Briarwood Christian Team Takes Lead At Bassmaster High School National Championship

PARIS, Tenn. — After dominating the last two Bassmaster High School National Championships, Briarwood Christian’s Tucker Smith is in position to claim his third straight title.

Smith and his partner Hayden Marbut brought 22 pounds, 2 ounces to the stage to take the Day 1 lead at the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship at Kentucky Lake presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

While Smith and Marbut’s bag included four quality smallmouth bass, their kicker was a 7-5 largemouth that currently holds the lead for big bass of the tournament.

“Practice was pretty tough. We weren’t getting that many bites a day,” Marbut said. “The bites we were getting were pretty decent fish, though, and it showed today.

“We really didn’t think we had that much. We didn’t really look at them, we just threw them in the box and kept fishing.”

While he has become familiar with the lake during his last two championships, Smith said he and Marbut are fishing completely differently during this National Championship than he and his former partner Grayson Morris did during the two previous events.

“The last two years it has been in August,” Smith said. “So, to catch them in October, it would be cool to see us do well. We are doing stuff totally different.”

Smith and Marbut took advantage of their early flight on Day 1 and caught every fish they weighed in by 8:30 a.m.

“We ran around some spots we found in practice and it was really slow,” Smith said. “We had one that was about 2 1/2 to 3 pounds that we were trying to cull all day. We caught a few more keepers, but those were the ones we caught in the morning.”

Despite a later boat draw tomorrow, Smith said as long as he and Marbut reach their first spot around 8 a.m., they should be able to have the same success.

Flint Davis and James Henemyre from Lee County High School trail the Briarwood Christian duo by a little less than 5 pounds after catching 17-3. The Georgia anglers made a 30-mile run from Paris Landing and said they had to work hard for their five bites.

“Overall it was really tough,” Davis said. “It’s just one of those lakes you gotta keep your head in it all day and grind to find five bites, and that’s what we did. This lake is inconsistent, so consistency is what is going to win.”

After catching two keepers all of practice, Davis and Henemyre caught two quick keepers on their first stop of the day but did not find a limit until 30 minutes before weigh-in, when they landed a 4 1/2-pounder.

The Lawrence County duo of Hunter Brewer and Kade Suratt are in third place after Day 1 with 16-5. While Suratt said they had a terrible practice overall, Brewer caught one 9-pound fish during warm-ups that changed their outlook on the tournament.

“We didn’t catch a single bass the first day of practice, and we tried something a little different (the next day) and caught that 9-pounder and another 3 1/2-pounder,” Brewer said. “We completely ditched what we did the day before and tried something we do all the time where I’m from.”

Suratt said they spent most of the day throwing jigs into the current.

“This morning we made a long run, and when we got up there it didn’t take long to get the bites we had,” Brewer added. “We got our five bites and just let off and tried some other stuff and eased our way back.”

The full field will take off from Paris Landing again Friday at 7 a.m. CT. Weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. The Top 12 teams after Day 2 will advance to Championship Saturday.

Bethel University is hosting the tournament in conjunction with the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and Henry County Tourism Authority.

Gleason Takes Slim Lead At Bassmaster Central Open On Neely Henry

GADSDEN, Ala. — Playing the fall game the way it needed to be played allowed Darold Gleason of Many, La., to take the Day 1 lead of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open at Neely Henry Lake with 13 pounds, 12 ounces.

Gleason, who finished fifth at the Central Open on Sam Rayburn Reservoir, holds a 2-ounce lead over second-place Derek Hicks.

A mostly warm fall has the fish slowly transitioning into traditional autumn trends, and that means they’re scattered and difficult to pattern. Gleason was understandably slim on details but said he found his fish by remaining mobile and showing them a mix of aggressive and subtle looks.

“I had 12 rods out; I have a moving-baits side and I have a ‘beg-em’ side — dragging baits, spinning rods, shaky heads, little jigs, that kind of stuff,” Gleason said. “I just alternated between beg-em and moving, beg-em and moving.

