Hartman Maintains Lead At Toledo Bend Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament

MANY, La. — For three days, Jamie Hartman has made southern fishing look easy.

Now, he needs one more good day to make his dreams come true.

The New York resident, who has readily admitted that he isn’t familiar with the patterns and practices observed by bass that live in the lakes of the South, caught five Saturday that weighed 17 pounds, 14 ounces to push his three-day total to 56-15 in the Bassmaster Elite at Toledo Bend presented by Econo Lodge.

He will lead the remaining 12 anglers into Championship Sunday with a chance to earn $100,000 and his first B.A.S.S. victory.

“I’m absolutely, 100 percent pleased with the way things went today,” said Hartman, who caught 23-5 and 15-12 the first two days of the tournament. “I’m just winging it, piecing things together, but it’s all working out so far.”

Hartman said he came to Toledo Bend this week expecting the spawn to be over. But when he realized it was still in full swing, he adjusted and turned his attention to spawn and prespawn fish.

They were his target again Saturday.

“I caught three fish on beds today,” said Hartman, an Elite Series rookie fishing only his 13th B.A.S.S. event. “Then after that, the shallow stuff was over. I caught my next 12 fish in 32 feet of water. Those fish in deep water were all prespawn fish — big and fat.”

Hartman’s first fish of the day was a 6-5 largemouth that bit four times before he finally got a good hookset.

“I missed that fish three times,” Hartman said. “Then I finally just let the fish eat it and waited for my line to start going off. I was thankful for that fourth bite.”

Hartman’s closest competition heading into the final round is South Carolina angler and former Bassmaster Classic champion Casey Ashley, who is in second place with 53-3. The remainder of the Top 12 is as follows: John Murray (third, 52-11), Jason Christie (fourth, 52-10), Brandon Palaniuk (fifth, 50-9), Alton Jones (sixth, 49-14), Matt Lee (seventh, 48-10), Jacob Wheeler (eighth, 47-11), Todd Faircloth (ninth, 47-9), Brett Hite (10th, 47-1), Randy Howell (11th, 47-0) and Andy Montgomery (12th, 46-14).

Ashley made a late surge Saturday and finished with 16-7. He exploited the ongoing shad spawn to catch some shallow fish early, but he culled most of those as the day went on.

“My best fish seem to bite a little better later in the day,” Ashley said. “I actually caught four fish early on a spinnerbait, but they were all small. I don’t know what those big ones are doing early.”

Ashley’s solid results on Day 3 helped him rise from fifth place into second, but the biggest mover in the field during the semifinal round was Murray.

The West Coast native, who recently moved to Tennessee, caught 23-7 to jump from 34th place into third. He said simple execution was the key to finally making things work after a tough week.

“I’ve been on a pattern for big bites all week, and I’ve had a hard time boating them,” Murray said. “Today, I just finally got them in the boat.”

Murray said he would reveal the specifics of his methods Sunday. But for now, he only said it’s a technique he has used often on Elephant Butte Reservoir in New Mexico.

“There’s too many good guys on our tour to reveal that kind of information today,” Murray said. “But Skeet Reese, Brent Ehrler and I figured out a little something.

“You don’t get a lot of bites doing it. It’s not a deal where you go out there and catch 20, but it’ll catch the big ones.”

Murray’s two biggest fish Saturday weighed 7-10 and 6-12. Christie still leads the race for Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the week with a 9-10 largemouth.

The tournament will conclude Sunday with the remaining anglers taking off from Cypress Bend Park at 6:45 a.m. CT. The final weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3 p.m.

The event is hosted by Toledo Bend Lake Country.

