The Rat’s Out of the Bag by Fishidy

The Rat’s Out of the Bag

Rat-L-Trap SUPER-NATURAL and KNOCK-N-TRAP series have the looks that kill!

Maybe it’s the way they sound that sets them apart from all the rest.  Face it; Rat-L-Trap isn’t exactly a new company, and the lipless crankbait isn’t nominated for a best new actor award, but it has certainly demonstrated an ability to flat out catch fish from all corners of the U.S. for well over 20 years.  Whether you’re burning it just under the surface at busting smallmouth, ripping it through grass for largemouth, or targeting suspended and deeper fish by counting it down; this bait just does it all.  And now the company that started it all has raised the lipless bar a couple notches.

One look at the SUPER-NATURAL series and you’ll see for yourself just how super delicious these baits look.  Newly designed colors and patterns like Candy Craw, Blueberry Perch (below), Blue Shiner, Pinch’n Peach, and Fathead Minnow, are applied using cutting-edge technologies and are incredibly lifelike.  Packed with the same sound you know and love, and finished off by razor sharp Mustad hooks. When comparing them to others on the market the best way to describe the difference is to imagine looking at two televisions.  One is the big, wooden console from 1985, and the other is a 1080 flat screen wall-mounted next to the 10lb bass you caught at Lake Guntersville with your Dad on your first Rat-L-Trap that he gave you.

If you’re looking for a bait that’s a bit louder than a soft tap, and will provide you with the “Hey, I said get over here” size rattle, the KNOCK-N-TRAP will give you just that.  Shake it a couple times and you’ll see right away that it’s a much deeper, bigger sound, in the same size bait.  What you’ll also appreciate is that they’ve added a K to the tail of each bait so you can identify it from other Traps quickly and easily.  Gold Black Back, Sexy West, Chartreuse Flash (below), are just a few of the colors available that will immediately jump out at you as must haves for any body of water.

Here are a few other things to remember.  Each Trap comes with a case that you can close again and again.  Each weighs ½ oz, and are 3 inches long.  Most importantly, Rat-L-Trap lures are made in the U.S.A.  Bottom line is that they’re made here, with the highest quality, and are built to last.  The fish know the real deal when they see it, and now you do too!

Lane Busts Big Limit at St. Johns Elite Series by: BASS Communications

Lane Busts Big Limit at St. Johns Elite Series

Focus, slow down, try a different lure. Above all, follow your instincts.

That’s what Chris Lane said he did Friday. The result was a five-bass limit that weighed 37 pounds, 9 ounces. It was the largest one-day weight he’s ever achieved, said Lane, a five-time Bassmaster event winner, including the 2012 Bassmaster Classic.

And it was more than enough for the pro from Guntersville, Ala., to take the lead in the Bassmaster Elite Series event on the St. Johns River after two of the four rounds of fishing. Lane climbed from 15th place into first with a two-day total of 56-4.

Lane’s lead was an ounce shy of 9 pounds over first-day leader Randy Howell of Springville, Ala., who dropped to second place with a 47-5 two-day total.

50 straight limits By FLW Media

50 straight limits

20.Mar.2014 by Cody Meyer

Editor’s Note: On day four of the Walmart FLW Tour event at Lake Hartwell, Repel pro Cody Meyer brought in only four bass, ending his record-setting streak of 50 straight limits caught in Walmart FLW Tour Major and Forrest Wood Cup competition days.

Wow, 50 straight days with a limit – it’s so incredible to me to have that record. Obviously, when I started fishing the Walmart FLW Tour in 2010, I never thought of breaking the record for most consecutive limits weighed in. My focus was just on trying to get a limit every single day I fished so I could do well.

Howell Leads Elite Series on St. Johns River by: Jason Sealock

Randy Howell, the 2014 Bassmaster Classic winner, often says that professional bass fishing is a humbling sport.

