Bonadona Leads At Stingy Red River

SHREVEPORT/BOSSIER CITY, La. — Brent Bonadona of Port Allen, La., has been fishing the Red River for over 25 years, but he’s never seen it like this.

“I started fishing here when I was 15 years old, and I’ve never seen so many sandbars and no grass,” Bonadona said. “All you can do is chase shad.”

Bonadona did that well enough to take the Day 1 lead Thursday in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open with a five-bass limit weighing 11 pounds, 14 ounces.

“I thought it would take a little more than that to have the lead here,” he said.

Charlie Hartley of Grove City, Ohio, is second with 11-5, followed by Luke Estel of Murphysboro, Ill., with 11-2 and Todd Murray of Prairieville, La., with 11-0.

The floodwaters that have roared down the Red River twice this year, most recently in August, have presented a brand new playing field for the 178 boats of pro and co-anglers in this tournament.

“It’s a lot different,” said Stephen Browning of Hot Springs, Ark., who won Bassmaster Opens here in 2013 and 2014. “The floods have really changed the whole ecosystem. This used to be the snake capital of the world. They’re gone. The turtles, alligators, crawfish — all the crazy wildlife that you think about when you think about Louisiana — it was right here. Now it’s gone. But it will come back.”

Browning is in 59th place with a limit that weighed 6-13. With a 12-inch minimum length limit, only 51 pros brought five-bass limits to the scales. Three pros had limits weighing only 6-3.

Elite Series angler Cliff Crochet of Pierre Part, La., had the Phoenix Boats big bass on the pro side of 4 pounds. Co-angler Nathaniel “Rudy” Rudisill of Bossier City, La., caught the big bass of the day — a 4-pound, 13-ounce largemouth.

Rudisill’s pro partner was Hartley, the former Elite Series angler who qualified for the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro with a Northern Open win on the James River in August.

“It was truly a team effort,” Hartley said. “I had the spot and my co-angler had the lure. He changed lures and caught that 4-13 and a 2 3/4-pounder in three casts. Normally I wouldn’t switch lures that quick, but I did then.”

Earnest Smoak of Keatchie, La., leads the co-angler division with a three-bass limit weighing 9 pounds, 7 ounces. Christopher Thornton of Morgan City, La., is second with 9-0, followed by Rudisill with 8-11.

The Top 28 anglers in the pro division are separated by only 3 pounds. After Friday’s weigh-in the field will be cut to the Top 12 anglers in each division, so picking up a few clues on Day 1 will be key.

“I think I figured out a few things toward the end of the day that might help me a little bit,” Bonadona said. “But they’d moved today from where they were in practice. They might move again (Friday), so I’ll just have to make adjustments.”

Friday’s 7 a.m. takeoff and 3:15 weigh-in will be held at Red River South Marina.

Introducing the DOWNStream® Jacket and Sweater – SIMMS

Introducing the DOWNStream® Jacket and Sweater

Natural Down Blends  With PrimaLoft® Insulation to Take Cold/Wet Weather Protection to the Next Level.

There’s something rewarding about an epic bite that takes place in the middle of nasty conditions. Sub-freezing temps combined with rain, snow and/or sleet encourage many to remain in the comfort of home but for many of us, it’s when we’re standing in the river in the midst of these conditions that we feel most at home. Now that Fall has arrived, winter isn’t far behind. For the coming season when you need to take warmth and weather protection to the next level, wrap yourself up in the DOWNStream® Jacket and Sweater. Technical Apparel & Sportswear Product Line Manager, Eric Miesch is here to explain all the features and technology behind the fishiest cold weather piece Simms has released.

Simms: At a glance, the new DOWNStream® Jacket and Sweater look a lot like standard “puffy” layering pieces, but in reality, there’s a lot of fishy functionality that can’t be see. Talk to us a little bit about some of the technical aspects that make all of the DOWNStreams® so effective and versatile.

Miesch: So I would say that yes, the DOWNStream® Jacket and Sweater are super warm but, really, in my mind, because we incorporated a waterproof, breathable laminate, they’re actually incredibly water resistant. What I mean is, whether it’s snow, rain, sleet or hail, DOWNStreams® do an outstanding job of keeping your warm while simultaneously keeping you dry. In all honesty, the functionality of the DOWNStreams® (in most cases) prevents you from having to wear an outer shell.