“I alternated between the two, kept my foot on the trolling motor and just tried to run into as many as I could. I covered 20 miles on Neely Henry and caught my fish in an area of 3 to 4 miles.”

Gleason said that, given his event preview, a strong opening effort was unexpected.

“Practice was horrible, so I did not expect this,” he said. “Today was, by far, the best day I’ve had since I’ve been here.”

Pointing out that he got only six keeper bites Thursday, Gleason said he had to fish a mixture of habitat to amass his leading limit.

“It was a little of this, a little of that,” he said. “This, to me, is a classic junk-fishing derby and, typically, that is not a strong point for me. I’m working diligently to get better at it, and I’m learning on the fly.”

Gleason said the key to his strong performance was mental clarity.

“The biggest thing — and it’s taken me years to get this through my thick skull — is that when you have a bad practice, the first day of the tournament you just keep a fresh mind and don’t be afraid to kinda halfway practice,” he said. “So, I went and fished areas where I thought I could get some bites, and when I didn’t, I kept going, kept going, kept going.”

That persistence was tested when Gleason completed the first several hours of the day with an empty livewell.

“You go three or four hours without a bite and it’s easy to get down and worried, so I would say my (positive) attitude was the biggest thing that worked for me today,” he said. “I was paranoid, freaking out, wondering if I was ever going to catch one.

“It was just one of those dream days on a tough fishery and to have it come together was special.”

Hailing from Rocky Face, Ga., Hicks earned his limit of 13-10 by mixing up his presentations with a 5/8-ounce jig with a Zoom Super Chunk trailer, a shaky head with a Zoom Trick Worm and a ChatterBait with a Zoom Swimming Fluke Jr. trailer.

“I’m fishing everything that comes in front of me,” Hicks said. “I caught them all throughout the day, and I knew I had a decent bag when I threw back a 2 1/2-pounder (late in the day).

“I went as far north as a bass boat can float and fished all the way from Gadsden north. I’m going to do the same thing tomorrow.”

Cody Bird of Granbury, Texas, is in third place with 13-1. Noting that his day comprised a mix of techniques that yielded 10 keeper bites, Bird anchored his sack with a 4-pounder around 11 a.m.

Fishing a variety of wood habitat, Bird said he missed a big bite early. He returned late morning and caught a 4-pounder on the same spot.

“I caught my biggest one in practice there,” Bird said. “I think it’s a current-related deal that’s replenishing.”

Chancy Walters of West Des Moines, Iowa, is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 5-4.

Kayden Tanner of Millsap, Texas, leads the co-angler division with 7-10. Targeting main-river channel banks, Tanner caught all of his fish on a 3/16-ounce shaky head with a Daiwa Yamamoto Neko Worm.

“Banks with hardwood were a big deal,” Tanner said. “Some of the bigger stumps were what they were keying on. I caught a limit for about 6 pounds in the first hour and then at the end of the day I culled up with a largemouth that was close to 3.”

Jason Henson of Rome, Ga., holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 4-0.

Logan Latuso of Gonzales, La., leads the Central Open points race with 561 points, followed by Bassmaster Elite Series pro Lee Livesay with 552. Gleason is in third with 549, Greg Hackney is fourth with 541 and Jason Christie is fifth with 539.

Christie leads the Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens Angler of the Year Standings with 921 points.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6:45 a.m. CT at Coosa Landing. The weigh-in will be held back at the landing at 2:45.

The tournament is being hosted by Greater Gadsden Area Tourism.

SteelShad Fishing Company Teams with Traditions Media

SteelShad Fishing Company Teams with Traditions Media

New communications partnership paves way for innovative product releases to help anglers catch like the pros

East Dorset, Vermont (October 22, 2020) – Following a year filled with successes despite a world-wide pandemic in 2020, the SteelShad Fishing Company has partnered with outdoors industry strategic marketing and communications leader, Traditions Media, to get the word out on their innovative, easy-to-use and fish-catching bladebaits.

