Daiwa Zillion SV TW Casting Reel Review

Jason Sealock

October 11,2016

Jason Sealock discusses the new technologies in the Daiwa Zillion SV TW reel that make it one of the better reels on the market.

Daiwa launched several new reels in the last couple of years and their quality has been incredible with many of the new releases. The new Daiwa Zillion SV TW casting reel is quickly becoming one of my favorite new casting reels of 2016. The SV Concept technology combined with their TWS technology make this one the best casting reels on the market and maybe one of the easiest to use.

DICK’S Sporting Goods Signs On As Presenting Sponsor For Outdoors Expo And B.A.S.S. High School

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — DICK’S Sporting Goods has signed a three-year partnership with B.A.S.S. that includes sponsorship of both the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo and the fast-growing Bassmaster High School program.

The partnership builds on the momentum gained during DICK’S Sporting Goods’ sponsorship of the Outdoors Expo, held concurrently with the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro in March. The 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro will be DICK’S ninth consecutive year as presenting sponsor of the Outdoors Expo, and it is expected to draw some of the largest crowds in tournament history. The event has averaged more than 102,000 people in attendance annually over the past five years.

The Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo will take place March 24-26, 2017, in Houston, Texas, at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The Expo will cover more than 300,000 square feet, the largest in Bassmaster Classic history.

“The Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods continues to grow in popularity and importance to the sportfishing community each year, and we’re grateful for DICK’S Sporting Goods’ continued support of this outstanding event,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “And we are extremely pleased that DICK’S has stepped up to support high school fishing, which we see as so vital to the future of sportfishing.”

Based on its continued success as the presenting sponsor of the Outdoors Expo, DICK’S is expanding its reach to young anglers throughout the country. The new partnership extends to the Bassmaster High School program, including the Costa Bassmaster High School Series and the Bassmaster High School All-American program.

“DICK’S Sporting Goods is committed to the future of fishing and young people in the outdoors,” said Dave Natale, Director of Sports and Event Marketing, “and high school fishing is an exciting and fast-growing activity that we’re glad to be a part of.”

More than 6,000 high school anglers have joined the B.A.S.S. High School program, and 520 clubs throughout the United States competed on the Costa Bassmaster High School Series in 2016, and the list is only continuing to grow. High school anglers were awarded more than $100,000 in scholarship money in the past year.

DICK’S will also serve as the presenting sponsor of the Bassmaster High School All-American program, which is in its third year. The program recognizes high school anglers who have demonstrated outstanding fishing ability, strong leadership and exceptional character. Nominations for the 2017 Bassmaster High School All-American team will open in January.

Balishin wins co-angler title

HENDERSON, N.C. (Oct. 10, 2016) – David Wright of Lexington, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 13 pounds, 6 ounces, Saturday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Regional event on Kerr Lake presented by Evinrude, with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 43 pounds, 9 ounces. For his win, Wright earned $65,000, including a new Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard, and a berth into the 2017 BFL All-American Championship.

Wright said he spent the majority of the tournament concentrating on flats with stumps and brush, or drops with rocks along a 10-mile stretch in Nutbush Creek.

“I started Thursday fishing a shaky-head jig with a Zoom Trick Worm because that’s what I had caught most of my fish on in practice,” said Wright, who logged his eleventh career win in FLW competition. “At my first area – a rock in a channel – I noticed two bass were following it as I was winding in. When I noticed that, I told myself I ought to be throwing a crankbait. So I picked one up and never threw anything else.”

Wright said he rotated between Hot Mustard-colored Rapala DT10 and DT16 crankbaits, and a Bluegill-colored DT14, depending on how deep he was fishing.

“Around 11:30 a.m. I only had three fish for six pounds,” said Wright. “Around 1 p.m., I worked in a WEC Lures Crankbait and caught a 6-pounder. That’s the biggest fish I’ve caught in those waters in 20 years.”

On Day Two, Wright said he returned to his key areas and boated 15 keepers. He cited the DT14 as his most productive bait.

Wright said he continued rotating through his crankbaits on the final day of the event, and was able to piece together his limit on a fairly consistent basis.

“I went to a stump and caught two keepers in the morning,” said Wright. “From there, they got bigger. I caught a few more before lining up with two trees that I knew well. There, I caught a 4-pounder that I’m almost certain I had lost earlier in the event. I was feeling pretty good by then. I brought in what I had thinking I only had about 12 pounds, but ended up weighing more than 13 pounds.”

The top six boaters that qualified for the 2017 BFL All-American were:

1st:          David Wright, Lexington, N.C., 15 bass, 43-9, $65,000

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2017 BFL All-American will be held May 31-June 3 on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA-MONROE WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FINALE ON OUACHITA RIVER

UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA-MONROE WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FINALE ON OUACHITA RIVER

[print_link]

MONROE, La. (Oct. 8, 2016) – The hometown University of Louisiana-Monroe team of Tyler Stewart and Nicholas Joiner, both of West Monroe, Louisiana, won the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference event on the Ouachita River Saturday with five bass weighing 16 pounds, 9 ounces. The victory earned the club $2,000 and advanced the team to the 2017 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“It feels great to win this event,” said Stewart, a junior majoring in business administration. “Being from the local school there was a lot of pressure on us to do well.”