PLANO PRO EARNS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

STEVE PENNAZ TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE FRESHWATER FISHING HALL OF FAME

[print_link]

Plano, IL (September 29, 2016) – Founded in 1960 and based in Hayward, Wisconsin, the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame exists, in part, to recognize persons, organizations and institutions who have made significant and lasting contributions to the sport and heritage of fresh water fishing. For those who have committed a lifetime of service in support of the traditions, ethics, promotion and expanded participation of sport fishing, enshrinement in this storied institution represents the greatest of honors.

Like the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, Plano Synergy seeks to preserve the past, present and future of recreational sport fishing – specifically, through the manufacture and distribution of the world’s premier tackle storage products and fishing accessories. The company’s trusted Plano and Frabill brands have helped anglers catch more fish and have more fun doing so for 64 and 78 years, respectively – largely, by working closely with an extensive and knowledgeable fishing pro staff.

Minnesota native, Steve Pennaz, is one of those Plano pros, and will receive the honor of being inducted into the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in 2017. “It goes without saying, this honor recognizes Steve’s contributions, dedication and service to the fresh water sportfishing industry,” says National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame Executive Director, Emmett Brown, Jr.

“I’m humbled by this honor,” states Pennaz, who has carved out a truly remarkable career in the sportfishing industry, which has educated, entertained and inspired millions of anglers along its course.

Pennaz was named Executive Director of the North American Fishing Club (NAFC) in 1988, where he served on the upper management team that successfully launched the organization. It eventually grew to more than 550,000 members. He also oversaw the development and launch of that organization’s award-winning North American Fisherman magazine, and served as the publication’s editor for more than 15 years.  Every issue was read by millions of avid anglers. But there was more to do at NAFC, and even more anglers to inspire.

Pennaz would go on to host the NAFC’s flagship television programs, starting with North American Outdoors on ESPN and ESPN2, North American Fisherman and Fishing Club Journal on ESPN2, NBC Sports, and Sportsman Channel, and Fishing Club Journal on Outdoor Channel. The popularity of these innovative programs was fueled by a ravenous and expanding NAFC membership base, as well as a grassroots presentation headlined by Pennaz’s fishing knowledge and welcoming personality. One of his original segments, Knot Wars, proved incredibly popular, pitting two knots in a head-to-head competition to see which was stronger – so popular that it eventually grew into its own smartphone app. Knot Wars was the #4 paid sports app when launched in 2010.

Pennaz’s TV and video production work grew as the demand for outdoor programming and electronic media increased. He currently produces Lake Commandos, Man vs Lake vs Man and also hosts Stone Cold Fishing, an internet mini dedicated 100% to ice fishing. The quality of his video productions have earned Pennaz Outdoor Channel’s prestigious Golden Moose Award for programming excellence, Sportsman’s Channel’s Fan Favorite Fishing Show, and the Professional Outdoor Media Association’s Pinnacle Award.

Throughout his busy career, Steve Pennaz has always found time to serve the fishing and conservation communities. He served three years on the board of the National Fishing Week Steering Committee and 15 years on the board of directors of Wildlife Forever, a non-profit conservation organization based in Minneapolis. Of course, Pennaz never abandoned writing. His freelance career includes countless credits in leading outdoor print publications such as Outdoor Life, Bassmaster and In-Fisherman.

Not surprisingly, the wealth of angling knowledge he shares with his readers and viewers comes from Pennaz’s own significant fishing experience earned at hundreds of locations across North, South and Central America, as well as Europe, while targeting a wide variety of fresh and saltwater species. Always the innovator, Pennaz has his share of favorite fish stories. He once used a Batman action figure to catch Canadian lake trout on camera for ESPN. Another time – out of sheer desperation – he used a Leatherman and a bottle cap to make a functional popper out of a minnowbait. It caught numerous tuna 65 miles off the Gulf Coast. In 1990, Pennaz won the U.S. National Ice Fishing Championship and competed in the first-ever World Ice Fishing Championship in Inari, Finland as a member of Team USA. He competed in his second World Championships in Ontario, Canada two years later. Team USA medaled in both competitions.

