Tenkiller To Offer Species Trio For Bassmaster Elite Series Regular-Season Finale

[print_link]

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — A necessary change will deliver solid opportunity for the final regular-season Bassmaster Elite Series event of the regular season, as anglers set their sights on Eastern Oklahoma’s Lake Tenkiller.

Originally, this event was scheduled at Fort Gibson Lake for May 16-19, but flood conditions forced the postponement. Determining that the ongoing high water there was unsafe, B.A.S.S. announced last week that it was moving the event approximately 40 miles to Tenkiller.

Competition days will be Thursday through Sunday with daily takeoffs at 7 a.m. CT from Chicken Creek Ramp in Cookson, Okla. Weigh-ins for Days 1 and 2 will also be held at Chicken Creek before shifting on Days 3 and 4 to Cherokee Casino Tahlequah. All weigh-ins will be at 4 p.m.

“Oklahoma is excited to welcome the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament to Lake Tenkiller later this month,” said Oklahoma’s Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell. “This event will have a huge economic impact for our state, and is an especially welcome event to this region following the flooding earlier this year.

“We are thankful to our partners with Bassmaster and are thrilled to have tournament participants and fans in northeast Oklahoma. Oklahoma has some of the best fishing in America, and we look forward to showing that off at Lake Tenkiller.”

Lake summary

The tournament site’s official name, Tenkiller Ferry Lake, honors a prominent Cherokee family that operated a ferry service at what is now the dam’s location. The family name is said to be rooted in the “Trail of Tears” era when soldiers and pioneers at Fort Gibson named a Cherokee warrior “Tenkiller” for the number of notches in his bow.

This Illinois River impoundment covers about 12,900 acres. Stretching 35 miles, Tenkiller has an average depth of 51 feet and an impressive assortment of lake features.

“You have a lot of bluffy areas, you have river channels running against the bank, you have several creeks and a river section,” said Elite Series veteran Mark Menendez. “So, you can kind of break it down into a lower, mid- and upper lake — you just won’t have to run as far from one end to the other.”

As of Sept. 11, Tenkiller was 4.88 feet above conservation pool level of 632, with the dam releasing 3,235 cubic feet per second. Torrential spring rains brought the lake to nearly 664 feet in June, with big declines throughout July, some ups and downs in August and a return to the downward trend in early September.

Fishing forecast

Tenkiller’s falling water will no doubt impact the tournament storyline. Noting that the lake has been steadily falling for a couple of weeks, Menendez sees a good opportunity for anglers who can adjust to the changes.

“The water color will be clean enough that it won’t be like the absolute flood we would have been heading into on Fort Gibson,” he said. “We may have to deal with some suspending bass, but I don’t think it will be that big of a problem.

“I think the whole lake will be in play and with only 75 boats on a 35-mile lake, we won’t be fishing behind each other all day. The lake patterns well. So distinguishing a pattern is going to be really important so you can just run new water that fits your pattern.”

Moreover, Menendez points to Tenkillers’ abundance of largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass as a key component for game plans and adjustments.

“You have three distinct populations that will all be in play, so that may change the pattern and location that the next guy pulls up to and how he fishes, depending on what he’s fishing for,” Menendez said. “The smart play will be the mixed bag because that’s going to cost-average things. You’re going to see some trifecta bags this week.”

Given the year’s lingering heat and a forecast of mid-80s to lower-90s for tournament week, anglers will likely find fish holding on to late summer patterns. Menendez expects an array of patterns from topwater lures and crankbaits to worms.

“I think you’re going to see it absolutely all over the board,” he said. “It’ll be that way, one, because of the species stratification and, two, because I think you’re going to have fish scattered from inches deep to 35 feet deep.

“I’d say the winning weight will be between 62 and 66 pounds. We are fishing with a 16-inch limit, but I think if you can get that 16- to 17-pound bag every day and slip a 20 in there on top of it, that could be dangerous.”

The Tenkiller event is the last regular-season Elite Series event of 2019 as anglers fight to qualify for the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship being held on Michigan’s Lake St. Clair Sept. 28-Oct. 1. Only the Top 50 anglers advance to this tournament, where they will compete for their share of $1 million in prize money.

Alabama pro Scott Canterbury leads the AOY race with 679 points, followed by Florida’s Drew Cook (660), Texas pro Chris Zaldain (653) and Indiana’s Bill Lowen (652). Cook also holds the lead for DICK’S Sporting Goods Rookie of the Year.

The winning angler at Tenkiller will receive $100,000 and one of the coveted blue trophies given to all Elite Series winners.

Mark Herndon & Jay Garrard Win PBC Cashion Fishing Rods September 7th 2019 Falls Lake

PBC CASHION FISHING RODS ‘END OF YEAR’ TEAM TOURNAMENT BASS FISHING TRAIL
QUALIFIER #5
Saturday, September 7th, 2019 ~  ~ Falls Lake ~ ~ Ledge Rock Wildlife Ramp

[print_link]

It was again a tough bite today in the PBC Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail Qualifier #5 at Falls Lake. Most of the 38 boat field had a hard time finding 5 good bass but as always, one team did find enough fish top the field and win the cash!! Surface water temps were around 82 degrees and the weather was great, light wind and temps run from 67 to 84. Typical summer/fall bite for the lakes around here.