Arkansas’ Clark Wins Co-angler Title, $20,100

SOMERSET, Ky. (April 7, 2017) – Pro Clark Wendlandt of Leander, Texas, grabbed the lead Friday at the FLW Tour at Lake Cumberland presented by T-H Marine after bringing a five-bass limit weighing 16 pounds, 15 ounces to the scale. Wendlandt’s two-day cumulative catch of 10 bass totaling 35 pounds, 6 ounces, is enough to give him a thin 2-ounce advantage heading into day three of the four-day event that features 164 of the world’s premier bass anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

Wendlandt said he spent his day targeting both smallmouth and largemouth bass in main-river creeks. He said he worked through the same area on day one, and bounced back and forth between the two species to craft his limit.

“I caught a lot of fish today, but they were smaller,” said Wendlandt, a 21-year Tour veteran and 3-time FLW Angler of the Year winner. “Usually I get more largemouth the farther back I go, and more smallmouth toward the mouths of the creeks or the fronts. But today, it started mixing up. I caught my biggest largemouth of the day today from a place that looked good for smallmouth and vice versa. It’s pretty intriguing.

“I think sight-fishing may play a role toward the end of this tournament as well,” continued Wendlandt. “I know where about 20 largemouth are on beds, but I haven’t gone to any of them. It just hasn’t made sense for me to focus on them yet.”

Wendlandt said that Lake Cumberland’s expansive layout is working to his advantage.

“This lake is intriguing because it’s big and boats don’t dictate what you do, fish do,” said Wendlandt. “I saw other boats today, but they didn’t affect me. I wish every tournament was like this.”

For day three, Wendlandt said he may sift through some new locations but doesn’t have anything specific he needs to target.

“I don’t even know exactly where I’m going to start tomorrow,” said Wendlandt. “I’m just going to fish what feels good at the time. I’m going to run, and the first place that looks good I’m going to pull in and fish.”

Todd Auten of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, earned the Big Bass award on the pro side Friday, weighing a 6-pound, 4-ounce fish to win the $500 prize.

Overall there were 609 bass weighing 1,503 pounds, 2 ounces caught by 153 pros Friday. The catch included 88 five-bass limits.

Jeff Clark of Fort Smith, Arkansas, won the Co-angler Division and $20,100 Friday with a two-day total of eight bass weighing 20 pounds, 1 ounce, followed by Frank Divis Sr. of Farmington, Arkansas, who finished in second place with six bass weighing 19 pounds, 8 ounces, worth $7,550.

Richie Eaves of Nauvoo, Illinois, earned $250 for the Big Bass award in the Co-angler Division Friday with a 6-pound, 2-ounce bass.

Overall there were 224 bass weighing 455 pounds, 15 ounces caught by 109 co-anglers Friday. The catch included 7 five-bass limits.

In FLW Tour competition, pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day, with pros supplying the boat, controlling boat movement and competing against other pros. Co-anglers fish from the back deck against other co-anglers. The full field competes in the two-day opening round. Co-angler competition concludes following Friday’s weigh-in, while the top 20 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2017 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Lake Murray in Columbia, South Carolina, Aug. 11-13.

The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Cumberland presented by T-H Marine is more than $800,000, including $10,000 through 50^th place in the Pro Division. The event is hosted by the Somerset Tourist and Convention Commission.

Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. EDT each day from General Burnside Island State Park, located at 8801 S. Highway 27, in Burnside, Kentucky. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins will also be held at General Burnside Island State Park, beginning at 4 p.m.

Prior to the weigh-ins Saturday and Sunday, fans are encouraged to experience the free Family Fishing Expo at General Burnside Island State Park from noon to 4 p.m. The Expo is a unique opportunity for fishing fans to meet their favorite anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.

Youth are also invited to participate in the free FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby at the Ruckel’s Restaurant Pay Lake, located at 192 KY-70 in Eubank, Kentucky, on Saturday, April 8, from 9-11 a.m. The event, hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, is free and open to area youth 18 years of age and younger and Special Olympics athletes. Rods and reels are available for the first 50 participants to use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one.

Missouri Angler Wins B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional Bass Tournament

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — The host state continued its dominance of the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors at Lake of the Ozarks with Missouri angler Beau Govreau winning the tournament overall title today.

