McMillan Shines At Seminole Open

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. — The fishing on the final round of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open No. 3 presented by Allstate was no different than it was on Thursday and Friday. It was a grind. Although Lake Seminole teems with big bass, October is the toughest month to catch them.

Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla., started the day with 39 pounds, 8 ounces, which put him nearly 7 pounds ahead of Trevor Fitzgerald, of Belleview, Fla., who was in second place. Only the Top 12 of the 166 pros and 166 co-anglers fished on Saturday.

McMillan needed that cushion. At 2 p.m. today, he had only three bass with 90 minutes left to fish. He kept his composure and caught the final two bass that filled his pro limit of five fish. Saturday, his five-fish limit totaled 9-13, which paled in comparison to the 19-pound limits he brought in on Thursday and Friday. However, they gave him enough weight to earn the victory with a total of 49-5.

Every bass McMillan caught came by flipping a Zoom Z Craw that was Texas rigged with a 4/0 Mustad hook and a 1 1/4- or 1 1/2-ounce Elite Tungsten Worm Weight. He horsed his bass from the thick grassbeds he was fishing with a 7-foot, 11-inch, G. Loomis flipping rod sporting a Shimano Core reel spooled with 60-pound Gamma braided line.

For winning the tournament, McMillan received a Skeeter ZX200 bass boat powered by a Yamaha VF200LA along with an additional cash prize. He also earned a berth in the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic  presented by GoPro because he fished all three of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open tournaments in 2015.

If that were not enough, McMillan also earned the most cumulative points in the Bassmaster Southern Open division. Any Bassmaster Opens angler that finishes among the Top 5 in the overall points standings qualifies for the Elite Series.

Elite Series pro Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., finished second with 45-6. Tharp failed to qualify for the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic through the Elite Series. Winning this event was his last chance to qualify for the Classic. He nearly pulled it off.

Tharp also flipped soft plastic baits into dense grassbeds to catch his bass. His 7-foot, 11-inch extra heavy action Halo Twilite rod was paired with 60-pound Gamma braided line. Two lures were his workhorses, Zoom’s Z Craw and Z Hog. One was rigged with a heavy Reins tungsten sinker and the other with a Reins Punch Shot Tungsten weight. The latter weight features a collar to which Tharp attached a skirt.

With a total weight of 44-10 Chad Grigsby of Maple Grove, Minn., claimed third place. On Thursday, Friday and most of today, Grigsby caught his bass with a FlippinBug soft plastic lure from Charlie’s Worms. He rigged the bait with a 1 1/2-ounce tungsten weight, 65-pound test Seaguar braided line spooled on a Lew’s baitcasting reel mounted to a 7-foot, 11-inch Halo flippin’ rod.

However, at 2 p.m. today, Grigsby had only two bass. He switched to a Zara Spook topwater plug and promptly caught three more bass, the biggest of which weighed 5 pounds.

Travis Kelehan of Broussard, La., won the co-angler division with a weight of 22-9. His prize was a Triton 179 TrX bass boat with a Mercury 115 Pro XS outboard.

“I fished with three outstanding pros this week,” Kelehan said.

Did he ever. He fished with Randall Tharp Thursday, Elite Series pro Greg Hackney Friday and Timmy Reneau on Saturday. All three of these anglers excel at fishing thick grass, which was just what Kelehan wanted.

Elite Series pro Chad Morgenthaler of Coulterville, Ill., caught the biggest bass on the pro side of the tournament with a largemouth weighing 8-12. He earned the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award worth $750.

The 6-10 bass caught by Eugene Stinson of Dry Branch, Ga., was the biggest among the co-anglers. Stinson earned a $250 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award.

For leading the tournament on Friday, McMillan received the $250 Livingston Lures Leader Award. Bailey Boutries of Daphne, Ala., claimed the co-angler Livingston Lures Leader Award, which is worth $250 in merchandise.

The $250 Allstate Good Hand Great Day Award went to Brent Bonadona. Larry Beauboeuf received the $150 Allstate Good Hand Great Day Award for the co-angler.

McMillan Surges At Seminole Bassmaster Open

Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla., leads on Day 2 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open #3 presented by Allstate held on Lake Seminole out of Bainbridge, Ga. McMillan brought 19 pounds, 10 ounces to the scales at Friday’s weigh-in for a two-day total of 39-8.

McMillan Surges At Seminole Bassmaster Open

[print_link]

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. — When bites are as hard to come by as they have been at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open No. 3 presented by Allstate on Lake Seminole, the leaderboard can change dramatically from one day to the next. That was painfully evident Friday for some of the anglers who were leading after Thursday’s opening round.

Elite Series pro Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Fla., dropped from first to 10th place with a two-day total of 25-1.

