Wiggins Blisters Shotgun Round in Record-Breaking Performance  at Phoenix Boats Stage Five Presented by Mercury

MLF pro Jesse Wiggins obliterated the Bass Pro Tour’s single-round catch record with 49 fish, tallying 72 pounds, 4 ounces in Group B’s Shotgun Round on Alabama’s Smith Lake

CULLMAN, Ala. (May 1, 2019) – From the moment it was announced that the Major League Fishing® (MLF) Bass Pro Tour would be making a stop at Lewis Smith Lake in northern Alabama, Jesse Wiggins was tabbed as a favorite.
After his performance in the second Shotgun Round of the Phoenix Boats Stage Five Presented by Mercury, it’s hard not to tab the Alabama pro as THE favorite.
Wiggins – who grew up in Cullman and has been fishing Smith Lake since “Before I can even remember” – obliterated the Bass Pro Tour’s single-round catch record with 49 fish, tallying 72 pounds, 4 ounces and finishing the day with a 16-4 cushion over second-place angler Todd Faircloth (56-0).
“A good day on Smith Lake this time of year is 30, maybe 35 fish, so today was a heckuva day,” Wiggins admitted. “I basically fished two spots all day long, they just happened to be schooled up in both of those spots.”
Wiggins Hit High Gear in Period 2
At the rate that Wiggins caught fish in Period 2, it’s hard to imagine him wanting to stray outside his two Shotgun Round spots at all. Following a 12-fish first period, the St. Croix pro put 21 fish on SCORETRACKER™ in the second period for 32-9, almost all of it on a 3/16-ounce shaky head with a green pumpkin candy Jackall 5.8 Flick Shake Worm.
“Jesse Wiggins did this on a lake in post-spawn that was supposed to be tough,” marveled MLF NOW! analyst Marty Stone. “This performance today isn’t just about him being good on Smith Lake, it’s about Jesse Wiggins just being flat good. You put a really good fisherman on a lake he understands really well and this is what you get.”
But despite a prolific day and a virtually fail-safe cushion above the Elimination Line, Wiggins plans to move out of his spots and spend the day (Elimination Round 2) deciphering how far out of the backs of their spawning pockets Smith Lake’s post-spawn fish have gotten.
“These fish move a lot this time of year,” Wiggins said. “Once they’re done spawning, they head back out onto those points, and it can be a little hard to find them in good numbers. I definitely plan on spending a good amount of my time figuring out how far those fish have moved.”
Elimination Round 1: “Nothing is Certain”
The 40 anglers from Group A return to Smith Lake Thursday for the first Elimination Round of Stage Five, bringing their weights from the first Shotgun Round with them. Based on the results of the first two days of competition, the projected range for the Elimination Line is 48 to 50 pounds – there are eight anglers in Group A whose doubled Shotgun Round weights would place them within a single scorable bass of the Elimination Line.
“Because all these scorable bass are so close in weight and these guys are catching so many of them, this could be the wildest Elimination Round we’ve ever had,” said Stone. “You go more than 10 minutes without catching fish here and you drop two to five places quickly. When you’re dealing with shad-spawn fish, they’re very ‘here and now’ and these guys in Group A have to relocate their fish. Nothing is safe and nothing is certain.”
Shotgun Round 2 By the Numbers

Group B totaled 997 fish: 304 in Period 1, 464 in Period 2 and 229 in Period 3.
Looking Ahead
The Top 20 anglers from each of the two Elimination Round groups will advance to the Knockout Round on Saturday, where weights will be zeroed. The Top 10 anglers in the Knockout Round will advance to the Championship Round on Sunday.
How, Where & When to Watch
Competition begins daily at 6:30 a.m. CT, with live, official scoring available via SCORETRACKER on MajorLeagueFishing.com and on the MLF app. The MLF NOW! live stream starts at 9 a.m. CT, with live, on-the-water coverage continuing until lines out at 2:30 p.m. The Berkley Postgame Show live stream will start at 4 p.m. daily.

