Best Day Lifts Darold Gleason To Victory In Bassmaster Open At Toledo Bend

MANY, La. —A big shift in weather conditions and the kindness of a fellow competitor opened the door for local favorite Darold Gleason to show off his home lake’s potential with a 25-pound, 3-ounce catch that yielded a tournament total of 40-2 and delivered a long-awaited win at the Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on Toledo Bend Reservoir.

After fierce thunderstorms cancelled Thursday’s scheduled second day of competition, the full field competed in today’s final round. Although the forecast called for more storms, Toledo Bend saw a foggy and relatively calm day that contrasted starkly with the more challenging conditions the Many, La., angler faced on Day 1.

“This is probably the best day of tournament fishing I’ve had out here,” said Gleason, who runs South Toledo Bend Guide Service. “Toledo Bend is one of the best lakes in the country. It’s fishing kind of tough right now with these cold conditions, but it is chock full of big ones.”

Targeting offshore structure that rose from a depth of 24 feet to 10 feet and created a bass-friendly current break, Gleason said he needed to hold his boat in a particular position. He struggled to do that on the first day, when he caught a limit that weighed 14-15 and landed him in 20th place. Today’s lighter winds, he said, brought a pleasantly different story.

Gleason caught his winning fish on a Strike King 6XD crankbait in blue/chartreuse, a 6th Sense C-15 crankbait also in blue/chartreuse, a 3/4-ounce V&M football jig in blue shadow with a green pumpkin V&M J-Bug trailer and a Carolina rig baited with either a V&M Pork Shad (green pumpkin candy) or a V&M Chop Stick (watermelon candy red).

Gleason said he fished the same spot as fellow pro Gary Adkins, whom he thanked for leaving him sufficient space to operate.

“The gentleman who shared the spot with me was the most respectful angler I’ve ever been around,” Gleason said. “He didn’t have to be that way, but he was. If it weren’t for him allowing me to fish where I needed to fish, I would not have been able to catch what I caught.”

For his effort, Gleason earned $42,800 and a berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, if he competes in the remaining three Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens in the Central Division.

“I’m blessed to have some great friends in this industry, and I’ve cheered them when they had their Classic chance,” he said. “For me to get mine, it’s just everything to me.”

Taku Ito of Chiba, Japan, placed second with 30-10. A limit of 15-4 put him in 16th place in the first round, and he turned in a highly consistent effort of 15-4 today.

“Two days ago, I caught fish on a spinnerbait shallow in muddy water around cypress trees,” Ito said. “But today, it was tough, so I fished the same spot, but deeper — in 20 feet. I used a 6.5-inch green pumpkin straight worm, Neko rigged with a 3/16-ounce weight.

“I caught three fish on the Neko rig and two fish on a 1/2-ounce white spinnerbait with willowleaf and Colorado blades. Slow rolling the spinnerbait was the key.”

Logan Latuso of Gonzalez, La., improved from 22nd place and finished third with 30-0. He added 15-6 to his Day 1 weight of 14-10. He attributed his success to sticking with his shallow water strength.

“I was just covering water, trying to find the best deal,” Latuso said. “I caught all my fish on a Delta Lures spinnerbait and a Delta Lures Thunder Jig with a V&M J-Bug trailer. I just fished anything in the water — shallow wood, shallow grass in the backs of creeks where the water was a little warmer. Today, my prime area got a little muddy from the rain, so I had to try new water, and it paid off.”

Travis Alcock of Antioch, Ill., won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 9-1.

Andrew Thomasson of Dublin, Va., won the co-angler division with 18-5. After placing 19th on Day 1 with 7-7, he added 10-14 in the final round and won $21,400.

Thomasson caught most of his bass on a dropshot with a Roboworm in the “margarita mutilator” color. His largest fish of the day, an estimated 6-pounder, ate a 1/2-ounce chartreuse/blue/white spinnerbait with a willowleaf/Colorado blade combination.

“I was slow rolling my spinnerbait in about 5 feet; they weren’t hitting higher in the water column,” Thomasson said. “I bumped it off a stump, and that fish grabbed it.

“I fished my dropshot in about 18 feet of water and used a short leader to keep the bait right on the bottom with a 1/2-ounce weight. On the graph, you could see them right on the bottom.”