“I can’t believe I still made the Top 12 cut,” Lane said. “I’m happy to be fishing tomorrow.”

Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla., demonstrated that he is a young angler to be reckoned with. He brought in the heaviest five-bass pro limit today, 19 pounds, 10 ounces. McMillan’s two-day total of 39-8 puts him in first place with a cushion of nearly 7 pounds.

By making the Top 12 cut of anglers who will compete on Seminole for Saturday’s finale, McMillan has earned the top spot in the Bassmaster Southern Opens points race. Any Bassmaster Opens angler who finishes among the Top 5 in the standings qualifies for the Elite Series. That was McMillan’s goal for this season.

“I feel a little unbelievable at the moment,” McMillan said. “Things have gone right all year for me.”

Trevor Fitzgerald of Belleview, Fla., jumped from 13th place Thursday to second place Friday with a total weight of 32-10. The area he fished Thursday failed to produce a single bass on the second day. He left to fish new water and finally boated his first bass around noon. By 2 o’clock he had a five-bass limit that weighed 17-9. As are most of the other anglers who made the Top 12 cut, he is flippin’ soft plastic lures into thick grass beds.

The dream of winning the Seminole Open and qualifying for the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro is still alive for Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla. He failed to qualify for the Classic through the Elite Series. Tharp sits in third place with 30-7.

“I had saved some places and they paid off for me today,” Tharp said. “I have a few other places up my sleeve for tomorrow that have 7- and 8-pounders.”

To qualify for the Classic by winning a Bassmaster Open, you must fish all three tournaments in any of the three Bassmaster Open divisions. Tharp is just one of 15 Elite Series pros who did not qualify for the Classic that also could have earned a Classic berth by winning on Seminole. The only other angler on that list to make the Top 12 cut is Kelley Jaye of Dadeville, Ala. He is in seventh place with 27-6.

Bailey Boutries of Daphne, Ala., caught a three-bass co-angler limit on Thursday and Friday and leads the co-angler field with 18-7. On Saturday, the 16-year-old Boutries will compete to stay ahead of the other co-anglers who finished among the Top 12.

The proverbial match made in heaven must be Tim and Judy Reneau of Del Rio, Texas. Both of them will be fishing Saturday, as Tim sits in fifth place on the pro side with 29-5, while Judy is the seventh-place co-angler with 11-14.

Elite Series pro Chad Morgenthaler of Coulterville, Ill., is the new big bass leader on the pro side with a largemouth weighing 8-12. If none of the Top 12 anglers who fish on Saturday catch a heavier bass, Morgenthaler will claim a $750 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award.

Jay West of Canton, Ga., is the co-angler big bass leader with a 5-14 largemouth. If that bass holds up one more day, West will earn the $250 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass co-angler award.

Takeoff Saturday for the Top 12 pros and co-anglers will be from the Earle May Boat Basin at 7:30 a.m. ET. The weigh-in begins at 4:30 p.m. ET at Bass Pro Shops, 4059 Lagniappe Way, Tallahassee, FL 32317.

Lake Seminole Not Stingy For Bobby Lane

BAINBRIDGE, GA. — Although Lake Seminole teems with heavyweight largemouth bass, there were dour predictions from the anglers who are competing here this week in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open No. 3 presented by Allstate. It’s all about timing, and October is generally not a good time to catch a lot of bass at Lake Seminole.

Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., a favorite to win this tournament, said Thursday that the bass are currently scattered throughout Seminole’s abundant aquatic vegetation. You can catch a huge bass on any given cast, but you must stay on the move to find another bass that’s willing to bite.

Tharp weighed in a 17-pound, 8-ounce five-bass limit today, which has him in fourth place. Because Tharp failed to qualify for the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro via the Bassmaster Elite Series, he must win here to secure his Classic berth.

On Thursday, the first competition day, the fish proved to be stingy for most of the 166 pros and 166 co-anglers fishing in this tournament. Many of the pros failed to catch a daily five-bass limit and 26 of them did not catch a single keeper bass. Bass were even harder to come by for the co-anglers, as 75 of them failed to weigh-in a bass.

The tough fishing made leader Bobby Lane’s five-bass limit, weighing 20-6, even more impressive. The Lakeland, Fla., angler said he practiced only one day on Seminole. That was on Wednesday, the day before the tournament started.

“This place sets up good for a flipper,” Lane said. “I caught 15 to 20 bass today, and I have them all to myself.”

Lane is known for his ability to dig bass out of thick grass with a long, stout flippin’ rod.

