Louisiana High School Team Takes 10-Pound Lead In National Championship

PARIS, Tenn. — Alex Heintze and Justin Watts claim an obscure technique for their nearly 10-pound lead going into the championship round of the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by TNT Fireworks.

What they are doing on Kentucky Lake will surprise local experts and touring pros alike. With one day remaining, the details are incomplete and yet to come.

After two days of fishing, the Livingston Parish Bassmasters team has a total weight of 43 pounds, 14 ounces. The score is anchored by Thursday’s catch of 23-4 that ranks as heaviest of the tournament. In second place with 34-7 are Cole Moore and Casey Haymon of Anacoco High School in Port Arthur, La.

Heintze hinted about what they are not doing, which goes against the textbook summertime tactic for which the lake is known.

“Kentucky Lake is the No. 1 ledge fishing lake in the nation,” said Heintze, a 16-year-old junior from Baton Rouge. “That’s what just about everyone else is doing this week.”

Fishing the lake’s signature main-river channel dropoffs is not remotely part of their strategy. Take a cue from their south Louisiana roots.

“We don’t fish ledges back home because they don’t exist,” added Watts, 15, a sophomore from Baton Rouge. “We only fish in shallow water, and that’s what is working for us here, too.”

You’d never believe that after hearing the team has 10 areas where they fish, which is how the summertime rotation of ledge fishing works. The team has never explored the ledges, only making casual stops after filling limits of five bass.

“We had our limit today and yesterday by 9:30 a.m.,” Heintze admitted. “We haven’t even been to any of the other areas.”

The tactic of sticking to what works at home is paying off for another top team from Louisiana. Cade Fortenberry and Braden Blanchard of St. Amant High School, also near Baton Rouge, are in third place with 34-1.

The team caught a five-bass limit by noon, based on the strength of fishing shallow water.

“The heavy rain overnight made our water dirty, but it should improve by Saturday,” Blanchard said. “What will help is sunshine.”

They will have plenty of that on Saturday. The forecast calls for sunny skies with a high of 91 degrees.

Friday the Top 10 teams have the day off. Teams ranked 11th through 50th places will fish at Carroll County Thousand Acre Recreational Lake. The two highest finishing teams from Friday will join the Top 10 for the final day Saturday on Kentucky Lake.

The championship is the culmination of seasonal qualifying events. A record of 134 teams representing 37 states and Ontario are competing in the High School National Championship.

Teams are competing for $75,000 in scholarships and prizes. Schools participating in the B.A.S.S. Nation High School program were eligible to qualify two-angler teams for the championship. Teams also qualified through B.A.S.S. regional events and sanctioned affiliate tournament trails.

High school championship week also includes the B.A.S.S. Youth Nation Junior Championship. Friday and Saturday, the 26 teams will compete on Carroll County Thousand Acre Recreational Lake.

The weigh-in begins at 2:30 p.m. Friday in downtown Huntingdon, Tenn. The main campus of Bethel University hosts the final championship weigh-in on Saturday.

Official hosts are Paris-Henry County, Carroll County, Northwest Tennessee Tourism and Bethel University.

PLANO IS THE TITLE SPONSORSHIP FOR BASSMASTER ELITE FINALE AUG 27-30th

TITLE SPONSORSHIP FOR BASSMASTER ELITE FINALE

EFFICIENCY AND ORGANIZATION ON DISPLAY AT AUG. 27-30 BASSMASTER ELITE EVENT ON LAKE ST. CLAIR, MI

PLANO, IL (July 21, 2015) – Plano, the iconic fishing brand that has made it their mission to innovate and elevate tackle storage and organization since 1952, continues to support bass fishing at all levels – most recently through title sponsorship of the Aug. 27-30 Plano Bassmaster Elite event on Michigan’s Lake St. Clair.

The tournament is the regular season finale for bass fishing’s most prestigious tour, which, in 2015, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a schedule that commemorates some of the greatest events and venues in bass fishing history.