Ryan Bowman of Seneca, S.C., won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for the co-angler division with a 6-6 largemouth.

N.C. State Anglers Vault Into Lead In Bassmaster College Series Tournament On Lake Norman

CORNELIUS, N.C. — With more than 250 boats to send through takeoff one at a time, it can take a long while for those drawing a high boat number in this week’s Carhartt Bassmaster College Series tournament presented by Bass Pro Shops to get a lure in the water.

That happened to Jacob Moore and Gilliam Tharpe of North Carolina State in the first round on Lake Norman, but they were able to take full advantage of an early morning bite today, when the boat order was reversed, and they were among the first to head out.

Moore and Tharpe, who were in 17th place after weighing four bass on Thursday, vaulted to the top of the leaderboard Friday with a limit of five bass that weighed 15 pounds, 10 ounces. The Wolfpack anglers have a two-day total of 27-1 which is nearly 2 1/2 pounds more than Oklahoma State’s Taylor Hamburger and Tristen Turley, who have 24-11.

The top 12 teams will compete Saturday in the final round of the tournament — the first of four regular-season Bassmaster College Series events scheduled this year. The dozen remaining teams will win a share of $8,500 in cash for their respective bass fishing teams, with the winning twosome earning a $2,500 prize for their school.

The heaviest largemouth bass for most teams came during the first few hours of fishing Thursday, and the trend continued today. But unlike the first day, when the rain eventually slacked and the sun shined for the first time in a week, the showers started overnight and didn’t relent through weigh-in today at Blythe Landing. Temperatures stayed in the high 40s all day, too, which made conditions especially rough on the anglers.

Saturday’s weather is expected to be just as wet, with temperatures hovering in the low to mid-40s all day.
Moore and Tharpe haven’t let the dismal conditions rattle them, though. They had a limit weighing about 13 pounds by 11 a.m. Friday, and they made slight upgrades twice in the afternoon to add heft to their haul.

“I think a lot of people are trying to catch these bigger (largemouth bass) by cranking,” Tharpe said. “That was our bread-and-butter technique yesterday. But today, the fish were just not eating a crankbait. Whether it’s because of the fishing pressure, the weather changing, whatever… we had to adjust throughout the day. We’re doing a little bit of everything.”

Moore caught the biggest bass of the tournament on Thursday. The 6-13 largemouth anchored his team’s Day 1 catch of four bass that totaled 11-7. Though that’s easily the biggest bass of the tournament so far, having a catch of that caliber builds confidence.

“You can’t really target something like that,” Moore said. “But we’re in an area with a bunch of largemouth. We’ll catch whatever bites and hope we get one that big again.”

Tharpe said once he and Moore had 15-plus pounds onboard Friday, they vacated their best spot and scouted a few other areas for potential keepers. They won’t have to be as conservative on Saturday.

“That’s the difference,” Tharpe said. “There’s no reason to conserve anything tomorrow. We can just fish our spot until it’s empty if we need to.”

Hamburger and Turley caught a 15-14 limit on Friday; the biggest bag of the day. They caught two spotted bass in the 3- to 4-pound range early, and targeted largemouth later in the afternoon, with the heaviest weighing approximately 5 pounds.

Hamburger said he and his teammate had found a good area for largemouth bass, and they have tried to conserve it by minimizing their time there. “I didn’t want to lean on it too hard,” Hamburger said. “Once we got the good bag today, we backed off a little bit. We hope to find a limit early tomorrow and then go for largemouth again.”

Also fishing in the finals Saturday are Benjamin Hager and Noah Shaver, University of North Carolina-Charlotte, third with 24-10; Isaac Duncan (fishing solo), Blue Mountain College, fourth with 24-9; and Cole Breeden and Cameron Smith, Drury University, fifth with 24-0; Jacob Louis and Nathan Doty, McKendree University, sixth with 24-0; Chandlar Ellis and Gil Senn, Lander University, seventh with 23-9; Garrett Warren and Eric Lampkin, Snead State Community College, eighth with 23-7; Louis Monetti and Andrew Weaver, UNC-Charlotte, ninth with 22-12; William Nichols and Jamon Phillips, Jacksonville State University, 10th with 21-13; Justin Barnes and Adam Carroll, University of Montevallo, 11th with 21-10; and Miller Spivey and Trey Dickert, University of Montevallo, 12th with 21-7.