Brandon McMillan of Clewiston, Fla., is close behind Lane in second place with a limit that weighed 19-14. McMillan was leading the Angler of the Year standings for the Bassmaster Southern Opens coming into this tournament. He believes today’s heavy limit will keep him high enough in the standings to qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series tour in 2016.

The Top 5 finishers in each of the three Bassmaster Open divisions qualify for the Elite Series. Should McMillan win this tournament, it will help to finance his Elite Series dream.

Elite Series pro Kelley Jaye is in third place with 18-4. “I fished one bait in three different areas all day,” Jaye said. “I don’t have a lot of company because I’m fishing offshore.”

Marty Spears of Tallahassee, Fla., sits atop the co-anglers with a three-bass co-angler limit of 10-11.

The anglers who are leading after today’s weigh-in are wisely keeping quiet about where they are fishing and the lures and techniques that are working for them. They don’t want to tip their hand to their competitors.

However, it is likely that most of the bigger bass weighed in today were caught with a tactic called “punching.” The lure is a soft plastic crawdad, or some other creature bait, rigged Texas style (weedless) with a large hook. A 1- to 2-ounce tungsten bullet sinker punches the lure through dense grassmats to reach the bass lounging in open water below the mats.

Hollow weedless frogs and Texas rigged sinking worms also saw plenty of action today.

Drew Cook of Midway, Fla., is the big bass leader on the pro side with a whopping 8-5 largemouth bass. The pro who catches the biggest bass during the tournament earns a $750 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award.

The big bass leader for the co-anglers is Eugene Stinson of Dry Branch, Ga., with a 6-10. If no co-angler catches a heavier bass before the tournament ends, Stinson will pocket the $250 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award.

About 15 pros piloted aluminum boats today so they could run far up the Flint River and navigate rocky shoals to fish for shoal bass. Feisty shoal bass do not grow nearly as big as Seminole’s largemouth bass, but they are more willing to bite a lure, especially in October. All the leaders in this tournament caught largemouth bass.

Thursday’s weather was picture perfect with a morning low in the 60s, a high in the low 80s and a slight breeze to riffle the water. Friday’s forecast is for more of the same.

Takeoff Friday will be from the Earle May Boat Basin at 7:30 a.m. ETFriday’s weigh-in begins at 3:30 p.m. at the same location. The final weigh-in for the Top 12 anglers on Saturday will take place at 4:30 p.m. ET at Bass Pro Shops, 4059 Lagniappe Way, Tallahassee, FL 32317.

CHICO STATE UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP ON CLEAR LAKE

CHICO STATE UNIVERSITY WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP ON CLEAR LAKE
[print_link]
LAKEPORT, Calif. (Oct. 20, 2015) – The California State University-Chico team of Travis Bounds of Roseville, California, and Andrew Loberg of Rocklin, California, won the FLW College Fishing Western Conference Championship on Clear Lake Sunday with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 38 pounds, 5 ounces. The victory earned the club $4,000 and advanced the team to the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship.
“Travis and I have known each other and been fishing together since we were 12 or 13 years old,” said Loberg, a senior majoring in Agriculture and Crop Science. “This season was our first as a team for Chico State and to win the Conference Championship and qualify for the National Championship is pretty cool.”
The duo mixed it up on the two days of competition, opting to fish deep on day one and shallow on day two.
Saturday was very cloudy and rainy,” said Bounds, a senior majoring in Construction Management. “We had to fish very slowly. We mainly fished deep rocks and ledges with a jig – ¾-ounce, black and blue with a twin-tailed grub as a trailer. We caught seven keepers.
“Today we figured out that there was a good reaction bite going,” Bounds continued. “We fished shallow grasslines with ChatterBaits and swimjigs with green-pumpkin Keitech swimbaits and had a really good day. We probably caught 16 or 17 keepers.”
“I think the key for us was just staying persistent,” Loberg went on to say. “When the cold front came in, it forced us to slow down and really pick everything apart.”
The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship are:

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 19, 2015) – Brent Anderson of Kingston Springs, Tennessee, weighed five bass totaling 12 pounds, 2 ounces Saturday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League (BFL) Regional on Kentucky and Barkley lakes presented by Lowrance with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 44 pounds, 1 ounce. For his win, Anderson earned $20,000, a new Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and a berth into the 2016 BFL All-American Championship.

Anderson said he targeted shallow schools of main-lake bass in an area 25 miles south of the takeoff ramp. He made long casts using a Heddon Zara Spook with 65-pound-test braid line. Despite catching nearly 30 keepers on day one, Anderson wasn’t sure that his pattern would hold up.