Widely held as one of the best smallmouth lakes in the nation, Lake St. Clair hosted the unforgettable 2013 Bassmaster Elite finale in 2013, won by Chris Lane and also sponsored by Plano. The massive, 275,000-acre, shallow lake also enjoys the distinction of being the favorite water of Plano pro and four-time Bassmaster Classic champion, Kevin VanDam (KVD).

“St. Clair is the greatest smallmouth bass fishery on the planet,” says KVD, the all-time money winner on the Bassmaster Tournament Trail. “It’s my favorite lake for both numbers of smallmouth and for trophy fish, but speed and organization are crucial if you are going to have a shot at putting together the winning bag there.”

In other words, the winning bag at the end of the Plano Bassmaster Elite on Lake St. Clair may just come down to who starts the tournament with the winning bag – the tackle bag, that is, that’s best-provisioned and organized for speed and success. Chances are, it’ll be a Plano.

“Plano is extremely pleased to be an ongoing partner with B.A.S.S. and to have the opportunity to pledge our support at the Elite level of competitive bass fishing,” says Plano-Synergy Vice President of Marketing, Pete Angle.  “It’s the ultimate arena for showcasing the advantages our tackle storage products provide… products that help both tournament and recreational anglers perform at their best on the water.”

Angle shares KVD’s enthusiasm for Lake St. Clair. “It’s definitely one of the finest fisheries out there,” he says, crediting St. Clair’s sprawling sandbars, gravel reefs, isolated rock piles, cabbage beds and abundant forage for the lake’s trophy productivity. “It’s going to be exciting to see how the best anglers in the business exploit the potential of this unique piece of water.”

In addition to KVD, bass fans should keep their eyes on Plano-sponsored Bassmaster Elite pros Stephen Browning, Brent Chapman, Brent Ehrler, Chad Morgenthaler and John Murray when they roll into Detroit to compete at the end of August.

Humminbird® Awarded Fifth Consecutive ICAST Win

Humminbird® Awarded Fifth Consecutive ICAST Win

Humminbird® HELIX 7® voted ICAST 2015 “Best of Electronics” by dealers and outdoors media

Eufaula, Al. (July 22, 2015) – According to recently-released statistics from the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), ICAST 2015 shattered all previous attendance records, drawing nearly 13,000 sportfishing industry professionals to Orlando, Florida, July 14-17.

One of the most anticipated events of each ICAST is the New Product Showcase, sponsored by Fishing Tackle Retailer, which rewards innovation through “Best of Show” new product competition. Voted on by outdoors media and buyers, winning products often reveal industry trends well ahead of marketplace movements.

And this year – for the fifth year in a row – Humminbird® took top honors in the show’s Electronics category, as the attending community of dealers and outdoors media voted the new Humminbird HELIX 7 the best example of fishing electronics for 2015.

Let’s recap the past five years:

2011: Humminbird’s 1158c DI Combo earns the popular vote.

2012: 360 Imaging™ follows suit as the biggest thing since the introduction of Side Imaging®.

2013:  Bow 360 is championed for bringing around-the-boat underwater imaging to boat bows.

2014: Humminbird’s ONIX® Series takes top honors.

2015: Humminbird’s HELIX 7 is crowned “Best of Electronics” for it’s ultra-bright, nearly glare-free screen and top technologies at a real-world price.

The accolades are always well received, but Humminbird remains focused on creating technologies like patented Side Imaging®, LakeMaster™ cartography and 360 Imaging® that help anglers find and catch more fish.

This year’s win may be the most satisfying yet for the Eufaula, Alabama-based company and the overall marketplace.

“Our goal was to combine our leading-edge technologies with solutions to the real-world problems anglers and boaters face each day on the water. The result is a bigger, brighter, nearly glare-free screen with numerous proven, fish-catching features and innovation at these price points,” says Jeff Kolodzinski, Brand Manager, Humminbird®.