A day after the Missouri B.A.S.S. Nation state team won the team competition of the tournament, Govreau of Cedar Hill, Mo., was crowned the overall champion of the tournament with a three-day catch of 15 bass weighing 64 pounds, 11 ounces. The 36-year-old contractor took over the lead on Thursday by catching a five-bass limit weighing 21-13 and followed up today with a 22-15 limit to win the championship and finish as Missouri’s top angler in the boater division.

The Regional featured 20-angler teams from 19 states competing for top state honors and berths to the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors. The highest finishing boater and non-boater from each state qualified for the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

“My practice went really well up the (Osage) river,” Govreau said. “I know from experience on this lake that they don’t usually bite as well up there when it is windy, rainy and cloudy. My game plan was to run up (the Osage arm) and catch them the first day but the weather didn’t let me do it.”

Weather on the first day included clouds, rain and wind and caused Govreau to change his plans and stay close to the takeoff site. He managed to catch a limit weighing 19-15 the first day. “The second day I started close again because I caught them the first day.”

After catching a good-sized bass downlake on Thursday, Govreau decided to run up the river where he caught three keepers, but it didn’t feel right to him. The Lake St. Louis Bassmasters club member ran back down lake and caught two bigger bass at the end of the day.

Today’s bluebird skies and calm weather prompted Govreau to run back up the river and stay there. “The sunny, calm weather put the fish where I could get to them; everything worked out,” he said.

Govreau caught two heavy bass on a white-and-chartreuse 3/4-ounce ChatterBait, but most of his fish each day were taken on either a watermelon candy football jig (7/16 or 9/16 ounce) with a watermelon candy plastic craw or a 1/2-ounce shaky jighead with a beaver-style bait.

A slow presentation was the key to triggering strikes. “The water is still pretty chilly so most of my retrieves were pretty slow,” he said.

The Missouri angler caught bass ranging from 1 1/2 to 16-feet deep along a variety of banks. For the shallow fish he keyed on any concrete or wood cover he could find. “The fish were in different areas every day and I had to figure them out,” he said. “But once I figured them out they were all in the same type of spot.”

Paired with Govreau today, Frank Mixon of Abilene, Texas caught a three-bass limit weighing 10-14 to win the non-boater division. He finished with a three-day total of nine bass weighing 35-2.

The Big Bass Award of $500 in the boater division went to Ty Bowman, Mountain Home, Ark., with a 7-5 largemouth. Eddie Charleton of Alma, Ill., received the Big Bass Award of $250 in the non-boater division for catching a 7-2 largemouth.

MANY, La. — Where Jamie Hartman comes from, the largemouth bass spawn only lasts about two weeks.

So, when the New York resident pre-fished Toledo Bend Reservoir back in February and saw lots of bass already on the beds, he just assumed the spawn would be long done by the time he returned for this week’s Bassmaster Elite at Toledo Bend presented by Econo Lodge.

He was wrong, but he wasn’t too stubborn to admit it.

After starting the week in deeper water, Hartman adjusted and has put together a two-day total of 39 pounds, 1 ounce to lead the event. While much of the 110-angler field struggled during post-front conditions Friday, Hartman caught a five-bass limit that weighed 15-12.

“I had a terrible, terrible practice this week,” Hartman said. “I’m not familiar with these southern waters, where the spawn just lasts for months, obviously.

“I pre-fished here for 2 1/2 weeks in February and saw two big waves of fish go in and out. I spent all of that time graphing deeper spots where I thought postspawn fish would be, and it just hasn’t happened yet.”

When Hartman realized this week that the fish weren’t positioned as he expected, he said he started gradually moving shallower until he found the transition areas that are holding prespawn bass.

He caught an impressive five-bass limit that weighed 23-5 during Thursday’s opening round and then survived Friday’s downturn well.

“All I could catch on those places I graphed were small fish,” Hartman said. “I moved in and started catching bigger ones. I don’t think I’ve caught a fish that has spawned since the tournament started. Every one I’ve caught has been big and fat.”