“Normally if I catch that many fish this time of year on Kentucky Lake I’ll have 25 pounds, but that wasn’t the case this time,” said Anderson about his 17-pound day one limit.
On day two Anderson returned to the same area but found that his schools had moved onto nearby flats. The Tennessee angler said he reached for a variety of baits to try and dial in on the bite.
“I almost left the area to try a completely different approach altogether,” Anderson said. “I raised my Power-Poles and drifted about 35 yards up onto a bar. As I was getting ready to leave, I threw the Spook out there and a 2½-pounder hit it. I casted again and another one grabbed. Those bites told me right where the school was.”
After the bite slowed down on the Zara Spook, Anderson said he pulled out a Yo-Zuri Rattl’n Vibe.
“I never catch them on a Vibe this time of year on Kentucky Lake,” said Anderson. “But, I threw it out there to where the school was and nabbed a 3-pounder. After that I ran to two additional schools near the area and caught about 18 more keepers – all on the Vibe. God wanted me to use that bait.”
On day three, Anderson said he continued to focus on schooling fish and ran the exact same water from days one and two.
“The schools were even more broken up,” said Anderson. “Day three was pretty much a tougher version of day two. I didn’t get as many bites and lost a few 3-pounders. I ended up with one keeper on the Spook and four on a Rat-L-Trap. Luckily it was enough to maintain the lead and get the win.”

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

B.A.S.S. Nation Announces 2016 Schedule, Exciting New Format

The 2016 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation tournament season will begin with the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional on Nevada’s Lake Mead April 6-8. The season will be comprised of three major regionals and the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, all with larger fields of contenders.

B.A.S.S. Nation Announces 2016 Schedule, Exciting New Format

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — More opportunities will be available for club anglers who qualify for the 2016 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation regional championships under the new B.A.S.S. Nation tournament format.

B.A.S.S. has expanded the B.A.S.S. Nation tournament format into three major regionals with larger fields of contenders. Under the new format, the divisions include a Western, Central and Eastern divisional. The Western Regional will be comprised of the same 11 states from the former Western division plus eight countries outside the United States.

The new format will allow more anglers to fish on their state teams in the regionals. “Each of those state teams will have 20 anglers and a couple of alternates, versus 12 anglers and a couple of alternates,” said Jon Stewart, B.A.S.S. Nation director. “So each team is going to be bigger, and we will have more states in a region.”

The regionals will also change to a Bassmaster Opens-style event with boater and nonboater divisions, rather than the partner draw system used in the divisionals. “That is something Nation anglers have requested for a while,” Stewart said.

The format change also increases the number of qualifiers for the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship (BNC). The top finishing boaters and nonboaters on each state team from the regionals will advance to the BNC, which will be held in the fall at a site to be determined later.

Stewart said he believes the changes will help the B.A.S.S. Nation ranks grow. “We’re ready to change things up,” he said. “We think giving more anglers a chance to participate in the regionals with bigger teams and letting each state send an extra person to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship will help us grow. There will also be substantial cash and awards paid directly to individuals in the regionals and the Nation Championship. For the anglers, the regionals and the championship will be the most lucrative events we have ever had in the B.A.S.S. Nation, maybe in any amateur event.”

The Eastern and Central regionals will now feature 190-boat fields, while the Western Regional will have a field of 110 boats. The breakdown of states in each division is as follows:

Western — Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and the countries of Mexico, Japan, Italy, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Australia and Portugal

Central — South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama

Eastern — Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, along with Spain and the Canadian province of Ontario

The Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional, April 6-8, on Nevada’s Lake Mead will be the first of the season. “Lake Mead has been fishing well the last couple of years,” Stewart said. “I have been told it should be really good that time of year.” B.A.S.S. has visited the lake five times, including the first Bassmaster Classic in 1971 won by Bobby Murray with 43 pounds, 11 ounces. The last Bassmaster event held there was the March 2002 Nevada Western Open won by Rob Vanderkooi with 29-14.

Next on the B.A.S.S. Nation schedule is the Central Regional, April 20-22, on Lake Guntersville in Alabama. “Guntersville is always a classic fishery, and April should be prime time for that lake as well,” Stewart said. “You have an opportunity to catch a fish of a lifetime any time you go there.” The lake is a frequent stop on the Bassmaster trail and has hosted two Bassmaster Classics. Last April, Skeet Reese won the Bassmaster Elite Series event there with a four-day total of 92-11.

The Eastern Regional is set for May 4-6 on Douglas Lake in Tennessee where nine Bassmaster events have been held. The last Nation tournament held there was a Southern Divisional won by Coby Carden with 49-5 in April 2013. A Bassmaster Northern Open in May 2014 was won by local favorite Ott DeFoe with 62-5.

The top boater and top nonboater from each state advances to the BNC, where the Top 3 contenders will advance to the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic. The date and location of the BNC will be announced at a later time.