Moore and Tharpe remain in the lead for the Carhartt Big Bass Award and the $500 Carhartt gift certificate that goes to the tandem with the heaviest bass of the tournament. Ellis and Senn, the Day 1 leaders with a 16-10 limit, remain in the lead for the Bass Pro Shops Big Bag Award and the $250 Bass Pro Shops certificate that accompanies it.

In all, 256 college tandems from around the U.S. started the three-day tournament on Lake Norman. The top 10 percent of those duos (26 teams in all) automatically advance to the college national championship tournament to be held at a yet to be disclosed fishery later this year.

The Bassmaster College Series tournament presented by Bass Pro Shops is sponsored by Visit Lake Norman, Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte.

The Day 3 launch will begin at 7 a.m. ET at Blythe Landing. Weigh-in will start at 3 p.m. The weigh-in can be seen on Bassmaster.com.

REGISTRATION FOR FLW TOUR MARSHAL EXPERIENCE AT LAKE SEMINOLE UNDER WAY

REGISTRATION FOR FLW TOUR MARSHAL EXPERIENCE AT LAKE SEMINOLE UNDER WAY

FLW Tour Marshal Program Offers Front Row Seat to World Class Bass Fishing on Lake Seminole

[print_link]

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (Feb. 22, 2019) – Registration for the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Tour Marshal Experience is under way for the upcoming FLW Tour at Lake Seminole presented by Costa, March 7-10. Introduced for 2019, the FLW Tour Marshal program offers serious anglers and fans a rare opportunity to get in the boat with a competitor on the FLW Tour – the world’s most prestigious tournament-fishing circuit – and gain valuable insight into how to break down a fishery, all the while receiving VIP treatment and playing a vital role in live coverage of the event.

Marshals will be paired with one of 170 FLW Tour pros as they compete on Lake Seminole for a top prize of up to $125,000. Fans who sign up will be eligible for a top cash award of $2,500. The top Marshal is determined by the combined weight of the pros they are randomly paired with each day of the event, with payouts extending down to 10th place.

The program, which is available to FLW members who are at least 16 years old, debuted earlier this season. Just last month at the second Tour stop of the year on Lake Toho in Florida, 70-year-old retired minister Dan Hughes of Fitzgerald, Georgia, won $2,500 as the event’s top Marshal while witnessing firsthand how then-tournament leader John Cox and pro Chris Neau broke down the lake each day.

“I liked it from the get-go when I read the article about it and looked it up online,” Hughes said. “I said, ‘I can do this.’ I just had my 70th birthday back in January and I said, by George, I’m going to do some things I want to do now. I told my wife that and she said go ahead. I brought her down with me as my fishing partner. She took me to the marina and picked me up when it was over in the afternoon. She had a big time too.”

Hughes plans on being a marshal at both Lake Seminole and Chickamauga Lake, two of the next four stops on the FLW Tour and the two Tour events closest to home for him. And he’s been spreading the word about the marshal program and all it has to offer. The program appealed to Hughes from the very start. He wants others to know about it, too.

“The check has already been deposited,” Hughes said. “That’s the most I’ve ever made in anything in my life like that. My wife said now she can go shopping. That’s the way it works. We’ve been married 47 years, so I’m used to it.”

Lake Seminole marshals are invited to attend a VIP cookout and seminar with select FLW Tour pros on Wednesday, March 6. They will also get behind-the-scenes access throughout the event and receive exclusive FLW clothing. As an added bonus, each Marshal will also be entered to win a new Ranger Z518L powered by a 200-horsepower Evinrude E-TEC G2 that will be given away to one lucky Marshal at the end of the season. Marshals will receive one entry in the Ranger boat giveaway for each opening round completed and can earn bonus entries into the giveaway by marshaling on days three and four.

There are still openings to be a Marshal for the Lake Seminole tournament. Full rules and details for the Marshal program, along with the link to apply, can be found at FLWFishing.com/Marshals.