Mark Herndon (on left) & Jay Garrard won 1st with 5 bass weighing a nice total of 20.71 lbs. and also won 1st Place TWT for a total of $1,703 in prize money!

The 2nd Place team of Todd Sumner & Mike Dinterman caught a 5 fish limit of

bass weighing 13.50 lbs. and along with winning the 2nd Place TWT they took home $845 in winnings. Bobby & David Matthews took 3rd Place with 5 bass weighing 13.46 lbs. taking home $425 in winnings. The 4th Place Team of David Allen & his wife Jennifer (subbing for David’s Son Cody) also won the Big Fish Award for the day with a

real nice 8.53 pounder to take home $866 in cash!!
95 bass were brought to the scales and most looked very healthy! Topwater early, worm rigs, jigs, crankbaits & spinnerbaits in 10′ to 12′ of water on channel dropoffs seemed to be the lures of choice. Most of the smaller bass were caught shallow. Look for bait fish this time of year to increase your odds.

I want to thank Cashion Fishing Rods and all the anglers that participated.
Our next tournament will be the PBC Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Team Tournament Bass Fishing Trail

The Secrets To Landing A Bass Without A Net – MTB

[print_link]

If you watch the pros competing in major bass tournaments, you will notice they never use a net to land their fish. In the late 1970s, B.A.S.S.  instituted a no-net rule, which has been adopted by other major circuits.

The frantic fight of a hooked bass makes it difficult to land fish even with the aid of a net, but the no-net rule has caused the pros to rely on other ways to get bass into the boat. I and other recreational anglers, fortunately, can use nets but there are times when we forget the net or it is buried in a rod box or tangled with other gear.

Here are three practices employed by the pros you can use if your net is unavailable:

Swing For The Fences

Swinging bass into the boat lessens the chances of an angler getting finned or hooked, but this tactic has plenty of pitfalls for losing fish, such as line breakage, knocking the fish into the side of the boat or pulling it completely over the boat and back into the water.

Timing is the key to swinging bass. Try to begin your swing at the same time the fish starts to jump so the momentum of the fish and the pull of your rod lead the bass towards the boat.  Hold your rod at about the 9 o’clock position to begin swinging the fish. If you start any higher you’re going to have trouble because a lot of times the fish are going to hit the side of the boat, which is the worst possible thing to have happen.  Raise your rod as high as possible to make sure the fish clears the side of the boat.

Lip ‘Em and Grip ‘Em

Lipping a bass works best when using finesse techniques with light line or trying to land a big bass on any tackle.  Landing a bass by hand requires grabbing the fish by the lower lip while trying to avoid touching your line or lure. If the fish keeps its mouth closed, pin it against the side of the boat and lip it.

Grab Them By The Belly

After wearing a bass down, coax the fish to lie on its side. Then hold your rod high to keep tension on the line and slip your free hand under the bass’ belly.  Cradling the bass seems to almost paralyze the fish and makes it easier to lift into the boat.

CLARKSVILLE’S WILLIAMS WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON LAKE DARDANELLE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Co-angler Win Goes to Little Rock’s Pinter

[print_link]

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (Sept. 9, 2019) – Boater Charles Williams of Clarksville, Arkansas, won this weekend’s T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Arkie Division tournament on Lake Dardanelle presented by Navionics after catching a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 35 pounds, 9 ounces. For his efforts, Williams took home $4,868.

Williams said he spent each day of the tournament up the Arkansas River, in the Spadra area of the lake.

“I worked along main-lake points that had some good current on them. It seemed like the channel swings were the best,” said Williams, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I was flipping rock and laydown wood – wood that was in the current. It held the bigger fish. If you could find a point that had laydown logs on it, there seemed to always be big fish on them.”

Williams said he flipped a black and blue flake-colored Big Bite Baits Dean Rojas Fighting Frog with a ¼-ounce weight on 25-pound-test Seaguar Flippin’ Fluorocarbon line. He said he also weighed some off of a ½-ounce white and chartreuse Z-Man Evergreen ChatterBait Jack Hammer with a 3½-inch chartreuse and pearl Lake Fork Tackle Live Magic Shad trailer, and a Crack-colored Lucky Craft LC DRS square-billed crankbait. His rod and reel setup was a 7-foot, 8-inch Denali N3 Extra Heavy Flippin’ Rod with a Daiwa Tatula reel set to a 7:3:1 gear ratio.

“I ran to the back of some pockets Saturday in the same area and mainly fished blowholes. If it had a creek channel coming out, that was good,” said Williams.