He ate a piece of that bitter pie last week at the Bassmaster Elite Series season opener in Georgia on Lake Seminole, where he finished close to the bottom of the field. But this week, after a hop to Florida for the next event, Howell “The Champ” shined through.

With 27 pounds, 3 ounces, Howell led the field Thursday in the first of four days of Elite competition on the St. Johns River. He was 3 pounds, 2 ounces ahead of Davy Hite and Marty Robinson, who tied for second place with 24-1.

A Look Back @ The Bassmaster Elites on Lake Seminole by Bruce Callis

20140315-181201

The 2014 Dick Cepek Tires Bassmaster Elite at Lake Seminole presented by Hardee’s is now history. The rookie, Brett Hite, pulled off a veteran performance to claim the win by a whopping 13 pounds. And on the shortened last day he still managed to bring in 5 bass totaling 25.15 pounds for a total of 97.10 pounds.
But this tournament wasn’t won like so many had it pictured. Granted Shaw did start off the first day with a huge bag. But the sight fishing that everyone was expecting went away with the cold fronts that moved through. This tournament was all about change. Some anglers were able to make that change, some were not. One angler, Byron Velvick, even went with a more weekend warrior approach to it all. He had limited prefishing to help with the wear and tear on his body. Considering he finished 9th, I think it holds special meaning for us normal fisherman.
Change, and finding those bass that had backed off the bedding areas, seems like a simple thing for Elite anglers. Heck we do it all the time. And the Elite angler has a huge advantage; he has the top equipment to help him find the fish. So why were so many not able to even put 5 in the livewell? Were they so stuck on doing what they had planned from the prefishing or just what they thought the bass would do? I can go out and get skunked, or catch 1 or 2 bass, so I must be an Elite angler too.
I have gone out and fished a specific bait because I wanted to learn to use that bait better. It taught me something altogether different too. Granted, I did learn more about the bait and its use, how it came through the water in different situations and how not to fish it. But it taught me that change has a lot to do with me. My preconceived notion that I knew what the bass were doing can be so totally wrong. I still will go out and use a bait to learn from it, but I will not get stuck into a notion that I know more than the bass do.
Ike said he blew it; he didn’t make the changes he needed to make. Randy went out and really stunk up the water. But they were not alone. There were a total of 9 anglers who had 5 or fewer bass for 2 days of fishing. And one of the anglers on the last day only managed 1 bass. Elite? Weekend warrior? Oh if I only had the money to go Pro I would show them how to fish. Come on St. John’s River, I’m ready.

A look back at the Augusta County Bass Jon's Expo by Bruce Callis

Augusta Expo

I had the honor of attending the 2nd Annual Augusta County Fishing Expo and Flea Market on Saturday, March 15, 2014. I went expecting to learn a lot and have a great time, and I was not disappointed. I did not go expecting a Richmond Expo, for that has already had its beginning many years ago. And as with any dream, there is a starting point to build to the future.
The dream started last year and it was small, There were only 100 visitors who came out. But it was a learning experience and a building block. This year it tripled to over 350 visitors. In talking with Doug Fitzgerald, a lot was learned from this year’s event also. And next year should be even grander.
Now down to the meat of everything, the show itself. It offered the western part of the state a much needed place to showcase the talents of many small companies, those that make up the back bone of the revolution of the fishing industry. From handmade jigs, soft plastics, anchoring system, local tackle companies, to professional anglers, the show offered a variety of exhibits. And there were also many options for the non-angler, something for the wife and kids. And there was some delicious food available at a reasonable price. I had my first deep fried burger, and it was indeed delicious. Granted, there were a lot of flea market tables set up; it did offer a chance for a rare find.
The big draws were the professional anglers, Kris Johnson and John Hutchins, and the Tilted Kilt girls. The girls were beautiful, but the pros were amazing. I got to get a very up close and personal experience listening to them discuss the individual questions of the visitors. Each angler was given a hands on demo and have their questions answered. To me, that is what makes a good fishing expo. I can’t wait to see how big it has grown next year, and to get another deep fried burger.