Fishing Structure: 3 Tips For Targeting Offshore Bass

[print_link]

Fishing offshore for bass usually requires a boat, mapping, and good electronics in order to get dialed in on bass hangouts far from the bank.

Bass anglers relying on their electronics have found the secret ledges, drops, and humps that produced heavyweight stringers for a handful of offshore experts. Since most of their secret spots have been revealed, savvy open-water specialists try other tricks to stay ahead of the competition.
Boat positioning gives offshore experts one of their biggest advantages over the newcomers. Bank-running anglers can easily position and hold their boats within casting distance of visible shoreline targets, but structure completely surrounded by water presents more of a challenge. The ability to position in open water over or near an invisible target has become the key to success for offshore experts.

Fishing Structure: Hump It Up

LakeForkGuy-Fishing-Structure-Skeeter-Boat

Three variables that determine how to position your boat around structure like an offshore hump. They are depth, current, and water clarity. Certain humps will top out at a depth of 20 feet or less in clear water it is best to stay back off the hump then as far as you can. Determining which side of the formation to target depends on current or wind direction.

You should usually position your boat on the down-current side and cast back towards the structure.  The wind has little effect on deeper structure but does create some current on humps that rise within 6 to 8 feet of the surface, so point the nose of your boat into the wind to control it easier and cast in the same direction.

Fishing Structure: Channel Breaks And Ledges

LakeForkGuy-Fishing-Structure-Skeeter-Boat

After finding the sweet spot on a channel break or ledge with your electronics, position your boat in deep water and cast to the structure’s shallow section. Holding in deeper water allows you to stay farther away from the break and use the depth and distance to muffle any excess noise emitting from the boat that could spook fish. When current exists, position your boat on the down-current side of the structure.

Fishing Structure: Locating Roadbeds

fishing structure

Concentrate on ambush points along the roadbed, such as corners and ditches on each side of the structure. Position your boat at a 45-degree angle on either side of the roadbed–never on top of it though–and cast upwind past the structure.

Lander University Team Takes Early Lead In Bassmaster College Event On Lake Norman

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Every angler entered in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series tournament presented by Bass Pro Shops would rather the sun shine like it did Thursday afternoon on Lake Norman.

But they certainly would rather catch bass like they did Thursday morning, when slate grey skies produced periodic rainstorms, many of them heavy.

Chandlar Ellis and Gil Senn of Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., made the most of the morning bite and they lead a field of 256 duos competing on 32,000-acre Lake Norman here in the heart of the Tar Heel State.

Ellis and Senn caught five bass on Day 1 that weighed 16 pounds, 10 ounces. That total gave them more than a 2-pound edge over the remainder of the field.

The tournament is the first of four regular-season events on the 2019 Bassmaster College Series schedule.
“We pulled up this morning and on the first three casts, we had three fish,” said Senn. “That morning bite is extremely important to us. As the day wore on, the bite really slowed down. The fish were getting smaller.”

The tandem targeted largemouth bites on Lake Norman, which easily provided more spotted bass on Thursday than any other species. But Ellis caught a 4-11 largemouth that tied for the second largest catch of the day and provided the heft his team needed to grab the first-round lead.

In fact, the Lander University tandem caught four largemouth bass on Thursday to go with one spotted bass. That was the difference that provided them a 2-pound cushion heading into Day 2.

“We pulled up to a bank and were moving along it this morning,” Ellis said. “I threw once and I caught a 3-pounder. I put him in the livewell and threw right back to the same spot and caught that 4-pounder. Fishing was good for a while this morning. The sun warmed up the rocks a bit and we caught a couple that way, but it wasn’t the same as it was early.”

Senn said he and Ellis agreed during practice that a 25-pound total over two days would get a team into the group of 12 tandems that survive the cut to fish on Saturday.

The Lander University anglers are close to that mark after only one day of competition.

“The fish are replenishing really well now,” Senn said “It’s just that time of year. We caught one largemouth all week in practice,” Senn said. “It was all spots for us until today. We get in there today and it was all largemouth. Who knows? But we’ll definitely try for them again tomorrow.”

