Come out & Fish with Castaway Angler’s Smith Mt. Tournament – 3/12/2016

0
Hey Everybody,
Our first tournament of the year is this coming Saturday (March 12, 2016) on Smith Mountain Lake out of the State Park from 7AM to 4PM. Be there early we are going to try to blast off around 6:45AM if possible, because there is going to be a Region tournament going out of the state park at the same time (about 50 boats) We would like to get out before them. We need to get everybody in the water and we will meet out on the water just outside of the no wake zone in front of the swimming area (to the right of the ramp). We will blast off from there.
There are some of you who have not turned in their application and dues for the years yet. I have talked to many of you and time is running out to get it in if you want to fish Smith Mt with us next weekend. The last day to join is this Thursday (March 10, 2016) in order for you to be able to fish next weekend. Call or text me at 434-258-4231 and we will try to get together and get it taken care of.
Next Saturday is supposed to be in the low 70s and should be a great day to fish. I hope to see everybody there.

TULSA, Okla. — Matt Allen and Caden Watson overcame a major handicap while scoring a runaway win at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series presented by Bass Pro Shops.

Allen and Watson, students at Tennessee Technological University, caught four bass weighing 18 pounds, 1 ounce, in the one-day exhibition tournament held on Lake Hudson.

Matt McArdle and Josh Bensema of Texas A&M teamed up for second place with a catch of four bass weighing 14-5. Colten Hutson and Easton Ramsey of the University of Central Oklahoma earned third place with two bass weighing 5-12. The weights for the remaining eight teams were in the single digits.

Allen and Watson drove 10 hours from the campus in Cookeville, Tenn., to eastern Oklahoma to practice for the tournament. That plan went bust not long after they launched the boat.

Just after idling from the boat ramp, their boat struck a rock and bent the prop shaft of the outboard motor. They were unable to repair the engine before the tournament.

“We just spent the day practicing around the boat ramp,” said Allen, 23, a marketing and production operations management major. “Looking back, it was probably good after seeing the other weights.”

It wasn’t a bad idea at all. Allen boated a keeper within minutes of the tournament start time and as other boats left the launch site. The team focused on two areas within sight of the boat ramp.

The Tennesseans concentrated on a long stretch of rocky shoreline used for erosion prevention. The shoreline gradually sloped from 7 to 12 feet with the best fishing on the deepest side.

When the action slowed, they moved to a shallow cove adjacent to the main river channel. They suspect the bass used the deeper edge of the cove to stage before moving shallow to spawn.

“We fished it a couple of times on the practice day and bass were moving up from the deeper water,” said Allen.

Allen and Watson used a 1-ounce Zorro Baits Rattlin’ Aggravator Spinnerbait. The lure featured a white and chartreuse skirt with a No. 7 Colorado blade.

“The breakdown was actually good since it forced us to find bass near the ramp and fish longer in the same area,” said Watson, 19, a civil engineering major.

College Classic anglers took the same stage at the BOK Center in Tulsa as the anglers fishing the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro. The College Classic weigh-in was the opening act for the final Classic weigh-in.

Top college anglers were selected to compete in the seventh annual exhibition tournament. Last year’s College Classic winners, Andrew Helms and Zander Monk of the University of North Carolina Charlotte, received an automatic invitation. So did Bensema and McArdle of Texas A&M, the reigning B.A.S.S. collegiate national champions. Top anglers from last year’s High School Classic now enrolled in college and several schools from the host state of Oklahoma were also invited.

Allen and Watson received an automatic invitation to compete in the event next year.

Evers Comes From Behind To Win GEICO Bassmaster Classic On Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees

Evers Comes From Behind To Win GEICO Bassmaster Classic On Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees

TULSA, Okla. — For the first two days of the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro, the buzz centered around local sensation Jason Christie of nearby Park Hill, Okla.

But on the final day, another of Oklahoma’s favorite sons stole the show.

Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., caught an incredible 29 pounds, 3 ounces of bass from Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees Sunday to push his three-day total weight to 60-7. The epic finish was enough to help him storm past Christie and the rest of the Classic field to earn a $300,000 payday and a spot in professional bass fishing history.

The win was Evers’ 11th with B.A.S.S., but his first time to raise the Classic trophy.

