MONSOOR RETAINS LEAD AFTER DAY THREE OF FLW TOUR ON POTOMAC RIVER PRESENTED BY COSTA SUNGLASSES

MONSOOR RETAINS LEAD AFTER DAY THREE OF FLW TOUR ON POTOMAC RIVER PRESENTED BY COSTA SUNGLASSES

[print_link]

MARBURY, Md. (June 17, 2017) – Yamamoto Baits pro Tom Monsoor of La Crosse, Wisconsin, brought five bass weighing 15 pounds, 5 ounces, to the scale Saturday to retain his lead at the FLW Tour on the Potomac River presented by Costa Sunglasses with a three-day cumulative of 15 bass weighing 51-9. Monsoor will begin the fourth and final day of competition with a slim 2-ounce edge over Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Florida, who improved from 15th to 2nd in after weighing a five-bass limit totaling 19-7.

Monsoor said he spent his day working through his two stretches of weed beds. He said that of the two, one has been more productive in terms of quantity of bass, while the other has been more productive in terms of the quality and size of fish.

“I started at my first spot up north and had a limit by 8:30 (a.m.),” said Monsoor, a 14-year FLW Tour veteran who is seeking his first career-win on the Tour. “After that I headed south to the big-fish area and caught two good keepers that culled. The big bites didn’t happen today, and that’s bad. I’m going to have to do something different tomorrow.”

Monsoor said he caught 12 keepers throughout the day, and that everything he weighed bit a swimjig.

“My limit turned out to be better than I thought,” said Monsoor. “I thought I only had 14 pounds.

Tomorrow I’m just going to go fishing and try to catch whatever I can – that’s all I can do,” Monsoor went on to say. “I’ll probably start at my limit-spot, but I’ll have to look at the tide. I’ve got one other spot that I haven’t been to yet that I caught a big one from in practice, but it’s not a weed bed, so I don’t trust it as much.”

The top 10 pros advancing to the final day of competition on the Potomac River are:

Svebek Resurrects His Pro Fishing Career With A Bassmaster Open Win

Svebek Resurrects His Pro Fishing Career With A Bassmaster Open Win

[print_link]

ORANGE, Texas — Carl Svebek III has been a professional angler for most of his life.

He cut his teeth fishing tournaments on Sam Rayburn Reservoir, and he went on to fish in several major series as an adult. Eight years ago, Svebek dropped out of sight. He stopped fishing professionally. He had lost his title sponsor and was going through a divorce. So he decided to give up the sport he loved to spend more time with his children who hadn’t seen much of dad while he was on the road fishing.

Svebek returned to pro angling 18 months ago. He made the biggest splash of his professional career today by winning the Bass Pro Shops Central Open on the Sabine River here on the Texas/Louisiana border. Svebek weighed a limit of five bass on Saturday that totaled 12 pounds, 3 ounces. It gave him a three-day total of 36-12, which was just enough to vault over T-Roy Broussard, who led the tournament the first two days.

Svebek, who also moved to Orange last year, was in second place heading into Saturday’s competition, and he took the hot seat with only Broussard remaining to weigh-in. The Port Arthur, Texas, resident had only 10 pounds in his sack, which sealed the win for the 50-year-old Svebek. An ecstatic Svebek leaped into the air and pumped his fist repeatedly as the hometown crowd burst into celebration.

Svebek was choked with emotion as he spoke to the crowd, and he spent at least 10 minutes hugging family and friends before breaking free to discuss his victory.

“This is absolutely a dream come true,” he said. “To be able to win this tournament in front of all these people from Orange is really special to me. I’ll never forget it.”

He won’t have much time to forget the big win. Svebek now will prepare for the final Central Open of the season which will be held on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in October. If he fishes in that tournament, he will earn a berth in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

No way he’s missing the final Central Open, he said.

“I’m fishing the Bassmaster Classic,” he marveled aloud to the large crowd who greeted him offstage. “Can you believe it?”

To get there, Svebek fished the marshes just on the Louisiana side of the Sabine River, which was about a 20-minute run downriver. He eased into an extremely dense area crowded with “just about every kind of grass you can imagine,” he said.

“There were a lot of lily pads, especially on the shorelines,” he said. “There was milfoil and hydrilla. I was in about a foot and a half of water, and it was clear. That was key; getting the clean water. There was very little tidal movement in there, and that kind of helped me.”