“The relationship between Plano, Frabill and Steve goes back decades,” says Plano Synergy Marketing and Pro Staff Coordinator, Justina Whalen. “He’s always been there when we’ve needed him… whether it’s been product input or feedback, event support, media interviews… you name it. We’re thrilled for Steve and couldn’t be happier, more appreciative or more proud to call him one of our own.”

Steve lives in Independence, Minnesota with his wife Karen, daughter Maddie and son Pierce.

Mike Iaconelli teams up with Flambeau Outdoors to co-design X-Treme Tackle Storage line

MIDDLEFIELD, OHIO – Teaming up with Bassmaster Elite star Mike Iaconelli, Flambeau Outdoors is reinventing the conventional tackle tray with a new design offering unmatched possibilities for creative customization and a ramped-up dose of anticorrosive Zerust: the result is the Iaconelli co-designed X-Treme Tackle Storage (XTS) line.A completely customizable battery of small internal boxes replaces the traditional divider system found in conventional tackle trays. These divider boxes allow anglers to mix and match as needed. They can be swapped out or completely removed to create a bulk storage area anywhere in the box for items like pliers, bags of soft plastics, extra-large lures and line spools. Internal box dividers stay in place even when adjacent dividers are removed to create bulk storage. Divider boxes come in four sizes and are completely interchangeable throughout the line.

OVERVIEW- Fishing will improve this month! Water temperature will be in the 70’s. Best times will be early morning, late afternoon and cloudy days this month. Fishing the past few weeks has been good. Cooler and shorter days will make for better fishing as the water temps start to go down.

Largemouth Bass- Fishing for largemouth bass should be good this month. Best lures will be jigs, drop shots, medium diving crank baits, Texas rigged plastic worms, football head jigs, Carolina rigs and shaky heads. Most largemouth bass will start to move to their fall patterns this month. Brush piles, rocky points, humps, main points, secondary points and docks will be the best areas to try your luck. Best depths will be from the surface to 20 feet. Remember that baitfish will start to move up river and into the large creeks and coves.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be humps, ledges and long main channel points. Best lures will be tubes, jigs, drop shot rigs, jerk baits and deep diving crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Cloudy days with light winds and night time are good times to try your luck! Look for areas with rocks near ledges on points next to deep water. Look for humps and isolated rocks near deep water. Most smallmouth bass will suspend around baitfish this month.

Striped Bass- Fishing should be good this month. Stripers will be caught in the mid to upper sections of the lake and the large creeks. Best lures will be swim baits and Zoom flukes fished on 3/8 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. Stripers will start surface this month. Best time to fish is cloudy days, early morning and later afternoon. The best depths will be from the surface to 60 feet deep. Live bait fished on planner boards will also work this month. Most fish will be suspended and will constantly be on the move. Find the largest concentration of shad. Night fishing will be fair this month.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be good this month. They will be found 5 to 15 ft. deep. Crappie will be found around docks, deep brush piles, and fallen tree tops. Small live minnows and 1½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/32 to 1/16 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month.

TIP OF THE Month- Water temperature will fall this month causing the baitfish to move to the coves, creeks and up river. Try to find the areas with the largest concentration of bait fish. Night fishing will still be fair. You can also hear reports about local fishing on the website: THE BASS CAST RADIO SHOW each month. Make sure your running lights are on after dark! Remember to be courteous and obey all the boating laws. TAKE A KID FISHING!

FLW ANNOUNCES 2017 BASS FISHING LEAGUE SCHEDULE, RULES

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (Sept. 28, 2017) – FLW announced Wednesday the schedule, rules and payouts for the 2017 Bass Fishing League, which includes 128 tournaments in 24 divisions offering nearly $8 million in awards, including as much as $120,000 to the winning boater and $60,000 to the winning co-angler in the nationally-televised BFL All-American, plus advancement to the Forrest Wood Cup for a shot at winning the world championship of bass fishing.

Among the key changes for 2017 is the new “Win and You are In” format that automatically qualifies the winners of each of the 96 one-day qualifying tournaments to one of six no-entry-fee regional championships along with the top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division based on point standings.