Hartman said he caught about 10 keepers Friday — and that was enough to put the Elite Series rookie on top of a leaderboard that includes veterans like James Elam (second, 38-8), Todd Faircloth (third, 37-14), Brett Hite (fourth, 37-13) and Casey Ashley (fifth, 36-12).

Elam also came to Toledo Bend expecting to catch postspawn bass after catching so many postspawn fish on Lake Conroe during the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods two weeks ago.

Unlike Hartman, he said he’s been able to stick with his strategy. But the bites have been few and far between.

“Size-wise, I caught some good fish today, but I didn’t get a whole bunch of bites,” said Elam, who weighed in 22-10 Friday. “Yesterday, I had a lot of fish that would bite the bait and miss it. But late in the day, I found a bait they would eat.

“Today, I had three 5-pounders, and I just caught those randomly. They were the only good fish I caught from those areas.”

Faircloth, who caught 20-2 Thursday, saw his weight dip slightly to 17-12 Friday. But he said he still caught fish on three baits, fishing three distinct types of cover.

“I’m fishing shallow, deep and in between — and catching fish in all of those places,” he said. “I think that really tells you just how good this lake is. When you can do that consistently, it’s a real testimony to the fishery.”

After catching 24-11 Thursday — good enough for second place on Day 1 — Hite saw his weight cut nearly in half during Friday’s harsh post-front conditions. He brought only 13-2 to the scales Friday, but fell just two spots to fourth.

“I caught just as many fish today,” Hite said. “I executed on every fish that bit, but I never had one of those big bites that you need here.”

Hite said he expected the day to be tougher, judging by the weather forecast.

“The second day after a front is usually the toughest one,” Hite said. “It should get better as the week goes along, but the boat traffic will also increase as we get into the weekend.”

Texas angler Kelly Jordon weighed in the biggest bass of the day, a 7-13 largemouth, but Jason Christie’s 9-10 largemouth from Thursday has him in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the week.

The tournament will continue Saturday, with the Top 51 remaining anglers taking off from Cypress Bend Park at 6:45 a.m. CT. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3 p.m., with only the Top 12 anglers advancing to Championship Sunday for a chance to win a $100,000 first-place prize.

The event is hosted by Toledo Bend Lake Country.

Legendary sight fisherman Shaw Grigsby shares three tips that will help you combat abrupt weather changes when fishing for spawning bass.

It’d be difficult to dispute that any angler in the history of pro fishing has cashed more paychecks from catching spawning bass than Shaw Grigsby. He’s won nine B.A.S.S. events and nearly all of those victories were related to sight fishing for fat spawners.

So perhaps it’s the confidence derived from 30 years of sight fishing success that found him unrattled to begin the Elite Series event on Toledo Bend—despite weather that shifted from light winds and warm sunshine during practice—to a break-out-the-jackets cold front with temps in the 40s at the start of competition.

If a 25-degree dip in temperature wasn’t enough to rattle the nerves of less experienced anglers, how about the raging northwest winds that had been blowing during the night to muddy-up the shallow waters Shaw may have planned on fishing?

Still, no worries. Grigsby’s got a plan. And we can all learn something from it.

Ryan Harrell of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Virginia division tournament held 4/01/2017 on Lake Gaston.

Running out of Americamps in Bracey Virginia, Ryan caught five bass weighing 20.94 pounds including a big bass that weighed 6.87 pounds. For the Boater Division victory, Harrell took home a check for $5,000 for the win and an additional $650 for the boater big bass. Also for having the biggest bass of the tournament Harrell walked away with a new Abu Garcia Revo SX spinning reel valued at $160.

“I caught my fish off of docks with a jig,” said Harrell.

In second for the boaters, Brian Calloway of Danville, Virginia landed a five bass tournament limit going 17.91 pounds. He collected $1,250 for the effort.

“I caught my fish today off of docks with a jig,” said Calloway.