On Sunday, Williams stuck with his main-lake pattern and was able to catch a limit by 8:30 a.m. Sitting on around 12 pounds of fish, he said he was able to cull up to 17 pounds with the help of a 4-pounder that he caught with an hour left in competition.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Charles Williams, Clarksville, Ark., 10 bass, 35-9, $4,868

2nd:         Mike Rhinehart, Delaware, Ark., 10 bass, 31-6, $2,334

3rd:          Erick Hurst, Clarksville, Ark., 10 bass, 30-10, $1,557

4th:          Chip Hawkins, Little Rock, Ark., 10 bass, 29-5, $1,189

5th:          Josh Hilton, Clarksville, Ark., 10 bass, 25-14, $934

6th:          Wayne Dixon, Morrilton, Ark., 10 bass, 25-14, $856

7th:          Samuel Hutson, Benton, Ark., eight bass, 23-11, $1,325

8th:          Cade Alsbury, Gentry, Ark., 10 bass, 23-10, $700

9th:          Ben Blaschke, Roland, Okla., 10 bass, 23-7, $872

10th:        Brandon Lee, Ratcliff, Ark., 10 bass, 23-2, $545

Complete results can be found at FLWFishing.com.

Hutson caught a bass weighing 5 pounds, 13 ounces – the heaviest of the event in the Boater Division – and earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $547.

Eric Pinter of Little Rock, Arkansas, won the Co-angler Division and $2,608 Sunday after catching a two-day total of nine bass weighing 20 pounds, 5 ounces.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

1st:          Eric Pinter, Little Rock, Ark., nine bass, 20-5, $2,608

2nd:         Matt Russell, Prairie Grove, Ark., eight bass, 18-2, $1,167

3rd;          Derrick Damon, Clarksville, Ark., seven bass, 12-6, $779

4th:          Andrew Wooley, Little Rock, Ark., five bass, 11-14, $645

5th:          Jody Jones, Harvey, Ark., seven bass, 11-7, $517

6th:          Tony Smith, Bryant, Ark., six bass, 11-0, $578

7th:          Matthew Inman, White Hall, Ark., six bass, 10-15, $389

8th:          Trent Jones, Springdale, Ark., four bass, 10-4, $350

9th:          Keith Gardner, Waldo, Ark., five bass, 10-3, $311

10th:        Ethan Sutton, Hot Springs, Ark., three bass, 9-6, $272

Pinter also caught the heaviest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 5 pounds, 10 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $274.

The tournament was hosted by Russellville Advertising and Promotions.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 24-26 BFL Regional Championship on Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2020 BFL All-American will be held April 30-May 2 at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina, and is hosted by Visit Anderson. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

Paris’ Murphy Grabs Co-Angler Win

[print_link]

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 9, 2019) – Boater Bradley Smith of Saint Jacob, Illinois, took home the win at the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division tournament on Lake Shelbyville Sunday after catching a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 23 pounds, 7 ounces. For his win, Smith pocketed $7,310.

“I took off each morning with one rod on the deck,” said Smith, who notched his first win as a boater in BFL competition. “I was pitching to shallow wood, mid-lake. I fished a 3-mile section, anywhere from 2 to 10 feet of water. The first day was sunny, with no wind. The second day we had clouds and rain. I was pretty worried the wood pattern wouldn’t hold up but it ended up working out.”

Smith said he flipped a Texas-rigged, green pumpkin-colored Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver with a 3/8-ounce Strike King Tour Grade tungsten weight.

“The fish were in transition from summer to fall patterns – the bites were hard to come by,” said Smith. “It was sporadic each day. I was able to get a lot in practice that I ended up shaking off. Fortunately, a lot of those fish bit during the tournament.”

Smith said he caught five keepers Saturday and seven on Sunday.

“The best anglers in Illinois compete in this division, so to get a win – especially at a two-day event – was pretty special for me.”

ROANOKE’S HAWKINS WINS TWO-DAY T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE EVENT ON SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE

Maryland’s Gardner Wins Co-angler Division

HUDDLESTON, Va. (Sept. 9, 2019) – Boater Rick Hawkins of Roanoke, Virginia, brought a two-day total of 10 bass to the scale weighing 31 pounds, 10 ounces, to win the two-day T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Piedmont Division super-tournament on Smith Mountain Lake. Hawkins earned $4,682 for his efforts.

“I chose to fish the Roanoke arm the first day and the Blackwater arm the second day,” said Hawkins, who earned his first career victory in FLW competition. “However, it was the same pattern – finding baitfish that were relating to structure in that 20-foot-range and throwing crankbaits.”

Hawkins said that he used a variety of crankbaits to catch his fish throughout the weekend – Rapala DT14 and DT20s, a Strike King 6XD and a 6th Sense Cloud 9. He said he stuck mainly with shad-colored baits – lots of grays, silvers and whites.

“I landed six keeper bites each day,” Hawkins continued. “However, I did have a couple come off that would have helped me. The key was relating the baitfish to the cover at the right depth. If there were baitfish but no cover, there was no fish. If there was cover but no baitfish, there was no fish. I also made around 1000 casts each day. I just kept plugging – so many casts and only six bites a day.”