“It hasn’t quite hit me yet,” said Evers, who was fishing his 15th Classic. “I don’t know when it will. But I know 29 pounds on the last day of the Classic is big.”

Evers certainly didn’t seem like he was ready to win a Classic championship earlier in the week.

He spent most of Friday’s first round fishing shallow rocks with a crankbait. The pattern had worked well for him before competition began, but he believes it was zapped by the changing conditions.

He brought in only four fish that weighed 13-12.

“That pattern was really strong in practice, but it was going away,” Evers said. “The water was warming, and it just was not happening. I knew I had to do something different, and I feel like I made a really good decision that second day.”

Evers practiced what he called “damage control” during Saturday’s second round by making a long run up the Neosho River. He used a spinnerbait and a flipping stick to catch 17-8 and vault himself into third place.

“You could have a hundred Classics on Grand, and 99 times out of a hundred it wouldn’t be won with what I did the second day. It just helped me get back in it, as tough as things were.”

One factor that made things so tough the first two days was the lack of wind on Grand Lake. With the water calm and flat, bass hanging out in the shallows were skittish and reluctant to bite.

The conditions were so calm, in fact, that Evers neglected to go to a spot in the Elk River where he had caught some big fish on windy days in practice. But with strong winds blowing Sunday, he decided to make the run to the Elk and see if he could start his day with a big fish.

He did — and then he added four more big ones to bring in a five-bass limit that ranked as the heaviest of the three-day event by almost 9 pounds.

“I went in there just to try and get a couple of big bites,” Evers said. “I caught a couple of 7-pounders there in practice. But it was real windy and blowing when I caught those fish, and it had to be that way to catch them in there.”

Mother Nature toyed with him a little early, but the conditions eventually played right into his hands.

“When I got in there and the wind wasn’t blowing, I was getting antsy,” Evers said. “Then I caught one of those big ones, and it just settled me down. I knew I could make something happen in there.

“I still wasn’t expecting to catch 29 pounds, but it all worked out.”

The magic bait for Evers on his magic day was a 5/16-ounce jig that he helped design for Andy’s Custom Bass Lures. It was green, brown and orange, but he said the material used to build the bait was the most important element.

“Andy is one of the few guys where you can still buy that old flat brown rubber,” Evers said. “In clear water, that’s the deal.”

While parts of Grand Lake were heavily stained this week, Evers found crystal-clear water in the Elk River.

“I was focusing on a flat that the current was hitting really hard,” Evers said. “It’s a flat with water coming over the top of it, and it has all types of laydowns. The water was so clear I could see the fish in there.”

Evers is the third straight angler to win the Classic in his home state, following South Carolina angler Casey Ashley’s win last year on Lake Hartwell and Alabamian Randy Howell’s victory in 2014 on Lake Guntersville.

For much of the week, it seemed like Christie would be the Oklahoma angler to hold that distinction. But after landing five-bass limits that weighed 20-14 and 16-11 the first two days, he managed only four fish that weighed 12-9.

Christie caught all of his fish using a heavy spinnerbait with a swimbait trailer.
“All of the rain we had during the winter really made this tournament interesting,” Christie said. “I would love to have gone out there and thrown a Rogue (jerkbait) the whole time. That’s what I prepared for in December.

“But that’s what the Classic is all about — changing conditions. It’s a tough tournament to win.”

Marty Robinson of Lyman, S.C., earned the GoPro Big Bass Award of $1,000 for his Day 1 bass weighing 7 pounds.