JT Palmore of Blackstone, Virginia took third for the boaters with five bass weighing 16.54 pounds. His limit earned him $900.

“I caught my fish today on a spinnerbait,” said Palmore.

Finishing fourth, Ray Griffin of Greensboro, North Carolina landed a five bass limit for 16.07 pounds.
Bo Grosvenor of Forest, Virginia rounded out the top five with five bass weighing 15.54 pounds.

In the Co-Angler division, Derek Sewell of Forest, Virginia won with three bass weighing 10.69 pounds. He sealed his victory with a 4.08 pound kicker to pocket a check for $850.

“It was a pretty slow day. I had five bites but they were the right ones. My fish came off a jig,” said Sewell.

Taking second for the co-anglers, Robert Green from Sedalia, North Carolina brought in a three-bass division limit weighing 7.24 pounds. Robert anchored his catch with a 4.12 pound bass. He collected $250 and an additional $105 for the co-angler big bass.

“I caught my fish today off a black and blue jig,” said Green.

Greg Dawson of Rustburg, Virginia placed third among the co-anglers with three bass weighing 6.32 pounds. He earned $200 for his catch.

“I caught my fish today on a shakey head with a green pumpkin trick worm around docks,” said Dawson.

In fourth place among the co-anglers, Tim Gardner of Greensboro, North Carolina weighed in three bass weighing 5.74 pounds.

Randy Ruffin of Norfolk, Virginia finished in fifth place with three bass at 4.78 pounds.

Slated for 4/22/2017 the next divisional tournament will be held on Kerr Lake out of Nutbush Park near Henderson North Carolina. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2018 Ray Scott Championship, slated for the Red River in Shreveport-Bossier Louisiana in April 2018.

MANY, La. — For the second time in three tournaments this season, Jacob Wheeler is sitting atop the leaderboard.

The Indiana pro caught five bass that weighed 25 pounds, 1 ounce during Thursday’s first round of the Bassmaster Elite at Toledo Bend presented by Econo Lodge.

Wheeler, who won the season’s first Elite Series event on Tennessee’s Cherokee Lake in February, leads Arizona pro Brett Hite (24-11) by 6 ounces. But the field has three days left to fish on a lake that has topped the list of Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes the last two years.

“I don’t have much experience here, which might have helped me a little bit or might have hurt me,” said Wheeler, who made the move to the Elite Series this year after a successful career on the FLW Tour. “I spent two days here in the fall one time, five or six days in pre-practice and then practice this week — and that’s it.

“But I know there are a lot of big fish here, and everything worked out for me today.”

With so much fishing left to do, Wheeler was tightlipped about how he caught his fish Thursday. He only said that he managed to catch a few good fish early to calm his nerves.

He said things could change on the 180,000-acre fishery as the week goes by, and the key to winning will be rolling with those changes.

“I think the biggest thing right now is to keep an open mind,” Wheeler said. “I really don’t know how I’m going to fish tomorrow. I’ve got to run around, fly by the seat of my pants, fish a few areas that look good. I’m definitely going to mix it up.”

Many big largemouth bass are spawning on Toledo Bend. But the winds blew 15 to 20 mph Thursday, making it hard for some anglers to spot those bass in shallow water.

Like Wheeler, Hite didn’t say how he was fishing. But he said the wind didn’t hurt him at all.

“Where I’m fishing, I didn’t have the big waves,” Hite said. “A little breeze never hurts when you’re trying to get them to bite.

“Dead-slick calm, post-front conditions would have probably been just right for the sight fishermen. But for what I’m doing, a little breeze always helps.”

Hite said he started his day in the area where he had the most bites during practice, and it proved to be a good decision. One of his first fish was largemouth that weighed 7 1/2 pounds.

“I caught that big fish and had a limit that weighed probably 18 or 19 pounds and moved out of there,” Hite said. “I made a little switch-up and caught a couple of big ones later in the afternoon. That definitely keyed me in on some stuff and how to fish it.”