Svebek said his key bait for the week was a Zoom Super Fluke (bluegill color) rigged Texas-style with a Bass Pro Shops XPS EWG hook. He also put a swivel about 1 foot up the line to help keep his line from twisting on long casts he was making to open pockets inside the foliage.

“I really liked the way the bait worked with the swivel,” he said. “It sounds ridiculous, but it was just enough weight that when it hit, if I paused for a minute, it would give it time to go down. I know I caught two 4-pounders this week on the initial fall. After 12 noon, I would put on a Bass Pro Shops frog. I wouldn’t get many bites doing that, but when I got one, it was a game-changer. The 4-pounder I had today was on that frog.”

That kicker may have been the bass that pushed Svebek to the Central Open win. As he held the championship trophy aloft on Saturday, he realized just how far he had come since his return to professional angling.

“To be honest, I didn’t know where I was going a year and a half ago,” he said. “I was struggling. I was having a hard time finding a job in the oil business. And then my good friend David Jones (whose Orange-based Gopher Industrial sponsored the Central Open) called me up and offered me a job. And he gave me a chance to go fishing again. I missed it, and I’m eternally grateful for him for letting me do this again.”

Svebek won a Skeeter ZX200/Yamaha SHO200 boat and motor package worth approximately $45,000, as well as $7,893 in cash. He picked up an additional $500 by winning the Power-Pole Captains Cash Award.

Broussard seemed destined to win the Central Open after his strong start, but he finished a hard-luck second. He weighed a respectable bag on Saturday (the fifth heaviest of the 12 anglers,) but it wasn’t enough to hold off Svebek’s hard charge. Broussard did split the $750 Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award with Johnny Nguyen. Both anglers weighed a 5-5 bass, which tied for the heaviest in the tournament. Broussard also won the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for holding the Day 2 lead.

The remaining pros in the Top 12 were third, Chad Morgenthaler, 34-10; fourth, Jeff Avery, 34; fifth, Shane Cormier, 33-12; sixth, Randy Sullivan, 33-10; seventh, Josh Bertrand, 29-14; eighth, Matthew Delaney, 29-9; ninth, Trey Smith, 29-8; 10th, John Garrett, 29-2; 11th, Jonathan Simon, 28-6; and 12th, Terry Luedtke, 26-8.

Michael Soliz of Orange won the co-angler division with a three-day total of 19-2. Soliz actually tied with Jordan Burks of Joplin, Mo., for first place, but Soliz won the tiebreaker as he had a higher single-day total than Burks. Soliz won a Triton 179 TrX Mercury 115 ELPT four-stroke boat and motor package with his victory.

In the nonboater division, Burks received the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award of $250 with a 5-15 bass. Mark Powers of Platteville, Colo., received the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 in merchandise for being the Day 2 leader in the co-angler division.

The Central Open was sponsored by the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce.

Hitting the Mark By Bruce Callis June 17th 2017

The Potomac River was tough, with most anglers seeking out community holes. Bryan Thrift and Andy Morgan we’re battling hard for the Angler of the Year (AOY) title. Andy made a hard charge, but Bryan did what he needed to do to wrap up an amazing year.
Day 2 ended with Bryan having a 29 lb 12 oz bag, earning him a $10,000 paycheck and a place in history. Andy finished day 2 with 12th place and a total of 32 lbs 7 ounces, but falling just shy of his goal.
Sweating it out on the Mississippi and Potomac Rivers is putting it mildly. Bryan said that it really was nerve wrecking. But the Shelby, NC resident resident finally got to breathe. “I really should have listened to my wife,” he admitted. She had told him to relax and just go fish, if it’s meant to be, it will happen. Sound advice that we have a hard time believing during the heat of the moment.
And how do you celebrate the big moment. You go out with Scott Martin, who finished 77th with 27 lbs, and film a Scott Martin Challenge. What could be better?
Congratulations Bryan on such an amazing year! Now on to the Forrest Wood Cup!

MARBURY, Md. (June 16, 2017) – Yamamoto Baits pro Tom Monsoor of La Crosse, Wisconsin, brought a five-bass limit weighing 16 pounds, 14 ounces, to the scale Friday to grab the lead at the FLW Tour on the Potomac River presented by Costa Sunglasses. Monsoor’s two-day cumulative catch of 10 bass weighing 36-4 gives him a 1-pound, 2-ounce advantage heading into Day Three of the four-day event that features the best bass anglers from across the globe competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“I have two areas – one is about five miles north from where we takeoff, and the other is five miles south,” said Monsoor, a 14-year Tour veteran with 38 career top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “Both areas were packed with boats. Yesterday wasn’t as bad, but today there were boats everywhere.”