Kerr Lake fishing Report By Jason Houchins March 2016

Kerr Lake Report By Jason Houchins

March 2016

[print_link]
If high muddy cold water in March gets you excited, you’re in luck! March is shaping up to be a very interesting month at Kerr. Water temperatures aren’t too bad for the first week of March ranging in the mid to upper 40s throughout the lake. But with water levels at 304 and muddy, it has put a damper on the action for sure. Usually this is a jerkbait time of the year, but low visibilities will limit your success rate a bunch. I would go heavy on the crankbaits like shad raps, speed traps, and rattle traps all being my favorite choice. Still look for rock or pea gravel banks where they can be seen. And try all types of retrieves with everything you throw. Keep a black jig handy as well and I would attach some kind of trailer that will make a commotion. I would also look at throwing spinnerbaits, maybe go with a Colorado blade or tandem combo for more vibration. I would definitely be patient until you get a bite, then build off of that. There are a lot of unknowns fishing water this muddy, this high, during this time on year. They like to suspend now and with the water up like it is you literally have several more pieces added to the puzzle. Usually the low visibility will put them tight on some type of cover, that doesn’t seem to be the case so far.
Usually you can run to the lower end of the lake to find clearer water. Do not bank on this now, it is kind of muddy to almost unfishable all the way to the Dam. It is also super stained from the mouth of Nutbush almost to the splits where Nutbush and Little Nutbush merge. I have to admit that I have never seen it this dirty everywhere for such a long period of time. Even the creeks that are protected and usually clean are muddy, so be prepared for it. The best thing I can tell you is the fish have to be used to it and if we have a warming trend that lasts a few days, that dirty water will warm fast. There is always a silver lining because the life of a bass revolves around eating and mating. They have to eat, even if there is 6 inches of visibility. With no real rain forecasted, the water getting pulled, and a good looking warming trend shaping up next week, it will improve rapidly. Remember March is probably the best big fish month for this lake so don’t let the water conditions stop you from heading out.

Christie In Position To Go Wire-To-Wire At GEICO Bassmaster Classic

Jason Christie of Park Hill, Okla., maintains the lead on the second day of the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro at Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, bringing 16 pounds, 11 ounces to the scales on Saturday for a two-day total weight of 37-9.

Christie In Position To Go Wire-To-Wire At GEICO Bassmaster Classic

TULSA, Okla. — For the first 43 years of the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro, only one angler managed to win the event in his home state.

Now, there’s a chance it could happen for the third year in a row.

After establishing a solid lead with 20 pounds, 14 ounces on Day 1 at Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, Oklahoma pro Jason Christie added 16-11 Saturday and maintained his spot atop the leaderboard with a two-day total of 37-9. Christie leads second-place angler Todd Faircloth (31-14) by more than 5 pounds, and has better than a 6-pound advantage over third-place angler Edwin Evers (31-4), another Oklahoma native.

“It wasn’t a great day by Grand Lake standards, but it was pretty good compared to what everybody else did today,” said Christie, who lives in Park Hill, Okla., just an hour from Grand Lake. “Just like Friday, I was surprised that I had as much weight as I did.”

Christie was emphatic Friday that he was going to stick with the one tactic that’s really been working for him since practice began for the event last week.

He stuck with it Saturday, and it worked again. He plans to claim a Classic title or go down swinging with the same approach Sunday.

“It’s the only thing I’ve caught a fish on since I got here for practice,” said Christie, adding that he’ll give more details on what he’s doing as soon as the tournament ends. “There’s just no reason to change.”

Though a lead of 5 plus-pounds is sizable, Christie said he hardly feels like he’ll be home-free with another good day Sunday — especially with anglers like Faircloth and Evers as his closest competition.

“I don’t know if there’s any such thing as ‘home-free’ on Grand Lake,” Christie said. “There are a lot of big fish in this lake, and anything can happen.”

After landing in ninth place with 14-15 Friday, Faircloth added 16-15 Saturday to jump into second with 31-14. Like most of the field, he found the fishing slow and sometimes frustrating.

“It’s so hard to stay focused when you’re going so long between bites,” Faircloth said. “When you’re not getting many bites, you really need to execute on every one you get. It’s tough.”

The Texas pro, who is fishing his 14th Classic, said he also plans to stick with what’s been working — even though the fishing hasn’t been fast and furious.

“I’m fishing everything in front of me,” said Faircloth, who holds five B.A.S.S. victories but no Classic titles. “I’ve been catching them off docks, off wood — a little bit of everything.

“I do have a couple of spots that I haven’t been to, and I caught a couple of big fish on those places in practice. But I could go there tomorrow and not get a bite. So I’m going to stick with what I’ve done the last two days and see what happens.”

With 13-12 on Day 1 and 17-8 on Day 2, Evers was one of the few anglers whose catch improved dramatically Saturday. He said his better catch was the result of a complete change in strategy.