Toledo Bend didn’t show out from top to bottom Thursday, but the Top 7 anglers all had at least 20 pounds. Behind Wheeler and Hite were Jamie Hartman (23-5), Jason Christie (21-5), Steve Kennedy (20-8), Todd Faircloth (20-2) and Matt Lee (20-0).

Christie’s bag was anchored by a 9-10 largemouth that gave him the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the week.

“That’s the third-biggest fish I’ve ever caught in a tournament,” Christie said. “I went to a place just thinking I could catch a limit fishing the shad spawn and caught that fish. I just went in there hoping to catch five, and I caught that one.

“It kind of helped the stringer a little bit.”

Christie said he actually needed to sit for a moment and collect his thoughts after landing the big bass.

“When I hooked it I thought it was a 5-pounder,” Christie said. “Then it came up and kind of wallowed and I thought maybe it was a 7-pounder. Then it came by the boat, and I knew it was a giant.

“Luckily, it was hooked good.”

The tournament will continue Friday with takeoff scheduled for 6:45 a.m. CT from Cypress Bend Park. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3:15 p.m., with only the Top 51 anglers moving on to Saturday’s semifinal round.

The event is hosted by Toledo Bend Lake Country.

Missouri Rallies To Win Nation Central Regional

The Missouri B.A.S.S. Nation wins the team competition Thursday with 346 pounds at the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Divisional presented by Magellan on Lake of the Ozarks. Beau Govreau of Missouri is leading the individual competition with a two-day total weight of 41 pounds, 12 ounces.

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — Missouri cashed in on its home-waters advantage to win the state competition of the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Trailing Kentucky by more than 9 pounds at the beginning of the day, the 20-angler Missouri team rallied to collectively catch 346 pounds of bass to take first place and win a Triton 189TRX bass boat, trailer and Yamaha VF150LA outboard motor worth $38,000. Arkansas finished second with 305-8 and Kentucky dropped to third place with 304-2.

“We had an outstanding group of fishermen,” said Missouri team captain John Blankenbeker. “We had a state team that really came together.”

Missouri dominated the boater standings with three anglers in the Top 5. Beau Govreau of Cedar Hill, Mo., leads the division with 41-12, followed by Mark Wiese Jr., High Ridge, Mo., in second place, 39-12; and Marcus Sykora, Osage Beach, Mo., in fourth place with 35-13.

The team included three anglers who live in the lake area: Sykora, Brian Maloney, Osage Beach, Mo., and Harold Stark, Eldon, Mo.

“That makes a big difference so they were able to put together some things,” Blankenbeker said. “The guys who don’t live religiously on this lake did well also. They were just a group of guys who discussed how and what they were catching fish on, and they worked together.”

Fishing in his first regional, Govreau took the lead today in the boater division with a five-bass limit weighing 21-13. “I didn’t have as many keepers as yesterday but I had just a little bit better fish today,” the Lake St. Louis Bassmasters club member said. “It was a grind.”

Govreau said he caught his fish sporadically throughout the day. “I would get a bite and catch a good one, and then I would go a few hours and weed through some little ones,” said Govreau. “Then I would catch another good one. At the end of the day, with about 40 minutes left, I caught one of the biggest ones (over 5 pounds).”

The 36-year-old contractor said he tacked about 100 miles on his boat to catch his fish today. “I caught them from one end of the lake to the other,” he said.

By moving into first place today, Govreau earned the Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader Award of $250 in the boater division. Frank Mixon of Abilene, Texas, collected the Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader Award of $250 in merchandise by moving into first place in the co-angler division with 24-4.

The regional features 20-angler teams from 19 states competing for top state honors and berths to the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan. The Top 38 anglers and each state’s Top 3 boaters and co-anglers will compete on the final day. The top boater and non-boater from each state will qualify for the national championship.

The final weigh-in on Friday will begin at 2:30 p.m. CT at the Lake of the Ozarks Grand Glaize State Park Public Beach No. 2.

The event is hosted by the Tri-County Lodging Association.