“I’m truly excited for the SteelShad brand and the rapid growth our business has experienced over the past year,” says company CEO, Kevin Lewis. “Designed and perfected by highly skilled anglers who are on the water daily, our SteelShad bladebaits are easy to use, super-productive and catch a wide range of species in both freshwater and saltwater environments. Whether you’re targeting bass, muskie, pike, walleye or trout in your favorite honey hole or hitting the flats, back bays and open ocean waters for stripers, redfish and snook, these lures cast a country mile and feature a furious, built-in vibrating action fish just can’t resist. That action is the result of a lure shape so unique it has recently received trademark protection.”

SteelShad bladebaits are so productive some anglers consider them “secret weapons,” the kind you keep under wraps. “But we want everyone to try them,” says Lewis with a chuckle, “so we’ve teamed-up with Traditions Media because we want every angler to know our baits make fishing simple, easy and fun. Long story short: anglers love the SteelShad because ‘Fish Bite It!’”

Teaming-up with Traditions Media proved an easy choice for the SteelShad team, reveals Lewis. “We know that Traditions is highly respected in the fishing industry, and we know they already work with several trusted brands. Everything we’ve seen from them has been top shelf. “

Stephen Price, President and CFO of SteelShad agrees. “Hiring Traditions seems like a great fit. We’ve been watching their material and talking about teaming-up with them for over a year, so it’s been an easy decision. We really appreciate how their staff knows the fishing game, both on the water and behind the scenes. We love how their press releases and social media tell a story and provide anglers specific tips and tactics while imparting product information. They write with greater depth and more detail than other communications companies we’ve researched, so anglers get ideas for their next fishing trip from every piece they read. You can really tell their staff spends a lot of time on the water and in the woods. You can’t beat that first-hand experience.”

That true outdoors experience seeps down from the top says Traditions Media President, Noel Vick. “For me, this is a back to the future moment. I’ve fished bladebaits for years, including classics like the Reef Runner Cicada and Heddon Sonar. But I can tell you that nothing reverberates and elicits strikes like a SteelShad. The action is intense. I’ve never felt a lure that vibrates like this before, whether cast or trolled.”

Vick continues: “There are numbers of new entries in the reborn bladebait category, most predicated on cosmetics and finishes. Don’t be fooled by SteelShad’s outwardly simple looks, though. It’s the best performer. The function of a bladebait is to emit the most sonic vibrations and flash when it rolls from side to side. That’s SteelShad. Can fish really see all that wasted detail when a bladebait rips through the water? The answer is no. SteelShad invests its resources in building the best performing bait, not window dressing that’s aimed solely at looking fancy in the packaging.”

That, says Lewis, is the kind of first-hand information SteelShad wants to get out to the public. “How well our products work is acknowledged by the retailers that are backing them and putting them on their shelves to help every angler catch like a pro. We’ve made great strides on our own and we’ve been looking for the right partner to help us get the word out in a more amplified way: “Any Depth, Any Fish, Any Season.” With Traditions helping us to better spread our message across all media platforms, there’s nothing that can hold us back.”

Montgomery Claimed Victory in Opening Shotgun Round, Remaining Seven Anglers Compete to Finish in Top Three in Elimination Round

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (Oct. 22, 2020) – Episode Three of the Major League Fishing (MLF) 2020 General Tire World Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops is set to premiere this Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7 a.m. EDT on Discovery. The Championship event, shot over six days in late July in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, showcases 16 MLF pro anglers culminating the 2020 Cup season and competing for a top prize of $100,000.

Saturday’s all-new two-hour episode features the remaining seven anglers from Shotgun Round 1, competing on Lake Pokegama – a fishery that saw Cody Meyer smash multiple MLF Cup records in last week’s Shotgun Round 2 episode.

“Cody shattered dang near every record that we had in last week’s episode,” said Marty Stone, MLF Director of Event Research and Program Analyst. “It’s fairly common to see this lake kick out two to four bass under every dock, but Cody said that he was seeing 15 to 20 fish under some docks. He said it looked like an aquarium. Lake Pokegama is a special fishery, and what these guys have been doing under the boat docks here is incredible.

