University Of South Carolina Team Moves To The Top At Bassmaster College Southern Regional

[print_link]

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Patrick Walters and Tyler All of the University of South Carolina stayed consistent and caught 13 pounds, 12 ounces to take the lead at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops at Winyah Bay, bringing a total weight of 27-3 on Friday.

Some adverse conditions were presented to the full field of anglers as the temperature dropped 30 degrees overnight. The strong north wind that was present on Thursday blew in a cold front, and teams had to adjust on the fly Friday.

The Summerville, S.C., anglers used their local knowledge to the fullest as they capitalized on their area and brought another 13 pounds to the weigh-in scales. Even with the change in weather, they stuck to their plan and executed.

“Everything went as planned today,” Walters said. “Consistency pays the bills. If you’re fluctuating weights day-to-day, then you probably aren’t in contention to win.”

With water temperatures in the 60s, and bass thinking about spawning, the last thing anglers want is a cold front that may stall the bite and reposition the bass. The 35-degree air temperature seemed to impact the anglers more than the bass, but another night of cold temperatures could tell the fish to move from their staging areas.

“The fish weren’t as active as they were Thursday,” Walters said. “We had a chance at a bigger bag yesterday and didn’t make it happen. We are interested to see how the weather changes things, but if I had to fish an area for a 5-pounder on Winyah Bay it would be the area we are in for sure.”

The former college champion is cautiously optimistic, but nothing is a given on Winyah Bay where consistency isn’t the easiest thing to duplicate. They take a 1-4 lead into the final day over the Coastal Carolina teammates Jonathan Kelley and Max McQuaide.

Kelley and McQuaide jumped from sixth into second place because they brought the biggest bag to the scales on Friday. Their 14-12 weight vaulted them up the leaderboard and put them in contention to not only qualify for the Carhartt Bassmastr National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, but to also contend for a title on Saturday.

The Coastal Carolina duo desperately needed sunshine on Thursday and the windy, cloudy conditions didn’t do them any favors, but with a full day of sunshine they put together the second-biggest limit of the week.

“It didn’t come easy at first,” Kelley said. “We had to change up and fish slower with a worm until we solidified our limit.”

“We’ve been getting plenty of bites,” McQuaide said. “Today we got the right bites, and we have to hope to hook into a giant tomorrow.”

Slowing down paid off for Kelley and McQuaide, but they also found a “magic tree” that they relied on for a lot of their success on Friday.

“We found this tree, and we caught four fish off it,” Kelley said. “Three of those fish were our biggest today.”

They passed their teammates John Duarte and Chesley Alford who were the Day 1 leaders. They now go from the hunted to the hunters as they dropped to third. The duo caught 10-2 on Friday, but feel like they are dwindling their population of fish and they aren’t reloading, so they plan to make a big change in areas for Saturday’s final day.

The gap between the Top 3 and the rest of the field is significant as Armando Ortiz and Dylan McKee of Auburn University are in fourth place with 22-14, almost a full 3 pounds behind third place. Cody Stahl and Daniel Kennedy of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia sit in fifth with 21-7.

The full field is now cut to the Top 20 and the surviving teams will fish one more day on Winyah Bay in hopes of jumping into the Top 13 to qualify for the National Championship, which will be held this summer and announced at a later date.

Jarrett Brown and Porter James of the University of Montevallo in Alabama are on the Top 13 bubble, and the bottom seven teams are within a pound and a half of the final qualifying spot so the final day should be interesting.

Takeoff will happen at 6:30 a.m. ET at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex, which is located at 101 River Walk Drive, Georgetown, S.C. 29440. Weigh-in will now shift to Downtown Georgetown and will be held at 729 Front St. Georgetown, S.C. at 3:30 p.m.

Tackle Talk: Lucky Craft Staysee 90SP Ver. 2 Jerkbait

Tackle Talk: Lucky Craft Staysee 90SP Ver. 2 Jerkbait

Walker Smith

February 28,2017

This jerkbait has an aggressive action and casts like a bullet, even in heavy winds.

The jerkbait bite has been good to me this winter, so I took the opportunity to test a bunch of different ones over the last few months. Throughout my constant experimentation, the Lucky Craft Staysee 90SP Version 2 consistently stood out as a big-time performer.