Justin Barnes and Adam Carroll of the University of Montevallo (Ala.) are in second place with 14-7. Luke Mason and Justin lane of the University of North Alabama are third with 14-4, Garrett Warren and Eric Lampkin of Snead State Community College (Ala.) are fourth with 14-2 and Chase Serafin and Jack Hippe of Adrian College (Mich.) are fifth with 13-9.

The team of Jacob Moore and Gilliam Tharpe of North Carolina State caught the big bass on Thursday – a 6-pound, 13-ounce largemouth that outweighed any other bass caught Thursday by 2 pounds. That gives the tandem an early lead for the Carhartt Big Bass of the tournament and the $500 Carhartt gift card that comes with it.

Moore said he caught the fish on, not surprisingly, an early-morning bite.

“It was exciting,” he said. “I wish we had four more like it.”

Friday’s weather looks like it will see-saw much like it has throughout the week. There’s a 60 percent chance of rain early Friday, but it dips to 25 percent by late morning. There’s a 70-percent likelihood of rain by 1 p.m., a full two hours before the first flight of anglers is due to weigh-in.

Temperatures are not expected to climb higher than 50 degrees on Friday.

The top 10 percent of teams competing on Lake Norman (26 teams in all) will automatically advance to the Carhartt Bassmaster College National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops tournament to be held at a yet to be disclosed fishery later this year.

The top dozen duos will split $8,500 in cash for their respective bass fishing teams, with a $2,500 prize going to the winning team’s school.

Ellis and Senn have the early lead on the Bass Pros Shops Big Bag of the tournament, which earns the winner a $250 Bass Pro Shops gift card.

The Bassmaster College Series tournament presented by Bass Pro Shops is sponsored by Visit Lake Norman, Mecklenberg County and the City of Charlotte.

The Day 2 launch will begin at 7 a.m. ET at Blythe Landing. Weigh-in will start at 3 p.m.

Wintertime Tactics: Is This Cheating?! by Jonathan Krause

Wintertime Tactics: Is This Cheating?!

[print_link]

In my last article I talked about some tactics that can help you catch fish in the wintertime with some general tips and tricks for this time of year. I went through a couple different lures and talked about using specific depth ranges to help maximize your time on the water just about wherever you are fishing. These are great tips but sometimes, especially this time of year, it can just be a grind to get bit, plain and simple. We have all had those days where we go out to your local lake or river and throw the tackle box at ‘em and all you’re left with at the end of the day is less gas in the tank and a runny nose. Sometimes you just need a location change.

If you have not tried it yet, you have to make a trip to a local power plant lake. With waters that are consistently warmer all year around, it enables the fish to feed more aggressively all year. A couple of weekends ago I went to Hyco Lake in North Carolina with a couple of the other guys on Liberty’s bass team. What I experienced was some of the most fun wintertime fishing I have ever had. We started off the morning dragging some jigs on an island, while the other friend threw a crankbait. We were not getting bit until I went to reel in my jig and one hit it fairly close to the boat. That immediately clued us in just a little bit. In the winter I have found it is so helpful to really listen to clues that the fish give you. Let them tell you what they want. After we caught another one swimming the jig, we switched to chatterbaits and got bit. Baitfish started busting all over the place and two and three pounders started rolling on baitfish busting less than 5 feet away. This helped us clue into what some of the fish were doing in the lake and we capitalized on it by throwing swimbaits catching over 30 bass before the sun set. It literally felt like we were cheating! You just are not supposed to catch them like that this time of year. And to bounce back to listening to clues, did I mention the water looked like chocolate milk? Our first thought was not to throw a subtle bait like a swimbait but it ended up being the most productive. Listen to the clues and try variants!

This just goes to show how productive power plant lakes can be in the winter time. Once we got clued into what the fish were doing, we found that the fish were super active and very aggressive, getting bit two or three different times in one cast. The warmer water temperatures allow the shad to have a higher survival rate and over years of this, we found the shad population to be really high and therefore the bass could stay active and feed heavier this time of year. Not to mention, a lot of times this time of year when you catch a fish out of low to mid 40 degree water, the fish won’t fight very hard whereas in a place where they just do not get that cold you can count on a harder fight. And who doesn’t like that? Give a warm water discharge power plant lake a shot this winter and see the difference!