“With the new format, you are never out of the running to qualify for a regional championship if you enter all five tournaments in a division,” said Daniel Fennel, director of BFL operations. “The most consistent anglers in each division are still rewarded with advancement based on points, but now you can have a bad tournament or two and still qualify with a late-season win.”

Each regional championship features a guaranteed payout that includes $20,000 and a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower outboard for the winning boater and a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower outboard for the winning co-angler. Regional payouts include $10,000 for second and $5,000 for third on the boater side and $5,000 for second and $2,500 for third on the co-angler side.

“FLW was founded upon providing first-class tournaments for the weekend bass angler,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW president of operations. “We have always considered our BFL anglers as being the heart and soul of FLW. We take great pride in continuing to grow the sport of bass fishing by providing these opportunities for weekend anglers as well as a clear pathway for advancement to the sport’s highest levels for boaters and co-anglers who qualify for the Costa FLW Series and ultimately the Walmart FLW Tour.”

Entry fees will remain the same as 2016 – $230 per qualifier for boaters and $115 per qualifier for co-anglers. Two-day Super Tournament entry fees will also remain the same – $345 for boaters and $175 for co-anglers.

For the complete 2017 BFL schedule, rules and payouts, visit FLWFishing.com.

The BFL is the nation’s largest and most popular weekend bass-fishing circuit. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division and the winners of each qualifying tournament and super tournament receive priority entry into the 2018 Costa FLW Series while All-American champions may advance directly to the Walmart FLW Tour, the world’s top professional bass-fishing circuit.

Revolutionary pedal-drive fishing kayak offers no-fail forward and reverse, unrivaled boat control and fishability

Old Town, Maine (September 28, 2016): Old Town Canoes & Kayaks is proud to announce that the ICAST 2016 award-winning Old Town Predator PDL is now shipping, bringing anglers no-fail forward and reverse for unrivaled hands-free boat control and fishability.

“We’re proud to report that we’re delivering the Predator PDL to dealers across the country,” said David Hadden, Brand Director for Johnson Outdoors Watercraft. “Actually, as you read this, many dealers have received Predator PDLs and are already reporting a very high level of customer enthusiasm.”

The reason for all the hype? For starters, Old Town has taken boat control to new heights with forward and reverse via an efficient and easy-to-use propriety pedal-drive system.

“We wanted to create the best pedal fishing experience on the planet, complete with forward and reverse. To that end, our R&D spent three years creating the most durable, dependable, fastest, quietest, and intuitive pedal-driven mechanism in the industry, as well as the perfect hull and boat design to go with it. The end result offers superior maneuverability in wind, current, and around structure. It really fishes like no other.”

One of the key differences between the Old Town Predator PDL and other pedal-driven kayaks on the market stems from engineering rooted in proven lifecycle technologies. What’s the adage? Like riding bike? While some pedal-driven kayaks rely on other physical motions, the Old Town PDL pedals exactly like a bicycle, converting modest pedaling into maximum propulsion. A 10.3:1 gear ratio means that anglers can reach speeds up to 5.5 mph to reach fishing spots fast and efficiently. It also makes trolling through a range of user-adjustable speeds easy and effective.

The PDL Drive itself is easy to carry, operate and stow—and a proprietary weedless prop design creates the perfect combination of efficiency, speed, and torque. Additionally, Old Town’s PDL Drive allows smooth forward and reverse and a small turn radius allow for the ultimate in boat control via one-handed rudder control on the boat itself.

“We also knew the system had to dock, deploy and stow quickly and easily, run in shallow water, but also pivot up quickly for navigating underwater obstacles. That was another considerable engineering hurdle,” said Hadden.

What Old Town engineers designed is a compact, lightweight and rugged machine, with 16” of draft for navigating skinny waters, and a unique pivot and docking system that allows users to go from parked to peddling (or vice versa) in seconds. This also means anglers can avoid obstacles almost instantaneously and beach the boat virtually anywhere. A mere 21 lbs., the PDL Drive console is easy to transport; it even floats. Padded pedals allow for bare-footed comfort, and a carry handle makes for easy transport.
