A look back at the Augusta County Bass Jon’s Expo by Bruce Callis

Date:

Augusta Expo

I had the honor of attending the 2nd Annual Augusta County Fishing Expo and Flea Market on Saturday, March 15, 2014. I went expecting to learn a lot and have a great time, and I was not disappointed. I did not go expecting a Richmond Expo, for that has already had its beginning many years ago. And as with any dream, there is a starting point to build to the future.
The dream started last year and it was small, There were only 100 visitors who came out. But it was a learning experience and a building block. This year it tripled to over 350 visitors. In talking with Doug Fitzgerald, a lot was learned from this year’s event also. And next year should be even grander.
Now down to the meat of everything, the show itself. It offered the western part of the state a much needed place to showcase the talents of many small companies, those that make up the back bone of the revolution of the fishing industry. From handmade jigs, soft plastics, anchoring system, local tackle companies, to professional anglers, the show offered a variety of exhibits. And there were also many options for the non-angler, something for the wife and kids. And there was some delicious food available at a reasonable price. I had my first deep fried burger, and it was indeed delicious. Granted, there were a lot of flea market tables set up; it did offer a chance for a rare find.
The big draws were the professional anglers, Kris Johnson and John Hutchins, and the Tilted Kilt girls. The girls were beautiful, but the pros were amazing. I got to get a very up close and personal experience listening to them discuss the individual questions of the visitors. Each angler was given a hands on demo and have their questions answered. To me, that is what makes a good fishing expo. I can’t wait to see how big it has grown next year, and to get another deep fried burger.
