OVERVIEW: The hot days and increased boat traffic make for tough fishing conditions. Water temperature will be in the 80’s. Most species of fish will feed at night , early morning and late afternoon this month. Fishing for stripers should improve.

Largemouth Bass-Fishing will be fair. Best lures will be Carolina rids, crank baits, large Tevas rigged plastic worms, jigs, top water lures and shakey heads. Most largemouth bass will be caught on ledges, points, humps, brush piles and deep docks. Largemouth bass will also feed at night when the shad come shallow. Most shad will finish spawning this month. Best depths will be from the surface to 25 feet deep. Bass will continue to feed on top water this month.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be humps, ledges and main points. Best lures will be jig & pig, top water lures, hair jigs and crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will start to feed in open water on shad this month. Cloudy days are good times to try your luck! Light line and smaller lures work best most of the time.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in the mid to lower sections of the lake
and the larger creeks. Best lures will be Alabama rigs, swim baits, buck tails, and Zoom flukes fished with 1/2 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. Live bait will also be productive. The best depths will be from the surface to 50 feet deep. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish. Night fishing will not be very productive.

Crappie-Fishing for crappie will be poor this month. They will be found 10 to 25 feet deep this month. Best areas will be in the main creeks around docks, fallen trees, and brush piles in the mid to upper parts of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Fishing around lights at night will be productive.
TIP OF THE Month: Try fishing early morning, late afternoon and at night. Make sure you leave your running lights on at night. Please practice catch and release. Remember to always wear your life jacket and attach your kill switch. Warmer water temperatures and heavy boat traffic will make fish feed more at night this month.

Sometimes simple strategies are the best strategies. And they don’t get much simpler than the game plan put together by Michigan pro Skip Johnson on Kentucky Lake for the sixth and final stop of the 2014 Walmart FLW Tour season. His strategy: Don’t move.Johnson spent all four days of competition on one hole on Kentucky Lake’s southern end. He landed more than 22 pounds each day Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, a string of lost fish cost Johnson, and he brought in just 19-12.

But Johnson rallied on Sunday. All day long he hammered away, catching more than 75 fish and culling up to the day’s best limit of 24 pounds.

The four-day, 88-pound, 10-ounce performance earned Johnson his first career Tour victory and a check for $100,000.

Redington Retains Lead, Morgan Wins Angler Of The Year Title At Walmart Flw Tour Event On Kentucky Lake Presented By Evinrude

Redington Retains Lead, Morgan Wins Angler Of The Year Title At Walmart Flw Tour Event On Kentucky Lake Presented By Evinrude

Arkansas’ Kelley Wins Co-Angler Title, $20,000
28.Jun.2014
PARIS, Tenn. – Boy Scouts of America pro Tom Redington of Royse City, Texas, brought a  five-bass limit weighing 18 pounds, 13 ounces to retain his lead after day three of the Walmart FLW Tour at Kentucky Lake presented by Evinrude. Redington now enters the fourth and final day of competition as the No. 1 seed in the event featuring 162 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world casting for the top cash award of up to $125,000.Redington has brought a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 65 pounds, 12 ounces to the scale, which gives him a slim 1-pound, 2-ounce lead over second-place pro Skip Johnson of Goodells, Mich., who caught five bass today weighing 19 pounds, 12 ounces. Johnson has weighed in 15 bass totaling 64 pounds, 10 ounces in his three days of competition.“It was way tougher today and my fish just weren’t there,” said Redington, who made his first top-10 cut of the season. “I didn’t get a limit until mid-morning. The schools that I had yesterday were kind of broken up and I was forced to scramble around and find some new fish today.“The numbers of fish that I caught were about the same, but they were way smaller in size. And I didn’t see nearly as many fish there on my electronics. The weather was a little different today. We’d been getting storms in the afternoon, but today we had storms in the morning. I had to use finesse tactics today, like the first day. I tried throwing the big power baits, but I still only caught small fish.”

Redington said that he threw five different baits today, but only caught fish on three. He said that because the top-10 weights were so close he isn’t really feeling much pressure heading into the final day.