Monsoor said that even with the heavy boat traffic he was still able to dial in on productive stretches of water.

“The stretches I’m hitting aren’t very big,” said Monsoor. “One is between 150 and 200 feet, and the other is about 100 yards, and they both have nice, clean weeds.”

The Wisconsin pro said he utilized a swimjig throughout his day, and was able to put 10 keepers in the boat.

“I had a limit by 8 (a.m.) and I culled four of them,” said Monsoor. “After noon I left the two areas alone. I figured I had a decent bag and wanted to let them rest. Hopefully I can get the spots to myself tomorrow.”

Broussard Maintains Lead On Day 2 Of Central Open At Sabine River

[print_link]

ORANGE, Texas — T-Roy Broussard hunts alligators for a living.

On Saturday, he’ll hunt for an even more elusive prize — a berth in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Broussard, who lives 30 minutes away in Port Arthur, Texas, maintained his lead on Friday at the Bass Pro Shops Central Open No. 2 on the Sabine River. Broussard weighed a limit of 11 pounds, 1 ounce, and coupled with his big bag of 15 pounds from Thursday, he now has a two-day total of 26-1. While that’s less than a 1 1/2-pound advantage on his closest competitor, it’s a decent margin given the low weights presented through two days of fishing.

Broussard, who stars on the History Channel television show “Swamp People,” said he’ll swing for the fences if he has to on the final day of the Central Open. He’s knows a chance to fish in the 2018 Classic next March on Lake Hartwell, South Carolina, is on the line.

“I’ll keep doing what I’ve been doing,” Broussard said. “I’ve got confidence in the places I’ve been going, but I’ve got another place I haven’t been to yet where I think I can catch some big bass. I’m going to go out there and knock them out.”

For the second consecutive day, Broussard said he narrowly missed at least one sizable bass that would have pushed his weight considerably higher.

“I lost a 2- and 4-pounder in the same spot I caught the 5-pounder yesterday,” he said. “There are some good bass in there, and I have to go get them. I can’t sit back and wait for someone to catch me. I’ve got to go out and win it.”

Broussard already did get a win — he won the Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader Award of $250 for being in first place after Friday. Now he’ll aim for a much bigger prize on the final day of competition.

Light bags were the norm again on the second day of the Central Open, but there may be relief for the 12 surviving pros and the dozen co-anglers who made the cut. Many anglers reported that the water level dropped on Sabine much of Friday, which means that areas upriver (which have been largely unfishable because the river has spilled its banks north of Orange) could come into play on Saturday. And just about every angler has said the key to good bites, regardless of where they are fishing this week, is moving water.

If the weights do get heavier on Saturday, it could be a wild finish. The Top 12 pros are separated by just more than 5 pounds, so one chunky bass in the livewell could shake up the leaderboard in a hurry.

Carl Svebek III of Orange, Texas, is hot on Broussard’s heels with a two-day total of 24-9. He weighed a limit of 12-14 on Friday, including a pair of 4-pounders. Svebek, who only began fishing again competitively last year after being out of the sport since 2010, said he’d like nothing more than to do well again in front of a hometown crowd.

“I’ve fished a lot of tournaments,” Svebek said. “I feel like this is my second chance. I’ve had a lot of hardships, but I’ve bounced back. If you would have told me eight years ago I would have be fishing a Bassmaster Open with a chance to win this thing and fish in the Classic, I’d say you were crazy. So I have just to go out and do my best. I’m excited about my chances.”

Randy Sullivan of Breckenridge, Texas, moved into third place on Friday by virtue of a limit that weighed 13-3, which gave him a two-day total of 24-2. Sullivan said Sabine fished much better for him on Day 2, given the falling water throughout the system.

“It’s definitely fishing better and better out there where I am,” Sullivan said. “The water is dropping, and it’s giving me more of an opportunity. I left my spots alone after a while, and went looking for a big one in community water.”

Sullivan said one of his primary areas holds both clean and dirty water, which shows how fickle Sabine has been this week.

“In one spot I’m doing one thing and literally two feet away, I’m doing something else,” he said. “It’s two completely different presentations. It’s wild.”