“It was a bit surprising to see the smallmouth not play more of a role,” Stone continued. “But we’ve learned that Pokegama has had a record spawn of smelt this year. Smelt are the north’s version of a blueback minnow. So, the smallmouth didn’t sit down on the ledges like they normally do – they were out in the middle of the lake chasing smelt. We saw the docks in the bays on the main lake really come into play. It’ll be interesting to see if the docks hold up for Group 1, or if the smallmouth will become a factor as the tournament progresses.”

Pro Andy Montgomery was the winner of the Shotgun Round 1 and has advanced directly into the Sudden Death Round. The remaining seven pros from that round will compete in their Elimination Round Saturday on Discovery. The Elimination Round features the remaining seven starting with their day one total and trying to add to it, to catch the largest total two-day cumulative weight. Only the top three will advance into the Sudden Death Round.

The seven anglers competing Saturday on Discovery will start the day in:

1st:          Jordan Lee of Cullman, Ala., 23 bass, 41-2
2nd:         Greg Vinson of Wetumpka, Ala., 14 bass, 39-12
3rd:          Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., 11 bass, 28-9
4th:          Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., seven bass, 14-11
5th:          Takahiro Omori of Tokyo, Japan, eight bass, 14-4
6th:          Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., seven bass, 13-7
7th:          Bobby Lane of Lakeland,  Fla., five bass, 10-1

The 2020 General Tire World Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops is a six-episode, two-hour series that features 16 MLF pro anglers visiting Northern Minnesota to compete on four different fisheries across the region, including Pokegama Lake, Wabana Lake, Turtle Lake, and Spider Lake. The fisheries are unknown to the anglers – they do not learn where they are competing until they arrive to the launch ramp each morning of competition.

The 16 anglers that compete in the 2020 General Tire World Championship are: Casey Ashley, Brent Ehrler, Edwin Evers, Bobby Lane, Jordan Lee, Jared Lintner, Aaron Martens, Cody Meyer, Andy Montgomery, Michael Neal, Takahiro Omori, Jacob Powroznik, Mark Rose, Jeff Sprague, Greg Vinson and Jacob Wheeler. For more information on the qualifying process, visit MajorLeagueFishing.com/MLF-101.

The General Tire World Championship, hosted by Visit Grand Rapids, will air on the Discovery Channel as six, two-hour original episodes each Saturday morning debuting on Oct. 10, 2020, and running through Nov. 14, airing from 7 to 9 a.m. EDT. Dock Talk: B.A.S.S. Nation Leadership Nominations

B.A.S.S. Nation Leadership Nominations

[print_link]

In the spirit of 2020 nominations, campaigns, and an election…the view in B.A.S.S. Nation Virginia is no different. Due to COVID-19, Board Members virtually gather and meetings aren’t held face-to-face in Clarksville, VA as they are accustomed to. However, meeting protocols exist for a purpose. At present, an opportunity is open for any club member to nominate an acting Board member to compete for the Federation President seat. By-laws state that after two consecutive terms are served by an elected President, the seat opens for Federation Leadership nominations.

In most changes or pivots in a leadership seat, there is a chatter amongst members about what the future lends to the local membership. Bass Nation fishing comes with an opportunity for a National platform to the sport. Leadership will always influence connections, sponsors, discounts, and relationships to that coveted chance. Transparency in the use of membership dues, and what the club can deliver in value to fisherman is imperative. Hey, membership dues sign the checks on leadership decisions too!
With tournament circuits competing for the angler’s dollar, and a decline in federation membership…is the answer refreshed leadership? Is there an appeal to the modern angler? Is the Federation positioning anglers for a national competitive platform adequately? Appeal and branding are ever-apparent on the big-stage of fishing… capitalizing on the voice of the Federation could be a viable path. I know that my personal engagement to the local Federation would be more active with new approaches and relatable leadership. Be informed, nominate new leadership, and cast your vote. To better understand more about the transition of leadership in the Federation, the By-laws link is here:

Toyota Series to Host Event on Dale Hollow Lake

Toyota Series to Host Event on Dale Hollow Lake

[print_link]

MONROE, Tenn. (Oct. 21, 2020) – The 2020 Toyota Series Central Division will wrap up its season in Monroe, Tennessee next week (Oct. 29-31) with the Toyota Series at Dale Hollow Lake. Hosted by the Byrdstown-Pickett County Chamber of Commerce, the three-day tournament will feature the region’s best bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize of up to $65,000, plus a $35,000 bonus if the winner is a qualified Phoenix Boat owner.