“Less than four pounds separates me from 10th place,” Redington said. “Whoever catches the biggest bag tomorrow will win. It’s basically a one-day tournament now, so there isn’t much pressure.

“The worst that I can do is 10th place, so I’m not going to try to put together a small limit to save my ego,” Redington went on to say. “I’m going to fish for the big ones and if I don’t get them, then so be it. I’m going for the win.”

Overall there were 100 bass weighing 373 pounds, 11 ounces caught by pros Saturday. All 20 professionals weighed in five-bass limits.

Pros are competing for a top award of up to $125,000 this week plus valuable points in the hope of qualifying for the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart, the world championship of bass fishing. The top 35 anglers in the point standings from the six events on the 2014 Walmart FLW Tour will qualify. The 2014 Forrest Wood Cup will be in Columbia, S.C., Aug. 14-17 on Lake Murray and is hosted by Capital City Lake Murray Country. The winning angler in that event will win $500,000 – professional bass-fishing’s richest prize.

Anglers were also vying for the prestigious 2014 Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the Year presented by Kellogg’s title that is determined by the most points accumulated over the six Tour events in 2014.

For the second straight season, Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tenn., wrapped up the Kellogg’s Angler of the Year title on Saturday. He narrowly edged out Repel pro Cody Meyer of Auburn, Calif., by just 9 points in a tightly contested race that thrilled fishing fans throughout the season. Morgan clinched the second Angler of the Year title of his career after finishing the tournament in 14th place. Morgan, who received $100,000 for the title, also will receive an automatic berth into the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup.

Cody Kelley of Conway, Ark., won the co-angler division and $20,000 Saturday with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 54 pounds, 9 ounces, followed by Joe McClary of Kirkwood, Mo., in second place with 15 bass weighing 54 pounds, 1 ounce worth $7,500.

“These pros that we fish with are so good and they are so tough to fish behind,” said Kelley. “You have to find one little bait or one thing unique that you can do to catch a few. This week for me, it’s been a new bait from Crock-O-Gator bait company called a Swamp Bug Sr. I was able to get 8 or 9 keepers each day by slow rolling it and it was the key for me this week.”

The top 10 co-anglers finished:

               1st:          Cody Kelley, Conway, Ark., 15 bass, 54-9, $20,000

               2nd:         Joe McClary, Kirkwood, Mo., 15 bass, 54-1, $7,500

               4th:          Brian Wilson, Somerset, Ky., 15 bass, 49-5, $4,000

               5th:          Joshua Weaver, Macon, Ga., 15 bass, 49-4, $3,000

               6th:          Dennis Cameron, Travelers Rest, S.C., 14 bass, 48-9, $2,500

               7th:          Timothy Curran, Huntsville, Ala., 15 bass, 48-7, $2,000

“I’ve been fishing as a co-angler for three years,” said Johnson. “My first year on Tour I practiced with Brett Hite. Last year I practiced with Cody Meyer. This year, I’ve been practicing with Brent Ehrler. Those guys are the best in the world and when you practice and fish with them, these kinds of things tend to happen.”

Setzer wins Co-angler of the Year Title after Johnson Disqualified

Setzer wins Co-angler of the Year Title after Johnson Disqualified

29.Jun.2014
PARIS, Tenn. (June 29, 2014) – Braxton Setzer of Auburn, Ala., was declared FLW Tour Co-angler of the Year early Sunday morning, just one day after the title appeared to have slipped through his grasp on Kentucky Lake.On Saturday Jason Johnson of Gainesville, Ga., was declared the winner over Setzer after finishing 11th in the tournament, matching Setzer’s 1054 points for the season and winning the title by a tiebreaker. To win the tiebreaker Johnson needed to weigh-in at least 11 pounds, 14 ounces. He brought 14 pounds, 3 ounces to the scale. Unfortunately for Johnson, who has fished the FLW Tour as a co-angler since 2012, that all changed when it was discovered that he had fished from the front deck of Cody Meyer’s boat Saturday, a clear violation of FLW Tour rules.