TABLE ROCK LAKE TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES TOURNAMENT PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

[print_link]

BRANSON, Mo. (April 30, 2019) – Table Rock Lake and the city of Branson are set to host a field of 260 bass anglers May 9-11 for the Costa Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Series Central Division tournament on Table Rock Lake presented by Power-Pole. The three-day tournament, hosted by Explore Branson, will feature top regional bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize package of up to $92,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard in the pro division.

“It’s going to be one of those tournaments where everyone has a good time – they’re going to catch a lot of fish,” said FLW Tour pro Jeremy Lawyer of Sarcoxie, Missouri, who finished in third place when the FLW Series visited Table Rock Lake in 2018. “The weights may not be especially heavy because the fish are moving and it’s hard to keep them kind of hemmed up in the Ozarks around the spawn. But as far as everybody catching limits, we’ll see all three species play. It’s just going to be a fun, fun tournament.”

Lawyer went on to say it will be a “full-blown” spawn and postspawn bass event.

“I think you’ll see anglers catch 20 pounds one day, and then 12 the next,” said Lawyer. “I think a lot of the bigger fish have probably already spawned, so they’re going to be in that funk, and you can’t target 20 pounds a day sight-fishing. I think guys are going to find enough fish to really be strong one of the three days and make the cut, but by the last day, they may run out of sight-fish.

“The most productive areas will probably be in the cleanest water down-lake – you’ll be able to see what’s going on so much better,” continued Lawyer. “We’ve been getting some rain, and if the water level gets up and in the bushes, the rivers could really play. As far as the numbers of fish, though, they’re going to be strong throughout the entire lake.”

Lawyer said fans should expect to see a good topwater bite and a wide assortment of lures being thrown. He mentioned Carolina-, shaky-head-, Ned- and split-shot-rigs, as well as football-head jigs as popular choices.

Lawyer went on to say that he expects that an angler who can average 16 to 17 pounds a day (48 to 51 pounds total) should be in a good position to win.

Anglers will take off from Table Rock State Park Marina located at 380 State Park Marina Road in Branson at 6 a.m. CDT each day of competition. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins will also be held at the state park beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Bass Pro Shops located at 1 Bass Pro Drive in Branson, and will begin at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At Table Rock Lake, pros will fish for a top prize of up to $92,000 including a brand new Ranger Z518L boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a brand new Ranger Z175 boat with a 115-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard, and $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 on Lake Cumberland in Burnside, Kentucky.

14 Pound Bass Breaks Kentucky State Record

14 Pound Bass Breaks Kentucky State Record

[print_link]
Mark Ward and his record setting 14 pound 9 ounce bass.

Mark Ward spent part of his Good Friday pitching a 6-inch soft plastic lizard around a small Kentucky Lake and let’s just say it paid off. Big time.

“I pitched a lizard in there and the 4-pounder showed interest,” Ward said. “Then, another came in and looked like a big log. The 4-pound fish triggered her to pick it up. I set the hook and it was on. Good Friday turned into a great Friday for me.”

Mark Ward

The record-setting fish hit the scales at 14 pounds and nine ounces and measured out to 26.8 inches long. The big bass was enticed by a 6-inch soft plastic lizard in a Junebug pattern. Mark was fishing a baitcasting rod spooled up with 14-pound test monofilament line. The previous record weighed 13 pounds and ten ounces and was caught from Wood Creek Lake in 1984.