“We’ve had a pretty nice fall without any major cold fronts yet, which has made fishing a little tough,” said Major League Fishing pro Ott DeFoe of Blaine, Tennessee. “Getting colder weather in before the tournament would actually help the bite and trigger fish to start feeding for the fall.”

DeFoe said anglers will have several options on Dale Hollow and he expects to see multiple techniques and depths on the fishery.

“I typically fish real shallow here this time of year, from topwater out to 5 feet, but an angler can take whatever they like best and make it work right now,” said Defoe. “Fall is one of the tougher times because the fish are scattered and not all doing the same thing, but there are definitely more opportunities.

“I expect to see a couple topwater, walking-style baits like the Storm Arashi Top Walker, as well as a buzzbait or plopper-style baits and Rapala DT Series Crankbaits from a shallow-runner DT4 to a DT20, which is a great choice to target fish in deeper water, as well as a ½ ounce jig and a 3/8-ounce finesse jig.”

Dale Hollow Lake protects its fishery with special fishing regulations, allowing anglers to only keep five black bass species combined per day, with a minimum-size limit of 12 inches for spotted bass and 15 inches for largemouth bass. Of the five-fish limit, only two smallmouth bass may be kept per day – one over 21 inches and one under 16 inches.

“Dale Hollow is a great fishery with a really good population of largemouth and plenty over 3 pounds,” continued DeFoe. “Everyone thinks of smallmouth on that lake, but the smallmouth are protected with the slot limit and can’t really be targeted in the tournament. If you catch a bonus big one, that’s good, but the anglers will mostly be targeting largemouth.”

DeFoe said he anticipates anglers that get on the fish will bring in 15 to 16 pounds per day, with the winning weight being 45 to 47 pounds over the three-day tournament.

“Dale Hollow isn’t far from Lake Cumberland, where the Toyota Series Championship will be held, so baits and techniques that work in Dale Hollow may carry over into the championship as well,” said DeFoe. “I’d expect anglers to use this tournament as a bit of an early practice for the championship.”

Anglers will take off daily at 7 a.m. CDT from the Sunset Marina and Resort in Monroe. Weigh-ins will also be held at the marina and will begin at 3 p.m. Attendance is limited to competing anglers and essential staff only. Fans are encouraged to follow the event online through the “FLW Live” weigh-in broadcasts and daily coverage at FLWFishing.com.

In Toyota Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event, scaling up for every 20 boats over 160 and scaling down for every boat below 160. With a 160-boat field, pros fish for a top prize of $40,000, plus an extra $35,000 if FLW PHOENIX BONUS qualified. Co-anglers cast for the top prize of a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard (valued at $33,500). With a 260-boat field, pros fish for a top award of $65,000, plus an extra $35,000 if FLW PHOENIX BONUS qualified. Co-anglers cast for the top prize of a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard (valued at $33,500) plus $5,000 cash.

The 2020 Toyota Series consists of eight divisions – Central, Eastern, Northern, Plains, Southeastern, Southern, Southwestern and Western – each holding three regular-season events, along with the International division. Anglers who fish all three qualifiers in any of the eight divisions and finish in the top 25 will qualify for the no-entry-fee Toyota Series Championship for a shot at winning $235,000 cash, including a $35,000 FLW PHOENIX BONUS for qualified anglers. The winning co-angler at the championship earns a new Phoenix 518 Pro bass boat with a 115-horsepower outboard. The 2020 Toyota Series Championship will be held Dec. 3-5 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky, and is hosted by the Somerset Tourist & Convention Commission and the Burnside Tourism Commission.
