Toler Wins on Lake Norman

Athens, Al –  Kevin Toler of Statesville, NC won the American Fishing Tour division 14 tournament on Lake Norman in Mooresville, NC with five fish weighing 13.31 pounds held on 03/31/2018.

It was another cool start on Lake Norman with temperatures in the upper 30’s and winds out of the NNE at 5 to 10 mph, shifting to SW at 5mph about mid day.  A field of 27 anglers turned out to fish, and face tough post frontal conditions.  The anglers enjoyed sunny skies throughout the day, with temperatures topping out in the mid 60’s.  Water conditions varied throughout the lake with stained water from upper lake to mid lake, and gin clear conditions on the south end of the lake. Water temps varied from the low 50’s to low 60’s depending on where you were on the lake.

Despite tough conditions, Kevin Toler of Statesville, NC was able to put together a winning strategy. He reported starting his morning cranking and throwing a spinnerbait up the river in stained water.  He was able to bag a respectable limit by mid day, and move south to the mid lake area where he was able to upgrade his catch by throwing a jig and a wacky rigged senko around piers. Kevin earned himself $660.00 for his efforts, and valuable points towards an invite to the National Championship on Lake Hartwell in October of this year.

Our other top anglers were 2nd place, Tim Eplee of Etowah, NC with 5 fish weighing in at 12.54 pounds, worth, $404.00. 3rd place went to Richard Bradford of Hoffman, NC with 5 fish weighing in at 12.36 pounds, worth $144.00.  Richard also took big bass honors worth $135.00.  4th place went to Lance Zertuche with 5 fish weighing in at 10.42 pounds, worth $115.00..

Congratulations to our top finishers.  Division 14’s next events will be held back to back on April 14th and 15th.  The first event is on Tuckertown Lake out of Flat Creek access on Saturday, and on Sunday Badin Lake out of Circle Drive access.

B.A.S.S. Postpones Sabine River Elite Due To Unsafe Boating Conditions

B.A.S.S. Postpones Sabine River Elite Due To Unsafe Boating Conditions

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Citing recent heavy rains and high water in the Sabine River watershed, B.A.S.S. has decided to postpone the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Elite presented by Econo Lodge that had been scheduled to begin in Orange, Texas, next week.

“The safety of our anglers and others on the waters of the Sabine River system are our primary concern,” said B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon. “Weather and water conditions are expected to create potentially hazardous boating conditions, and we feel compelled to postpone the event until conditions are more favorable.”

The tournament originally was to begin Friday, April 6, and conclude Monday, April 9. As conditions began to deteriorate, Weldon told Elite Series anglers Thursday the tournament would be delayed at least one day. “We became convinced today that conditions would not improve in time for the tournament to be held in the coming days.”

The tournament will be rescheduled for another time during the 2018 Elite Series season, which concludes with the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship in September. Officials from B.A.S.S. and local host organizations in Orange will be meeting in the coming days to select a suitable date to reschedule the event.

B.A.S.S. has conducted Elite Series tournament at Orange twice before, in 2013 and 2015. Both generated tremendous crowds of spectators, including some of the best attendance figures in tournament history.

Local organizers were hoping to set new records next week and had planned concerts following the afternoon weigh-ins to further entertain bass fishing fans.

The Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC) said in a statement it has been made aware of B.A.S.S.’s decision to postpone the Bassmaster Elite Tournament on the Sabine River, based on the safety of the anglers. “As a result of this decision the Orange County River Festival will also be cancelled,” it said.

Tad McKee, Chairman of the GOACC Board, stated, “This was a hard decision, but we support B.A.S.S.’s commitment to the safety of the anglers and participants. We look forward to a rescheduled tournament in the near future.”

Pro Bass Anglers Primed for April Autism Awareness

[print_link]

Salem, Va. – March 30, 2018 –The pros on the Bassmaster Elite Series are again promoting Autism Awareness during the month of April. During their two Elite events, the anglers will be competing for the second annual Autism Angler of April award. The trophy will be comprised of the angler who finishes the highest in the two Elite events while wearing the custom Autism Awareness bracelet. The anglers will also be eligible for bonus points based on Autism social media posts, raising money for Autism charities, and other awareness efforts.
“April has become one of my favorite months of the year because it’s National Autism Awareness Month. All the hard work and momentum we are gaining for this cause is really making a difference,” John Crews explains. “Social posts and raising money for Autism are something we want to add into the Autism Angler of April award. Last year was the first trophy that Brandon won. He then went on to win an Elite and AOY trophy so I know it is good for the rest of your year too,” jokingly says John Crews.
In 2017, the Elite anglers competed for the inaugural Autism Angler of April award that was won by Brandon Palanuik, who also won the 2017 Toyota Angler of the Year award. This year, the winning angler will be awarded a one of a kind Autism trophy made by MTM Recognition and will choose the Autism charity of their choice to donate funds that are generated by sales of custom Autism Awareness bracelets. The bracelets will be available for sale at the two April BASS Elite events expo, missilebaits.com, and mylittlebuddysboat.com. The Autism bracelets will sell for $10 each and 100% of the money will go to an Autism Charity.
In order for anglers to win this year, anglers that wear the blue wristbands will be tracked by the amount of AOY points they earn in the 2 Elite events in April. The bonus points will be achieved for raising at least $50 for an Autism charity, making at least 3 Autism referenced social media posts during the month of April, and doing any other published awareness effort for Autism. Examples of awareness efforts are wearing an Autism hat on stage during weigh in, wearing a special Autism jersey, or making an appearance at an Autism school. Anglers will receive 5 additional points for each bonus.
Eli Delany, Autism activist and avid bass angler, is the president and founder of My Little Buddy’s Boat Inc., an Autism non-profit. Eli is one of the main people that has pushed the Autism flag into the forefront of bass fishing. He has worked on several efforts such as the Fishin’ With a Mission decal program. Many Elite pros have had the decal on their boat for years.
Remember that April 2 is World Autism Awareness day and April is Autism awareness month. The winner of the Autism Angler of April award will be crowned at the BASS Toyota Texas Fest at Lake Travis in Texas. Be sure to tune into each angler on social media and at the weigh ins to see where and how much they are raising and catching.