I think there are several important design aspects to consider with this particular jerkbait.

Stumpf Stocks Up On Table Rock Bass

[print_link]

BRANSON, Mo. — Ernie Stumpf had a day of firsts in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open at Table Rock Lake.

Fishing for the first time on Table Rock in his first ever Bassmaster Opens tournament, Stumpf moved into first place in the pro division with a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds. The 3M regional salesman has traversed in a roundabout way to fish in his first B.A.S.S. event. “I am originally from California, then lived in Las Vegas for nine years and then moved out to Texas about three years ago,” he said. “We didn’t have any B.A.S.S. events at the time out there, and I didn’t make any trips out of the state then.”

The 44-year-old angler from Frisco, Texas, signed up to fish the Central Opens last year but was too far down on the waiting list to get the call. This year he signed up early and made the roster.

Stumpf said he had mixed results while practicing for his first Open. “I had some days when I was wondering what the heck to do out here, and then I had a couple of days when I caught some good ones (including a bass in the 7-pound range),” he said.

Fishing all the spots he had found in practice, Stumpf eventually caught his limit by about 3:50 p.m. today. His final stop produced a 6-1 largemouth that put him in the lead for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award. “I just happened to be at the right place at the right time,” Stumpf said of his big catch.

Kimberling City, Mo., angler Tom Statler relied on his extensive experience on his home waters of Table Rock to move into second place in the pro division with a 16-10 limit. The Championship Marine Repair shop owner also had inconsistent practice days. “Monday was awful,” he said. “Tuesday was pretty good and Wednesday I just expanded on what I learned.”

The 47-year-old local angler is unsure what to expect the next couple of days based on his knowledge of Table Rock’s fickle ways in the spring. “The fish are starting to move up,” Statler said. “It is just that transition where they are up today and down tomorrow. If you ask me how is it going to be tomorrow? You never know. It is Table Rock and it is in the spring. I may have to do something totally different. I think the guy who wins this is going to fish three different ways on three different days.”

Other anglers in the Top 5 of the boater division include Ryan Heavener, Tulsa, Okla., third, 16-4; Randy Sullivan, Breckenridge, Texas, fourth, 15-5; and Drew Sloan, Scurry, Texas, fifth, 15-0.

Taking over the lead in the nonboater division is Mike Jones of Fayetteville, Ark., with three bass weighing 11-2. The 41-year-old car salesman said he frequently fishes Table Rock because he lives only an hour and a half from the lake. “We got into the fish and it was ‘hammer down,’” he said of his day. “I was just fortunate enough to get a couple of big bites.”

Leading the co-angler division for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award after the first day is Brian Murphy of Sulphur, La., with a 5-3 largemouth.

Hosting this event is ExploreBranson.com. Friday’s launch, weigh-in and the final-day launch will be held at the Table Rock State Park Marina, 380 State Park Marina Drive in Branson. The final-day weigh-in will move to the Bass Pro Shops at 1 Bass Pro Drive in Branson.

Coastal Carolina University Anglers Take Early Lead In Bassmaster College Series Regional

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — The start of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops at Winyah Bay offered a shift in weather as rain and high winds handed the 77 teams different conditions from what they experienced in practice.

That didn’t faze the Coastal Carolina University team of John Duarte and Chesley Alford, however. The local favorites notched 15 pounds, 10 ounces of bass to take the early lead.

Their great start gave them a cushion of more than 2 pounds over the second-place team, Patrick Walters and Tyler All of the University of South Carolina. Duarte and Alford knew that the changing conditions and upcoming cold front meant they had better find a big bass on the first day to set the pace. They did so, catching a 5-13 largemouth that is currently in the lead for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass prize for the event.

“We wanted to catch a big fish early to set the tone,” Duarte said. “We managed that and then filled our limit. We only caught six fish, but we had numerous other bites.”

Their game plan came together perfectly as they didn’t see another competitor and had their best areas all to themselves. With that bonus big fish today, Duarte and Alford say they plan  “run the tide” in hopes of catching a limit of bass Friday. The strategy requires racing up or down river to be at the better fishing spots when tidal movement is most conducive to bass feeding activity.