Kolodzinski continues: “This is a profound achievement for our entire team – from engineering to our American manufacturing to customer service. It really underscores where we are headed as a company, bringing anglers what they want: units that are easier to use and that help them catch more fish.”

Along those lines, anglers and boaters can choose exactly the HELIX 7 that is right for how they fish, whether that means a sonar-only unit all the way up to the full complement of Side Imaging®, Down Imaging®, Dual-Beam Sonar with SwitchFire®, and chartplotting. HELIX 7 is also compatible with Humminbird® LakeMaster® AutoChart® and AutoChart® PRO, which make real-time user-generated high-definition mapping possible, no upload to a server or cloud required.

Bigger, Healthier Smallmouth Await Elite Series Pros At St. Lawrence River

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Brandon Palaniuk will be one of 108 competitors at the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite at the St. Lawrence River out of Waddington, N.Y., July 30-Aug. 2. Palaniuk took home top honors in 2013 when he won his second Elite event on the same fishery.

Bigger, Healthier Smallmouth Await Elite Series Pros At St. Lawrence River

[print_link]

WADDINGTON, N.Y. — After making stops on some of the finest largemouth bass fisheries in the United States, the Bassmaster Elite Series is shifting to a fishery known for its hefty smallmouth population for the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River.

Thanks to the continued growth of a foreign forage species — the round goby — the Elites should find the St. Lawrence smallmouth healthier than ever.

“The smallmouth bass in that region have grown so much because of the goby invasion,” said Russ McCullough, regional fisheries biologist for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. “Studies have shown that gobies now make up about 80 percent of the diet for smallmouth. While they can be problematic in some ways, gobies are great forage for all of our predators, including bass.”

Gobies — a fish species with a maximum length of about 10 inches — were first identified in the St. Lawrence River during the late 1990s. Their population has exploded since then, giving bass an extra food source and tournament bass anglers something else to imitate while fishing.

It is believed gobies made their way into the St. Lawrence through ballast water introductions by ships using the river as a navigation corridor from Asia, Europe and other destinations around the world.

“Large ships often carry millions of gallons of ballast water that is taken from coastal ports and transported to next port of call,” McCullough said. “So at some point, it’s likely one of them exchanged their ballast water into the system somewhere, and those fish were in there.”

The last time the Bassmaster Elite Series visited Waddington, N.Y., in August 2013, a few of the pros made round-trip boat rides of more than 200 miles each day to the vast and sometimes turbulent waters of Lake Ontario. Idaho angler Brandon Palaniuk was among those who committed to the long daily run, and he won the event with a four-day weight of 88 pounds, 12 ounces. The 2013 event also set the all-time attendance record for an Elite Series event with more than 34,000 people in attendance.

This time, many of the areas that helped determine the winner of the 2013 event will be off-limits.

Tournament waters will include the St. Lawrence River and all rivers, creeks and canals connecting to the river and Lake Ontario. Boundaries will be the Moses-Saunders Power Dam to the east, the mouth of Lake Ontario to the west and the Tibbett Point Association Boat Ramp to the southwest.

“Having the off-limits and not being able to go out into Lake Ontario will make it a lot more controllable and more competitive for everybody,” said Alabama angler and 2014 Bassmaster Classic champion Randy Howell. “The St. Lawrence River is huge, and there’s plenty of fish from one end of the river all the way to the lake. That’ll make it the kind of tournament anybody can win.”

Howell said the rule will also make the tournament safer.

“I’m glad we have the off-limits rule because the lake is so rough and dangerous,” Howell said. “With all of us having marshals in the boat, you never know what could happen. This will be a better format.”

Wherever anglers go on the massive fishery, staying in the area of the gobies will be crucial. Gobies are found most often around rockpiles, shoals and dropoffs in depths of 20 to 50 feet.

“The last time we were there, two years ago, the place was just flooded with gobies everywhere,” Howell said. “You can tell that’s what makes the smallmouth stay big and fat and healthy, and that seemed to be the key to success in finding the big ones. Find the gobies, and you’ll find fish.”