“It’s not hard to improve when you only catch four fish the first day,” Evers said, laughing. “I went and did something totally different today, and it’s not really the kind of thing that you normally do to win on Grand. But Grand is not normal right now.”

After a recent cold front, the water temperature is now rising rapidly on the lake, and many of the anglers think the fish are slightly in shock because of it. Some competitors have also been hurt during the first two rounds by a lack of wind that has made the lake slick and caused fish to be more skittish than they are in choppier water.

With more wind in the forecast for Sunday, Evers said he may redirect again.

“I think I made a good decision today, but I honestly don’t think I’ll go and do it again tomorrow,” he said. “I don’t think I can win with it, and that’s what I’m trying to do — win this thing.”

The tournament’s championship round will begin Sunday, with the Top 25 remaining anglers leaving Hard Rock Dock at Wolf Creek Ramp in Grove, Okla., at 7 a.m. The weigh-in is set to begin at 3:15 p.m. at the BOK Center in Tulsa.

The winner will receive $300,000 and the most coveted trophy in the sport.

Christie will be attempting to win a Classic in his home state, just as South Carolina native Casey Ashley did last year on Lake Hartwell and Alabamian Randy Howell did in 2014 on Lake Guntersville. Prior to Howell’s win, only one other angler had won a Classic in his home state — Alabamian Boyd Duckett on Lay Lake in 2007.

Christie will receive another $1,000 as winner of the GEICO Everyday Leader Award for leading the second day, plus an additional $1,500 for having a GEICO decal on his boat’s windshield. Christie has earned a total of $5,000 in GEICO bonuses.

Illinois Team Wins Costa Bassmaster High School Classic Exhibition

Illinois Team Wins Costa Bassmaster High School Classic Exhibition

TULSA, Okla. — While the pros slugged it out on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees for bass fishing’s world championship a high school team from Illinois earned another coveted title.

That event was the Costa Bassmaster High School Classic exhibition held during the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro.

Winning the high school title in impressive fashion was the team of Dailus Richardson and Trevor McKinney. The students from Benton High School in Illinois caught a five-bass limit weighing 18 pounds, 11 ounces from Lake Hudson, which is on the Grand River just below the Classic fishery.

Bailey Fain and Justin Selvidge of Lenoir High School in Tennessee took second place with two bass weighing 11-14. Daniel Jarvis and Hunter Silverstrim of the Queen City Bassmasters earned third place with two bass weighing 9-14. Fain and Selvidge caught the tournament’s biggest bass weighing 6-9.

Richardson and McKinney spent four days scouting the lake with fair success. They encountered relatively clear water and windy weather, two conditions that worked in favor of their strategy. All of that changed on tournament day when the same water turned muddy and calm.

“We had to go searching for clear water to make our pattern work,” said Richardson. “The water was really muddy on most of the lake.”

They found what they needed after running more than an hour from the launch ramp. The anglers concentrated in the back of a narrow creek where the water was clearer than the surrounding area.

The two lures chosen by the team to win the tournament have unusual back stories. McKinney went shopping Friday at the Bassmaster Classic Expo and found two lures to try Saturday. Those were a pair of Lucky Craft Skeet Reese SKT MR crankbaits.

“We knew a lot of fish around here are caught on square bill crankbait,” said McKinney.

Credit the spontaneous shopping trip for the win.

“In the first two casts, I caught keepers and knew we were on to something good,” said McKinney.

During practice, and without much success, McKinney used a 1/2-ounce Lunker Lure flipping jig.  He pitched the jig around logs and laydown trees lining the shoreline.

Alternatively, Richardson used an unconventional lure for the time and place of the tournament. He described the lure as a small jighead attached to a tiny rotating spinner. Crappie anglers recognize the lure as a Road Runner jig.

Richardson is fond of the tiny lure because he hand pours the leadheads himself. As success continued on the square bill crankbait, both anglers eventually fished with the lure to complete a limit.

Primary casting targets were isolated pieces of wood along a rocky shoreline. The bass were likely using the area to migrate into shallow water and eventually spawn.

Top teams affiliated with the B.A.S.S. High School Nation earned the chance to compete in this tournament.