“This is an unfortunate situation,” said Tournament Director Bill Taylor. “Video from the day shows a single incident where Johnson stepped onto the front deck to net a fish for Cody Meyer. Johnson then makes a cast from the front deck and works his lure while waiting with the net. It was clearly an innocent mistake, but it is a violation nonetheless.”

The video can be seen on FLW’s YouTube channel here.

Evinrude pro Andy Morgan wins 2014 Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the YearLast year Andy Morgan put his hands on his first Walmart FLW Tour Kellogg’s Angler of the Year trophy in front of his home crowd on Lake Chickamauga in Tennessee. This year the venue may have changed, but it seems only fitting that he claimed his second AOY title from the Tennessee portion of Kentucky Lake. It wasn’t an easy victory for Morgan; in fact, he finished the event on Kentucky Lake in 14th place which was one spot ahead of runner-up Cody Meyer. He won the title by just nine points over Meyer.

“I hate to see the season end after the year both Cody [Meyer] and I had,” said Morgan of his dominating performance. “I feel bad that we both had these kinds of seasons in the same year. Cody will have his time and he will win one of these.”

Despite being one of the most consistent anglers on Tour, Morgan never dreamed of capturing back-to-back AOYs.

“Realistically, you can’t expect to go out and win the Angler of the Year title,” Morgan went on to say. “You have to go out and try to get every dollar you can at every event. And honestly, you need to just try and survive. I have learned how to survive and if you do that then the pieces will fall into place for a good season.”

To say Morgan’s season was fantastic would be an understatement. His worst finish of the year came at Sam Rayburn with a 22nd-place finish. Before that, Morgan took 13th at Okeechobee and 2nd from Hartwell. Jump to Beaver Lake and Morgan again found himself in the runner-up spot. On Pickwick he landed in 21st and ultimately culminated in his 14th-place showing this week.

Frank Poirier and Tom Leary

Chris Stanley and Donald Green
Clear skies and very light winds greeted 18 teams on the Potomac River for the 4th stop of the Richmond Marine Centers US Anglers Choice Virginia Division. With the days weather expected to be hot and sunny everyone was excited to finally have a “normal weather day” for one of our events. This time the forecast lived up to its hype it was an excellent day on the water and everyone caught fish. The Potomac River has been fished to a froth over the recent weeks, with BFL events and the recent FLW Rayovac series on the river just a few weeks ago. Not to mention fishing on a Sunday presents challenges of fishing pressure from Saturdays anglers. Most teams were able to figure out how to catch fish but only a handful got a big bite to make the difference. In the end it was the team of Frank Poirier and Tom Leary who topped the field with a winning weight of 13.60 lbs. The team reported catching their fish on soft plastics and top water frogs. The team had a big fish that anchored their catch of 4.92 lbs that Leary caught on a frog. According to Frank, Tom told him early in the day he was going to catch a big fish on the frog and he produced. That fish along with the others netted the anglers winnings of $1,020 for their catch. Congratulations.

Finishing in second place with a winning weight of 13.25 lbs was the team of Chris Stanley and Donald Green. Chris and Don caught their fish on swim jigs in and around grass all day to secure their catch. Water depth of less than 4 feet seemed to be the key to their success. For their efforts the team took home $539.

Rounding out the top 3 was the team of Mike Hicks and Keith Lupo with 5 fish weighing in at 12.46 lbs. Hicks and Lupo caught fish throughout the day on wood cover grass and pads. Hicks stated they caught fish in plastics, crankbaits and chatterbaits for their weight. This is the teams 2nd top 3 in four events and puts them in a good position to make a run at the point’s championship for the season.

Big fish honors for the event went to the tram of Ken Pressley and Jeff Salmon. Pressley caught the big fish on a topwater frog in the pads over about 3 feet of water. The team’s big fish weighed in at 4.99 lbs and helped the team take home $180.00 for their catch.