Howell said even those anglers who don’t find enough fish to win will have a blast catching big smallmouth, and everyone should learn something before the week is over.

“It’ll be a great tournament for catching fish and for building confidence and learning about smallmouth,” Howell said. “We only get to fish good smallmouth fisheries every couple of years, and a tournament like this helps us all get better.”

Competition will be held Thursday through Sunday, July 30-Aug. 2, with daily takeoffs at 6:15 a.m. ET from Whittaker Park Boat Launch and weigh-ins back at the park each day at 3:15 p.m.

The Elite Series Expo will have B.A.S.S. sponsor representatives onsite throughout the weekend with activities, games and prizes for attendees. All of the family-friendly activities planned throughout the weekend are free and open to the public.

What Your Boat’s Emergency Kit Should Contain – Fishidy.com

What Your Boat’s Emergency Kit Should Contain

Going out on a boat can be fun, but it can be dangerous and so it is important to put safety first. Aside from PFDs and lifejackets, you should also have an emergency kit ready and available in an easy to reach area in case it is needed at a moment’s notice. Getting everything ready prior to going out on the water should be a priority when organizing a boating or fishing trip, with enough supplies for each person coming along.

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit should be the first thing that you get when preparing your emergency kit. If something was to happen while you were out on the water, it is imperative that you deal with it in a serious manner as it is harder to get medical attention when you are miles away from land. Having a full first aid kit will ensure that you are prepared for anything that could happen.

first-aid-kit

What Should Be in Your First Aid Kit?

  • bandages with different sizes
  • gauze
  • crepe bandage roll
  • butterfly clips
  • hypoallergenic tape
  • sterile wipes
  • antiseptic liquid
  • burn gel
  • antibiotic ointment
  • small, stainless steel scissors (to avoid them getting rusty in salt water)
  • tweezers
  • swiss army knife
  • gloves (preferably not latex in case someone has an allergy)
  • pain killers (mixture of paracetamol and ibuprofen)
  • motion sickness tablets

Other Items You Should Have Onboard in Case of Emergency:

Flashlight & Extra Batteries

In case you are stuck on the water over night, it is a good idea to have a flashlight to see.

  • Test the flashlight before going out.
  • Keep your extra batteries in a water tight container to avoid corrosion.
  • Flashlights can also be used as a signalling device to alert people to your position.

Fire Extinguisher

Due to the amount of flammable items on a boat, it is important to be prepared for fires. Having a fire extinguisher is important to boating safety so that if a fire does occur, you can put it out completely.

  • Have a fire extinguisher available in an easy to reach spot.
  • Make sure that you do maintenance on it prior to going out on the water.
  • Decrease the chances of fires by checking your fuel lines, and ventilating your boat prior to going out.

Non-perishable Food

Non-perishable food items include canned and dried food items, that don’t go off until after you open then. If you are stuck on a boat for an indeterminate amount of time, having non-perishable food will be a life saver.

  • Have enough for each person planning on coming on the trip.
  • Make sure you ration it out in a smart manner so that you don’t run out.
  • Make sure that you a bring a can opener.

Radio Device

In case of an emergency where you may require help, having a radio device is imperative to being able to people that can help. Radio devices can be connected to the boat or an individual handheld one.

  • Know what is the channel to reach emergency services prior to going out on the water, this changes in different parts of the world, so make sure that you have the relevant one.
  • Get the radio serviced before going out on the water.
  • Test the radio before going out to ensure that it works and charge it if it’s a handhold radio.

Shock Blanket

If someone falls overboard, it is important to get them out of the water and warm them up to avoid hypothermia. Shock blankets are a great way to do this as they are insulated to hold in heat and provide psychological comfort to a person in shock.