“Today we showed that we can defend our home waters, and that’s awesome,” said Joiner, a junior majoring in agriculture. “It gives the young anglers coming in as freshmen some hope that they can do well in this program.”

The duo said they spent their day picking apart a creek in the D’Arbonne Bayou. They said they ran along its edges and backwaters, flipping stumps and laydowns.

“We caught 90 percent of our fish flipping a darker-colored V&M Flippin’ Jig with a V&M Wild Thang Craw Trailer,” said Joiner. “We’d flip it to a stump and let it drop, or cast and reel in before letting it drop. It was a slow process, but one of our main goals was to be extremely quiet. We stayed off of the trolling motor and push-poled our way through the backwaters.”

Stewart said they also caught 80 keepers on the day, also catching a portion using a black and chartreuse-colored WEC Custom Lures E1 square-billed crankbait.

“We hit flurries of about 20 fish at a time, and then would go 30 minutes with only a bite or two,” said Stewart. “We used the E1 when there wasn’t much brush around.”

Joiner said he caught a 5-pound, 12-ounce kicker on the Flippin’ Jig to help anchor their limit and push the team to the top of the standings.

The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2017 College Fishing National Championship are:

1st:          University of Louisiana-Monroe – Tyler Stewart and Nicholas Joiner, both of West Monroe, La., five bass, 16-9, $2,000

ILLINOIS’ JENKEL WINS COSTA FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE OF THE OZARKS PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

ILLINOIS’ JENKEL WINS COSTA FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE OF THE OZARKS PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

[print_link]

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. (Oct. 8, 2016) – Derek Jenkel of Pinckneyville, Illinois, weighed in five bass totaling 18 pounds, 3 ounces, Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Central Division finale on Lake of the Ozarks presented by Evinrude with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 52 pounds, 5 ounces. For his win, Jenkel took home $35,815.

“I spent the event fishing three areas near Hurricane Deck Bridge,” said Jenkel. “I flipped between six to eight docks at each area, and moved on when I had a limit.”

Jenkel said he used a green-pumpkin and blue-colored Gambler Lures Tube and a Cumberland Craw-colored Lunker Lures Limit Series Jig to catch eight keepers on Day One.

“On Day Two, I worked a Watermelon Candy-colored Zoom Magnum Trick Worm into the mix,” said Jenkel. “The bite was getting tough with my other two baits, so I went with a more finesse-style presentation. I was able to get seven keepers into the boat on Friday.”

On the final day of the event, Jenkel said he focused on one key stretch of docks. He said that particular area produced the majority of the bass he brought to the scale.

“I’m not sure why, but there was a great population of fish in that location,” said Jenkel. “I had three different rods on the deck, and flipped until my arm hurt – and then I flipped some more.”

Jenkel said his decision to switch to the finesse bait was what helped him edge out the rest of the field.

“When I switched to the Zoom Worm, I started getting bites,” said Jenkel. “It was a very crucial part of my tournament. I didn’t get a lot of bites, but when I did, they were nice ones.”

The top 10 pros on Lake of the Ozarks were:

1st:          Derek Jenkel, Pinckneyville, Ill., 15 bass, 52-5, $35,815

First Look: Impulse Zell Rowland Topwater Rod by Terry Brown – October 7,2016

First Look: Impulse Zell Rowland Topwater Rod

Terry Brown

October 7,2016

Terry has been using this rod while fishing topwater plugs this year and has really enjoyed several of its design aspects.

Zell Rowland is the master of the Pop R. He paints, tweaks, rubs and changes it to fit his style and between he and a few of his buddies like Gary Klein and Rick Clunn brought that bait back from obscurity.

In the early days Rowland was with All-Star and between his topwater rod and a flipping stick, he was able to stay on top of the leader board more often than not. He had a specific topwater rod developed that allowed the conical-shaped spitter to be cast better and because it had a slow taper, it allowed hooked fish to stay buttoned up much better. When he left All-Star he began the test of finding another rod of similar action.

That’s where the Impulse Zell Rowland Topwater Rod was born.

Tackle Talk: Berkley Powerbait Thief Walker Smith

Tackle Talk: Berkley Powerbait Thief

Walker Smith

Not only does this soft plastic bass fishing bait catch ‘em, but it’s also an extremely durable and economical choice for budget-minded anglers.

Apparently I’ve been living under a rock because until recently, I hadn’t even heard of the Berkley Powerbait Thief. Wired2Fish CEO Todd Hammill was ranting and raving to me about it and ended up sending me a couple of packs to try. And my word, it catches the tar out of ‘em.

I’ve been fishing with it for about a month and it’s a darn good bait for flipping and pitching; it’s quickly becoming one of my favorites.