The Top two teams from the Costa Bassmaster High School Opens in the Southern, Central and Midwest regions qualified. The Top two teams from the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship held last August on Kentucky Lake automatically qualified. Meeting the same criteria were the top teams from the exhibition event held at the 2015 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro. The final two teams invited were the best two teams from the host state of Oklahoma.

Hometown Favorite Christie Takes Lead In GEICO Bassmaster Classic Presented By GoPro

Hometown Favorite Christie Takes Lead In GEICO Bassmaster Classic Presented By GoPro

[print_link]

TULSA, Okla. — The bass on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees are in transition, and all of the 55 anglers in the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro are doing a decent job staying ahead of them.

But on Friday, one angler — a local favorite who lives right down the road — did it better than anyone else.

Jason Christie, a Park Hill, Okla., pro who lives just an hour away from the lake, brought five bass to the scales that weighed 20 pounds, 14 ounces and took the opening-round lead in the Super Bowl of professional bass fishing. Alabamian Greg Vinson, who almost missed the event due to the lingering effects of a concussion, is second with 18-1, and Texas pro Alton Jones is third with 17-13.

Even after a big day, Christie admitted the fishing was tough.

“It was slow. It was a grind, but it was a grind in practice,” Christie said. “I honestly didn’t think I had that kind of weight, but the fish up here just fool you because they’re thick and heavy.

“I’m not getting a lot of bites. I think the most I’ve had in one day is nine — and that’s including practice.”

Getting just nine bites during an eight-hour day forces an angler to exercise patience and remain focused through the down time so he doesn’t miss the next bite when it finally comes.

Being a local favorite, Christie wasn’t surprised that he drew a large gallery of spectators Friday. He hoped to feed off the energy of the home crowd, but he said all of the down time made it tough to do that.

With the daytime temperatures expected to rise into the 70s the next two days and the water temperature continuing to rise into the mid-50s, Christie said he may be forced to change areas. But he was clear that he won’t be changing techniques.

“I’m committed to what I’m doing,” said Christie, who wouldn’t expound on the tactics he’s using this early in the tournament. “I’m going to stick with it and either go down in flames or do well. I’ve just got so much confidence in the way I’m fishing. I may only catch three tomorrow, but they might weigh 16 pounds — and the potential for a really big bag is there.”

Vinson, who suffered a concussion after an unexplained fainting spell in a Montgomery, Ala., movie theatre Feb. 20, rebounded nicely with his catch of 18-1.

“I think it might have knocked a little sense into me,” Vinson said, laughing. “The first day of practice this week was really important to me, because it was the first day I had been on the water since the little episode. Just to be able to fish all day fluidly and feel like I was thinking clearly and making good decisions — that was big for me.”

It was during that early practice period when Vinson developed the pattern that vaulted him into second place. He said he fished all day Friday without seeing another angler.

“I didn’t feel like I would catch them in the exact same spots where I caught them in practice,” he said. “But I felt like, if I stuck with that type of pattern, I would eventually be able to get the bites.

“I had to run a lot of stuff today, but I hit two little flurries when they were right.”
Best of all, Vinson felt good physically.

“I finally feel normal,” he said. “To start with, I still had some headaches. But after the second day of practice, I really started to feel like myself again — and I’m OK now.”

Jones, who already owns a Classic trophy for his 2008 win on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell, said his good opening round was a result of a good choice he made prior to competition.

“I made a decision in practice, with this warm-up that was coming, I was going to fish where the fish were coming to,” he said. “There were a few of them already in there in practice, and I felt like I knew where they would be setting up when the tournament started.

“It was sort of an educated guess as to where the fish were going, and it worked out well for me today.”

The tournament will resume Saturday, with a full field of a 55 anglers leaving Hard Rock Dock at Wolf Creek Park at Grove, Okla., at 7 a.m. The weigh-in is set to begin at 3:15 p.m. at the BOK Center in Tulsa.

The field will be trimmed to the Top 25 for Sunday’s championship round, with the winning angler claiming a $300,000 prize.

Christie will receive $1,000 as winner of the GEICO Everyday Leader Award for leading the first round; an additional $1,500 was awarded to Christie for having a GEICO decal on his boat’s windshield.