“It’ll be very important to boat a limit on Friday,” Alford said.

“Now that we have the big fish out of the way, hopefully catching a limit each day will hold us over and help us stay consistent at the top,” Duarte added.

The Coastal Carolina duo knows that the USC team of Walters and All — also local favorites — are in striking distance after catching 13-7 today. The teammates are from nearby Summerville, S.C., and have years of experience at Winyah Bay and the connected rivers.

“We’ve been able to pre-fish occasionally since December,” Walters said. “We’ve been able to fish every river at Winyah Bay multiple times, so we had a pretty concrete idea where our best population of fish was. We stayed patient with them today.”

Walters attributes the calm demeanor of his teammate, Tyler, to their success as they didn’t fall apart after losing three solid keepers just outside of net range that would  have helped boost their total above 13-7. Having local knowledge helped the pair hit high-percentage areas and avoid places that appeared to be productive, but weren’t.

“You have to maximize your time because this place is so vast and there is a lot of dead water,” Walters said. “You can’t be in dead water and think you’re on them because that’s when your day will turn for the worst.”

The third-place team of Max Gresham and Zack Blake of Valdosta State brought 13-1 across the scales today. Baylor Ronemus and Cole Tinsley of Clemson are fourth with 12-15, and J.T. Russell and Chase Grubbs of the University of Montevallo are fifth with 11-7.

The full field of 77 teams will head back out on Winyah Bay Friday in hopes of making the Top 20 cut to advance to Saturday’s final round.

Takeoff Friday is at 6:30 a.m. ET at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex, located at 101 River Walk Drive, Georgetown, SC 29440. Weigh-in will start at 2:45 p.m. ET at the same location.

First Look: Gene Larew Punch Out Craw By Walker Smith February 23,2017

First Look: Gene Larew Punch Out Craw

Walker Smith

Thursday at 8:00 AM

This versatile soft plastic works excellently for a variety of techniques. It has a great action and holds up quite well to multiple fish catches.

Since it was announced at ICAST, I’ve been hearing a lot about this new Punch Out Craw from Gene Larew. Several of my fishing buddies have been using it with a great deal of success and they were most impressed by its versatility in a number of different situations. So naturally, I had to get my hands on a few packs to see if this bait lived up to all of the hype.

After using it extensively for the past several months and catching lots of nice bass with it, I’ve developed a lot of confidence in this bait. If you’re looking to simplify your soft plastic selection, I think it’s worth careful consideration.

Seventeen teams arrived at Lake Gaston during the early hours of Saturday February 25th for the second event of the North Carolina Bassmaster High School Series (East Division), presented by Mossy Oak Properties, Kissel Krafts Custom Built Fishing Rods, Z Man Fishing Lures and Collins Inc.  With warm weather abundant the entire week leading up to the event, the anticipation of some great catches were running wild through the minds of all the anglers and by the end of the day, the weights proved to be more than expected.

DSCN4614DSCN4638

Carrying momentum from their win in event number one at Falls Lake, Alden Patterson and Logan Jennings shined again, as the tandem secured the top spot with a five fish limit that weighed an impressive 18.80 lbs, including a 5.52 lb kicker fish.  The pair of anglers were presented with matching first place plaques and each received a $75.00 certificate to be used toward the purchase of a Kissel Krafts rod product.  Patterson & Jennings caught multiple fish throughout the day by targeting boat docks near secondary points within creeks while using jigs as their lure of choice.

Wyatt Long and Hunter McKee secured the second position with their five fish limit that tipped the scales at 16.55 lbs, anchored by the single largest fish of the day weighing in at 6.98 lbs.  The duo were presented with matching second place plaques for their efforts.  Long and McKee caught their fish using crankbaits around areas of exposed vegetation and also used a jig around docks to secure a couple of bites.  Their day got off to a great start, as the anglers landed their two largest fish on consecutive casts within the first 10 minutes of the tournament.

Luke Rasberry and Cole Lanier filled the third spot with their catch of 11.57 lbs.  Finishing in the fourth spot was the team of Nick Mitchell and Trevor Lewis with 10.36 lbs, while Nicholas Godwin and William Pucket completed the top five with their catch of 10.13 lbs.