The Virginia Division also offers the Missile Baits “Boost Award” to the team that finishes the first spot out of the money in each event. The Missile Bait “Boost Award” winning team for the Potomac River event was the team of Ken Pressley and Jeff Salmon with a total weight of 12.22 lbs. The team will receive $50.00 in Missile Baits products of their choice. Congratulations!

For the event, we had a total of 86 fish brought to the scales for a total weight of 179.94 lbs for an average of 2.09 lbs per fish. With the water temperature ranging from 81-88 degrees, the river is producing fish in post spawn summer patterns.

Richmond Marine Center’s AC Tournament Trail Virginia Division could not exist without great sponsors. We would like to thank Richmond Marine Center for logistics and organizing the set up and take down for the event. If you are looking for a new bass boat or need service on your current rig, give Ben Gibson a call, they will take great care of you and your equipment.

A big thank you goes out to Hopkins Gun and Tackle located in Mechanicsville, VA for the awesome weigh-in trailer that provided us protection during the terrible weather conditions. If you have not visited their store, make plans to do so soon. They carry everything a bass fisherman could want and need for their tournament success.

We would like to thank these other great sponsors, Missile Baits, ALX Rods, Optima Batteries, Jethro Baits, Lowrance Electronics, All Terrain Tackle, Propeller Dynamics and Sqwincher.

AC Tournament Trail National Sponsors: Legend Boats, Mercury Outboards, Motorguide, Rayjus, SolarBat, TFO Rods, Lunker Lure, Fishidy, SureLife, EGO S2 Slider and Bass Tackle Depot.

Our next event will be on James River August 9th launching from Osborne Park Landing. If you have questions about the upcoming events or the tournament trail, please feel free to give me a call. Jeff Salmon 804-221-7653

Humble Pie By Jason Houchins

Humble Pie

By Jason Houchins

Anyone who has read one of my articles or knows me, knows I’m not the best at off shore angling. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s definitely a mindset that I need to change. For whatever reason I need to throw at something. The only time I have had real confidence off shore is while fishing up north for smallmouth or down south for spots. Now, I have no problem throwing at bridge pilings or deep docks over deep water, but “ledge fishing” is for sure my weak link.
Recently a good friend of mine, Kevin Baldwin has really changed my mind with only a few pictures. Kevin and his friend Joe Leonard, spent one day here at Kerr and Kevin texted me to let me know how I needed to get off the bank. I always chuckled at him and let him know I can always catch them shallow buddy. He asked if I had been catching them and what I had been doing in tournaments. I told him that just the other day I won a small open and proudly told him I had almost 14 lbs. Then Kevin laughed and said it must have been a 2 fish tournament, because I had that in 2 fish! Yes, and I’m a multimillionaire who only works to occupy my time. After we had a good laugh about it, the pictures started rolling in. In total disbelief I just knew he was somewhere else, no way he was here. Wrong!
They had a mere 26 lbs. with 5 fish that day. Mid June, Kerr lake, and present year. Just goes to show how arrogant someone like me can become on my home lake. Believing that 15-18 lbs. is a huge bag and can’t be out done this time of year. No way were those fish caught here, impossible if one of us locals didn’t do it. Ah yes, another lesson learned in the life of fishing Kerr. I have become an arrogant complacent fisherman who knows it all, this is a wakeup call I needed. Just when you think you know the answer, the question gets changed or maybe the answer was never right. If I had heard this from anyone other than a close friend that I know, I would have never ever believed it, especially in June.
Well I am rejuvenated at finding something different. I am ready to break through the stubborn hard shell of history, I have to find something more. Just so I’m clear on this, these fish were caught on Kerr June 19, 2014, the pictures are of 4 of the “better” fish caught. Thank you to my good friend Kevin Baldwin and his friend Joe Leonard. Both are Watson’s Marine Pro Staffer with an enormous amount of experience catching off shore bass. Kevin credits Joe with showing him a bunch about off shore bass fishing and I would say the proof is in the pudding. These two have really opened my eyes to things that are right in front of me. I think humble pie is something we all need to eat in order to become better fisherman, and I got a whole pie this past week.
