The Bass Cast Kayak Series Championship is the culmination of 7 months of grinding it out on lakes and rivers across the Commonwealth of Virginia for the dozens of anglers who participate each season. To qualify for this final event, anglers must have participated in a minimum of 4 out of our 7 events. This year’s Champion receives the regular winnings from the Championship tournament as well as the Championship pot of $525, along with a pair of sunglasses donated by Hobie Eyewear.
This event is also when we crown our Angler of the Year out of the top three points finishers of the season. The Angler of the Year receives a kayak donated by our title sponsor, Journey Outdoors.
Out of a field of over 60 anglers from this season, 19 qualified for the Championship. Out of those that qualified, 9 made the trek to Buggs Island Lake in Clarksville, VA – including our 3 Angler of the Year competitors: Adam Flint, Jonathan Graham, and Ryan Murphy.
Throughout the day, the top of the leaderboard changed several times as our anglers settled into a rhythm. For many, Buggs Island Lake/Kerr Reservoir was new fishing grounds, and, due to the distance, their practice time had been limited. All told, 36 fish were submitted for the day with only 4 anglers finding a limit.
At the end of the day, it was Ryan Murphy who claimed both the title of Champion and Angler of the Year with 71.25″, including a 19.50″ largemouth that put him ahead of the rest of the field by 6 inches. Cody Mayo took second place with 65.25″ and also won the big fish pot of $35 with his 16.50″ fish.