Wheeler Gathering Momentum After Shotgun Round on Smith Lake

MLF pro Jacob Wheeler piled up 36 of his 38 scorable bass in the first two periods of Shotgun Round 1 to lead Group A at the end of the day with a total of 61-pounds, 15-ounces.
Wheeler Maintains Momentum with Dominant Performance in Shotgun Round
at Phoenix Boats Stage Five Presented by Mercury
[print_link]
CULLMAN, Ala. (April 30, 2019)  – If you ever wondered if momentum is a thing in professional bass fishing, look no further than the five names at the top of SCORETRACKER™ after the first Shotgun Round of the Bass Pro Tour Phoenix Boats Stage Five Presented by Mercury: Jacob Wheeler, Andy Morgan, Wesley Strader, Ott DeFoe and Edwin Evers.
Led by Wheeler’s record-breaking 38-fish, 61-pound, 15-ounce performance, that quintet of Major League Fishing® (MLF) pros racked up 138 scorable bass for just over 236 pounds to leave Smith Lake with comfortable cushions to carry into their Elimination Round competition on Thursday.
It was a continuation of recent success for all five anglers: Evers has four top-10 finishes in four events this season and leads the Bass Pro Tour points race; DeFoe is just a month removed from a Bassmaster Classic win; Strader has seven Top 20s in his last season-and-a-half; Morgan is shooting for back-to-back wins; and Wheeler has two Top 5s in his last four events.
“Momentum makes you a little fearless, for lack of a better term,” said Morgan, who entered the week fresh off a win two weeks ago at Stage Four on Lake Chickamauga. “You’re just kinda ‘with it’ from the get-go, whether you’re getting bites from the get-go or not. Everybody is at their best when they’re relaxed, and that’s what everybody is after in this sport: to be relaxed, and to just keep it rolling.”
Wheeler Was Dominant on Day 1
No matter how you measure Wheeler’s performance, “rolling” is an accurate description. On a fishery that showed signs of being in a slight post-spawn lull before the event started, Wheeler figured out the right patterns and the right locations early in the day, piling up 36 of his 38 fish in the first two periods and overtaking Morgan, who had rang up 18 fish and a big lead in Period 1.
“That morning bite is definitely a key opportunity to catch a majority of your fish,” Wheeler admitted. “Your goal is to try to catch as much as you possibly can in the Shotgun Round so you’re not under the pressure to have to catch them in the Elimination Round. You see this day in and day out in this format: a good Shotgun Round puts guys in position to try to go dial in new patterns – or just stay on top of what’s going on – in the Elimination Round, so they can make it to the Knockout Round, and then make the Top 10 cut.”
Wheeler’s assessment of the morning bite is accurate: 238 fish were recorded on SCORETRACKER in the first period; that total dropped to 203 and 195 in Periods 1 and 2.

Group B Up Next
The 40 anglers in Group B compete Wednesday in Shotgun Round 2. Based on Day 1 results, the Elimination Line will hover around 25 pounds, but and if weather forecasts are correct, Group B’s round could be even more of a smashfest than Day 1.
“Day 2 is supposed to be a little overcast and maybe blowing a little bit, so I think we’ll have a little bit better conditions for fish to bite,” said Group B competitor Jeff Sprague.
Looking Ahead
The field will carry their Shotgun Round weights into the two Elimination Rounds on Thursday and Friday for the Elimination Rounds. The Top 20 anglers from each group will advance to the Knockout Round on Saturday. The Top 10 anglers in the Knockout Round will advance to the Championship Round on Sunday.
How, Where, When to Watch
Competition begins daily at 6:30 a.m. CT, with live, official scoring available via SCORETRACKER on MajorLeagueFishing.com and on the MLF app. The MLF NOW! live stream starts at 9 a.m. CT, with live, on-the-water coverage continuing until lines out at 2:30 p.m. The Berkley Postgame Show live stream will start at 4 p.m. daily.

EDMOND’S LILLIE WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE TOURNAMENT ON EUFAULA LAKE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Checotah’s Duvall Takes Co-Angler Division

[print_link]

EUFAULA, Okla. (April 29, 2019) – Boater Justin Lillie of Edmond, Oklahoma, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division tournament on Eufaula Lake presented by Navionics Sunday with five bass weighing 18 pounds, 8 ounces. Lillie earned $4,259 for his day on the water.

“I basically fished around the dam on the upper side of the lake 20 miles from takeoff and caught five keepers,” said Lillie, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I focused on postspawn bass around rock ledges. I had five locations I caught fish at, just running different little rock ledges and outcroppings.

“I worked in 6 to 10 feet of water,” continued Lillie. “I caught the biggest fish – my first – about 10 minutes in, and then one keeper every two hours after that.”