Mark Powers of Platteville, Colorado, leads the co-angler field with a two-day total of 14-4. Co-anglers have a three-bass limit each day.

Only the Top 12 pro anglers and Top 12 co-anglers will compete on the final day of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open No. 2 beginning with takeoff at 6 a.m. CT from the Orange Boat Ramp. A drive-through weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. The Orange River Festival also is taking place at the park adjacent to the boat ramp on Saturday with food vendors, Midway rides, games, informational and sponsor booths, and live music.

The event is hosted by the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce.

New Jersey Angler Wins B.A.S.S. Nation Regional On Upper Chesapeake

NORTH EAST, Md. — The home field advantage helped Michael Sentore of Gloucester City, N.J., win the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional presented by Magellan on the Upper Chesapeake Bay with a three-day tally of 59 pounds, 7 ounces.

A home field advantage is often a curse in a bass tournament because an angler can fall into the trap of fishing places where he caught bass in the past instead of finding where they are at the present moment. Sentore, who works in the commercial water treatment industry, easily avoided the curse to claim the $6,200 top prize.

Sentore said that he fishes the Upper Chesapeake every weekend and was able to run to various places during the tournament that he knew were holding bass. He also knew how to take advantage of the tidal fluctuation.

“My basic pattern was to run up the North East River in the morning and fish docks and wood cover on low tide,” Sentore said. “When the tide came in later in the day, I fished grass flats in the bay.”

Sentore’s pattern grew stronger every day. He caught seven bass on the first day of the tournament, twice that many on the second day and 20 bass today.

When Sentore fished docks and wood cover, he flipped a 1/2-ounce Riot Instigator Jig dressed with a Riot Tantrum soft plastic trailer. On the grass flats a 1/2-ounce Riot Recon Bladed Jig dressed with a Riot Streaker swimbait did the trick.

Tim Carini of Marietta, Ga., claimed second place in the boater division with 55-13 and earned $5,000. He brought in five-bass limits of more than 20 pounds on the first and third day of the tournament, but managed only four bass on the second day. Carini caught his bass on shallow grass flats with a 5-inch Big Easy Swimbait Texas rigged on a hook that had a 1/8-ounce weight molded to it.

“I didn’t fish my spot right yesterday,” Carini said. “I didn’t compensate for the east wind.”

Third place and $4,000 went to Rick Hamer of Charleston, W.Va., for his tally of 52-6. Hamer advanced to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship last year as a nonboater. He does so this year as a boater.

Will Smith of Moncks Corner, S.C., collected $3,100 for winning the nonboater division. He said he had to fish differently every day because each of his three boater partners took him to different types of bass water.

Sentore caught the biggest bass brought in by a boater. It weighed 5-15 and earned him the $500 Big Bass Award. The nonboater Big Bass Award of $250 went to Kevin Combs of Addison, Vt., for a 6-6 largemouth he caught on a Missile Baits D Stroyer flipping bait.

The Top 35 boaters and nonboaters who qualified to fish today from the previous two days of competition also received cash prizes. Seventeen eastern states and the province of Ontario brought teams to the tournament. The teams competed to win top state honors while each angler hoped to qualify for the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan.

Today the top boater and nonboater from each state and the province of Ontario received an invitation to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, which takes place at Lake Hartwell, South Carolina, on Oct. 19-21.

“At the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, these anglers have an opportunity to qualify for the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, as well as the professional Bassmaster Elite Series,” said B.A.S.S. Nation Tournament Director Jon Stewart. “It’s what dreams are made of.”

20 Things to Inspect before Buying a Used Bass Boat

Walker Smith

June 13,2017

Before you pull the trigger on that new-to-you bass fishing boat, make sure you check these critical components.

Jumping the gun on a used bass boat purchase can be a precarious endeavor. It’s tempting to pull the trigger on the first good deal you run across, but if you’re not careful, it can quickly turn into thousands of dollars in repairs and very little time on the water. It’s hard to catch bass when your boat is constantly in the shop.

I’ve been there. I’ve been the guy who had to show up at 4:00am before a tournament just to make sure my old boat would crank. It’s not fun and I want to help you learn from my mistakes.

Wired2Fish president Terry Brown and I teamed up to make a quick checklist you can bring with you the next time you go boat shopping. TB is the man I turn to when I have any mechanical issues and his decades of experience make him an incredible resource on this subject.
