MISSOURI’S WATSON WINS WALMART FLW TOUR INVITATIONAL ON NORRIS LAKE PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

MISSOURI’S WATSON WINS WALMART FLW TOUR INVITATIONAL ON NORRIS LAKE PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

[print_link]

ANDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 22, 2016) – After three career Walmart FLW Tour top-20 finishes, numerous wins at the AAA-level and two career championship appearances, pro James Watson of Nixa, Missouri, earned the first FLW Tour victory of his career and $95,400 Saturday at the Walmart FLW Tour Invitational at Norris Lake presented by Quaker State with a final day’s catch of four largemouth and one smallmouth bass weighing 9 pounds, 12 ounces.

Watson’s three-day total of 15 bass totaling 36-10 gave him the win by a narrow 3-ounce margin over second-place angler Jason Lambert of Pickwick Dam, Tennessee (36-7). In addition, Watson became just the second angler to qualify for the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup – the world championship of pro bass-fishing.

“I thought I blew it today, so I am absolutely floored,” said Watson, who pushed his FLW career earnings to more than $276,000. “I’ve won a B.A.S.S. Open, I’ve won a P.A.A. event, but I’ve never won an FLW Tour event. I’ve been fishing these things a long time and I bleed FLW. This is such a huge win for me – by far the biggest financial win of my career. And to punch my ticket to the Forrest Wood Cup before the season even starts, this is big time.”

Watson said that he did most of his damage this week on Norris Lake in the area known as the Loyston Sea. His key baits were a River2Sea Whopper Plopper, a River2Sea Bubble Walker, a War Eagle Buzz Toad rigged with a Luck-E-Strike Frantic Frog and a ½-ounce brown finesse jig with a Luck-E-Strike Baby Guido Bug.

“Fall is just my time of the year,” Watson said. “I have more confidence from August to December than I do at any other time of the year. I really thought I was going to whack them today, but I got caught up and didn’t have any new water that I felt comfortable running.

“I caught two small ones in the last 15 minutes that gained me a couple of ounces and fortunately those fish were enough,” Watson continued. “I caught one smallmouth on a spinnerbait today as well – the only spinnerbait fish that I caught and the only smallmouth that I weighed in – and that was a key fish for me today as well.

“In the weigh-in line I saw Lambert’s bag and I saw Adams’ bag and I didn’t think that I had enough to win,” Watson said. “It’s hard to win any bass tournament, but it’s even harder when you’re fishing against the best guys in the world. Those guys are absolute hammers and to get the win today is just something else.”

The top 20 pros on Norris Lake finished:

1st:          James Watson, Nixa, Mo., 15 bass, 36-10, $78,400 + $17,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:         Jason Lambert, Pickwick Dam, Tenn., 15 bass, 36-7, $23,720

3rd:         Tracy Adams, Wilkesboro, N.C., 15 bass, 35-10, $19,600

4th:         Derrick Blake, Rockwood, Tenn., 15 bass, 33-14, $15,680

5th:         Wesley Strader, Spring City, Tenn., 15 bass, 32-15, $11,760

6th:         Michael Neal, Dayton, Tenn., 15 bass, 29-1, $10,192

WATSON TAKES LEAD ON DAY TWO OF WALMART FLW TOUR INVITATIONAL ON NORRIS LAKE PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

WATSON TAKES LEAD ON DAY TWO OF WALMART FLW TOUR INVITATIONAL ON NORRIS LAKE PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

[print_link]

ANDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 21, 2016) – Norris Lake is setting up for a dramatic final-day shootout tomorrow at the Walmart FLW Tour Invitational at Norris Lake presented by Quaker State.

Seven-year FLW Tour veteran James Watson of Nixa, Missouri, who started the day in second place, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Friday weighing 13 pounds, 4 ounces to take the lead with a two-day total of 26-14.

Watson is trailed by a contingent of Tennessee and Carolina anglers – Jason Lambert of Pickwick Dam, Tenn. (23-12), Derrick Blake of Rockwood, Tenn. (23-8), Tracy Adams of Wilkesboro, N.C. (22-2) and Wesley Strader of Spring City, Tenn. (21-13), round out the top five. Day One leader David Williams of Maiden, N.C. (16-13), fell to eighth after weighing just one bass totaling 1-12.

With the weights so tightly stacked up top any of the top five anglers have a legitimate shot to win the tournament and the top prize of more than $78,000 along with a coveted spot in the world championship of bass-fishing – the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup.

“I only had two bites a day during practice, but they were the right clues that I needed,” said Watson, who has eight career top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “Where I am catching them at is very, very specific. I’ve never been so dialed in in my entire life. We’ll have to see what this weather does, though, because it is going to play a big factor.

“I’m catching topwater fish and flipping boat docks,” Watson continued. “I thought the topwater bite would go all day today but it ended quickly when the sun peeked out. I’m fishing in one part of the lake and looking for the right combination of rock.

“I caught more keepers today than I did yesterday, but it seemed like I had a better day yesterday,” Watson said. “The wind changed directions today and messed up my water so I ran a lot of new water today and caught some fish off of stretches of bank that I wasn’t dialed in on. That gives me confidence that I’ll be able to put together a quality limit tomorrow.

“I said it on stage – I love fishing during the fall,” Watson went on to say. “There are not enough bass tournaments this time of year. I can catch 12 pounds a day all year long and that’s pretty good during the fall. I hope I can do it again tomorrow.”

The top 20 pros that will advance to the final day of competition on Norris Lake are:

1st:          James Watson, Nixa, Mo., 10 bass, 26-14

2nd:         Jason Lambert, Pickwick Dam, Tenn., 10 bass, 23-12

4th:         Tracy Adams, Wilkesboro, N.C., 10 bass, 22-2

5th:         Wesley Strader, Spring City, Tenn., 10 bass, 21-13

6th:         Michael Neal, Dayton, Tenn., 10 bass, 19-15

7th:         Quaker State pro Matt Arey, Shelby, N.C., nine bass, 19-0

8th:         David Williams, Maiden, N.C., six bass, 16-13

9th:         Eddie Whiten Jr., Pickens, S.C., eight bass, 16-10

10th:       Bill Dunn, Maynardville, Tenn., eight bass, 16-8

First Look: Rapala Skitter V Topwater Lure by Walker Smith October 20,16

First Look: Rapala Skitter V Topwater Lure

Walker Smith

October 20,2016

Originally designed for inshore gamefish, this new lure is also a great option for topwater bass fishing.

I use saltwater lures for bass fishing quite a bit. I fish a lot of highly pressured lakes and the unfamiliarity that comes with these lures can result in some incredible days on the water. In fact, I spend a large part of my vacation scouring the local saltwater tackle shops for potential big bass producers. My family might even get a little annoyed by it.

After several months of testing the new Rapala Skitter V, I’ve found it to be a stellar option for coaxing big topwater bites from otherwise lethargic bass. Its fishability and unique sound have proven to be quite impressive.

Below are my thoughts on this new lure.