  • Have enough blankets for each person on board in case of catastrophic instances.
  • Keep the blankets in a safe place, away from the edge of the boat to avoid them falling in.
  • If needed, make sure that you wrap the blanket completely around them as they may not be capable of doing this themselves.

Make sure you have your emergency kit ready well before your plan to go out on the water. Doing this will ensure you and your group’s safety. The main things to remember when out on the water is to be safe and have fun.

Louisiana Team Leads High School National Championship

PARIS, Tenn. — Justin Watts and Alex Heintze of the Livingston Parish Bassmasters had only five bites Wednesday on Kentucky Lake, but the bites came quick and early.

The resulting catch weighing 20 pounds, 10 ounces has the anglers from Baton Rouge, La., in the lead at the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by TNT Fireworks.

The early success influenced the anglers to abandon their hot spot on the lake at 10:30 a.m., with the idea of saving it for tomorrow.

“The day went as we planned,” Watts said. “We just decided to go look for other similar areas.”

“Our primary area is about 300 yards long, so we wanted to find more water so we can start there tomorrow, do the same thing over again,” Heintze added.

That was a good idea, considering the second-place team of Matt Shirley and Cade Barnes are in easy striking distance of the lead. The team, from Tuscaloosa County High School in Alabama, finished the day with a weight of 20 pounds.

They, too, had an early bite that resonated with fishing successes of the top teams.

“We have about 20 spots and two different patterns going for us,” Shirley said.

He did not disclose bait details, but the one-two punch involves a reaction lure, followed up by a finesse fishing bait.

“Once we find the sweet spot of where the bass are holding, we can slow down and hone in on them,” Barnes said.

The best scenario for the team is to have most of those spots still saved from practice.

“Today we didn’t get to all of our fishing spots, so we have plenty of water,” Barnes added.

That can be good and bad on this fishery. During summer, a majority of the best bass fishing happens offshore. The bass favor the river-generated current that provides cooler water and attracts baitfish. The bass follow the food, meaning success hinges on being at the right place, at the right time.

Ben Muse and Taylor Cox of Carrollton High School in Texas are in third place with 19 pounds. Cox and Morgan Winegardner of Maryland are the only two females competing in the tournament.

The championship is the culmination of a season of qualifying events held throughout the U.S. and Canada. A record number of B.A.S.S.-affiliated high schools are competing in the championship — 132 qualified teams representing 37 states and Ontario.

Thursday the tournament field is cut to the Top 10 teams. Those ranked 11th through 50th will fish on Friday at Carroll County Thousand Acre Recreational Lake. The objective is to provide a second qualifying chance while bringing another level of competition to the event. The two highest finishing teams join the Top 10 for the final day Saturday on Kentucky Lake.

Thursday’s launch will take place at Paris Landing State Park at 5:30 a.m. CT. The weigh-in will take place at the same location at 1:45 p.m.

Teams are competing for $75,000 in scholarships and prizes. Schools participating in the B.A.S.S. Nation High School Nation program were eligible to qualify two-angler teams for the championship.

High school championship week includes the B.A.S.S. Youth Nation Junior Championship. On Friday, junior teams compete in a qualifying round at Carroll County Thousand Acre Recreational Lake. On Saturday, the teams fish on Kentucky Lake with the high school finalists. The B.A.S.S. Youth Nation is designed to seed the high school program.

Official hosts are Paris-Henry County, Carroll County, Northwest Tennessee Tourism and Bethel University.

FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE FINALE SET FOR CHAUTAUQUA LAKE

FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE FINALE SET FOR CHAUTAUQUA LAKE

[print_link]

CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. (July 21, 2015) – FLW College Fishing is headed to Lake Chautauqua August 1 for the third and final regular-season stop of 2015 in the Northern Conference. A full field of college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the Northern Conference Championship tournament.
“Lake Chautauqua is a beautiful lake,” said Ohio State University angler Brett Warrick, who along with partner Sidney Hoover won the FLW College Fishing event on Lake Chautauqua last season. “It’s surrounded by hills and woods and is a very scenic area. There are a lot of docks and grass, and I think they both will play a role for anglers in this tournament.
“The very northern end or very southern end of the lake seem to be the most popular areas to fish,” Warrick continued. “On the northern end, you’ve got docks all over. On the southern end there are a few docks, but that is where you find the majority of the grass and lily pads to work with, along with the Chadakoin River.”
Warrick said that the key for college anglers in this tournament would be their timing – getting on the right docks or grass areas at the right times when the bigger bass are moving in.
“You’ve got to be there at the right time because they are moving in and out all day long,” Warrick said. “Most of our fish last year came from 4 feet of water or less. We won the tournament using a jig and a weightless worm. I think those will still be popular baits, but teams are also going to catch them on spinnerbaits and frogs.
“Our winning total of 17 pounds last year was pretty average,” Warrick went on to say. “I think that the winning team this year will have more – 17 to 21 pounds.”
Anglers will take off from Long Point State Park located at 4459 Route 430 in Bemus Point, N.Y., at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the State Park beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.
Schools competing in the Lake Chautauqua tournament, which is hosted by Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau, include:
Adrian College – Caleb Taylor, Zionsville, Ind., and Jacob Bayer, Westfield, Mich.
Adrian College – Jarrett Martin, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Jeff Morton, Troy, Mich.
Adrian College – Nickolas Marsh, Commerce Township, Mich., and Zack Nelson, Northville, Mich.
Albertus Magnus College – Landon Holl and John Barrickman, both of Green, Ohio
Bryant University – Zachary Jendrysik, Agawan, Mass., and Douglas Remick, Wrentham, Mass.

RAYOVAC FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION EVENT SET FOR LAKE CHAMPLAIN

RAYOVAC FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION EVENT SET FOR LAKE CHAMPLAIN

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (July 21, 2015) – The Rayovac FLW Series is headed to Lake Champlain July 30- Aug. 1 for a tournament presented by Plano when as many as 300 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the second stop of 2015 in the Northern Division.
“Lake Champlain is known for its massive smallmouth and largemouth populations, and either one of them could win the tournament,” said 13-year Walmart FLW Tour veteran Dave Lefebre of Erie, Pennsylvania, who finished third in this event last year. “I fish differently every time I go to Champlain. I usually get two days of practice in before the event, and I’ll spend one of them up north and one of them making the long run south to Ticonderoga. I really try to keep an open mind.”
Lefebre said that about half of the final 10 anglers fishing last year were making the roughly 70-mile southern run to Ticonderoga.
“It kind of seems that way every year,” Lefebre explained. “The field tends to split up. If you’re going to Ti, you’re fishing 100-percent for largemouth. But the largemouth are pretty good up on the north end, too. Both ends of the lake are real good for targeting largemouth, and everything in between is mostly smallmouth.
“The wind could definitely be a factor in this tournament,” Lefebre continued. “If the wind picks up, Champlain can get real bad, real quick. So you don’t want to put all of your eggs in one basket, especially if you’re planning to make the long run south.”
Lefebre said that typical northern largemouth and smallmouth baits would be in play – jerkbaits, topwater baits, tubes and drop-shot rigs would all be popular with anglers targeting smallmouth, while jigs, frogs and worms will be baits of choice by competitors opting to target largemouth.
“I think the weights will be up a little bit from last year,” Lefebre went on to say. “We’re a few weeks later in the year, so I think we will see the fish set up more in their summertime patterns. I predict a three-day winning total of 60 pounds should win this event.”
Anglers will take off from the Dock Street Landing located at 5 Dock St., in Plattsburgh, New York, at 6 a.m. each day. Weigh-in will be held at the landing on all three days of competition, beginning at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public. The event is being hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.
Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z117 with 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.
The Rayovac FLW Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeast, Texas and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points in each division that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Rayovac FLW Series Championship. The 2015 Rayovac FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 29-31 on the Ohio River in Paducah, Kentucky.
