave.

“The people down there have been devastated by this storm,” he continued. “We’re just trying to do as much as we can to help. Really, it’s just the right thing to do.”

Cherry is heading toward the Gulf Coast to meet up with fellow Elite Series pro Brock Mosley, of Collinsville, Miss., who is currently assisting their Elite Series roommate Tyler Rivet and his family in Raceland, La. Raceland, in Lafourche Parish, was one of the areas hit the hardest as Category 4 Ida moved across the area on Sunday.

“It’s not just about Tyler,” Mosley said. “It’s his entire family. We consider his family our family.

“I was in touch with Tyler the entire day when the hurricane landed. I got a hold of him while I was at Lowe’s and got them a load of supplies and let them know I would bring them as soon as I could.”

Other Elite pros are also joining in the fight to help rebuild Louisiana. Derek Hudnall of Denham Springs, La., and Caleb Sumrall of New Iberia, La., have both provided hands-on aid to both neighbors and those in need. Georgia pro Marc Frazier has set up a fundraising link through his Facebook page to buy tarps, water and supplies for Thibodaux, La., his wife’s hometown and the home of Nicholls State University, where he played college baseball.

“Hurricane Ida just demolished this town and the surrounding areas,” Frazier posted on social media. “Luckily our family and friends are okay, but people suffered lots of damage. Thibodaux is a great town and it will be a long road to recovery.”

Local officials have warned residents of the hardest-hit areas that it may be weeks before power is restored.