Lillie said he used a ¾- or 1-ounce white and chartreuse-colored Nichols Pulsator Metal Flake Double Willow spinnerbait with a chartreuse Zoom Fat Albert Grub trailer on 20-pound-test P-Line Tactical Fluorocarbon line, and a 7-foot, 5-inch Halo TI Series heavy-action rod with an Ardent C-Force 7:1 reel. He also weighed one on a shaky-head rig with a darker-colored Zoom Magnum Trick Worm.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Justin Lillie, Edmond, Okla., five bass, 18-8, $4,259

2nd:         Nick Kincaid, Coweta, Okla., five bass, 16-15, $2,205

3rd:          James Marsh, Thomas, Okla., five bass, 16-12, $1,336

4th:          John Soukup, Agra, Okla., five bass, 16-8, $1,035

5th:          Roger Hughes, Bartlesville, Okla., five bass, 15-6, $802

Matthew Palesano of Chickasha, Oklahoma, caught a 6-pound, 15-ounce bass – the heaviest of the event in the Boater Division – and earned the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $550.

Dusty Duvall of Checotah, Oklahoma, won the Co-angler Division and $2,019 Sunday after catching five bass weighing 16 pounds, 15 ounces.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

1st:          Dusty Duvall, Checotah, Okla., five bass, 16-15, $2,019

2nd:         Jackie Copeland, Sallisaw, Okla., five bass, 16-3, $842

2nd:         Kenny Howard, Watts, Okla., five bass, 16-3, $842

4th:          Blayke Haggard, Gans, Okla., five bass, 14-9, $671

5th:          Nic Conger, Fort Smith, Ark., five bass, 14-8, $454

6th:          Hank Williams, Claremore, Okla., four bass, 14-0, $370

7th:          Clint Symes, Yukon, Okla., five bass, 11-4, $336

8th:          Joseph Morenzoni, Beggs, Okla., four bass, 11-0, $303

9th:          Steve Bradfield, Claremore, Okla., five bass, 10-14, $269

10th:        Kole Poindexter, Eufaula, Okla., three bass, 10-13, $235

Jase Morris of Edmond, Oklahoma, caught the heaviest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $272.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 17-19 BFL Regional Championship on Kentucky and Barkley lakes in Gilbertsville, Kentucky, presented by Evinrude. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518L with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2019 BFL All-American will be held May 30-June 1 at the Potomac River in Marbury, Maryland, and is hosted by the Charles County Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism and the Commissioners of Charles County. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

Moore and Carnes Win ABA Bass Pro Shops 150 event on Lake Norman April 27,2019

ATHENS, Ala. – The team of Richard Moore of Clover SC and Chris Carnes of York SC won the Bass Pro Shops 150 series team event held on Lake Norman on 4/27/19. The team sacked up a five bass limit weighing 16.34 pounds. Their limit was anchored by a bass weighing 4.42 pounds.  For the win Moore and Carnes took home a fully rigged Tracker Pro Team 175 XTE Tournament edition boat with a 75 HP Mercury 4 stroke motor valued at $20,000.00.

“Things for us really started out slow. We were just catching smaller fish. We pulled into a pocket and found a lot better quality of fish. We caught most of our fish on a shakeyhead,” said Moore.

In second place the team of Brent Rankin of Mt. Holly NC and Ron Moore of Indian Trail NC weighed in a five bass limit weighing 15.08 pounds. Their limit was anchored by a bass weighing 5.37 pounds which was the biggest bass weighed in.

“We caught a lot of fish today, but the better fish came from a 100-yard stretch of grass.
We caught three on a chatter bait and two on a red eye shad,” said Rankin.

Taking third the team of Jonathan Lutz of Dallas NC and TJ Harris weighed in a five bass limit weighing 15.01 pounds. Their limit was anchored by a bass weighing 4.09 pounds.

“We caught all of our fish on a True South jig in Green Pumpkin. We fished docks and the fish were positioned anywhere from the backs to the fronts of the docks,” said Lutz

In fourth place the team of Tommy Murphy Jr. of Newton NC and Matthew Burke of Weddington NC weighed in five bass for 12.90 pounds. Rounding out the top five the team of Conner Alms of Mooresville NC and Troy Lehew of Charlotte NC weighed in five bass for 12.29 pounds.
