The House Passes Legislation Supporting Outdoors by: Jason Sealock

The House of Representatives, in a bipartisan vote, passed the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act, SHARE Act (H.R. 3590). While in the Senate, Sens. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) introduced the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2014 (S. 1996). Both packages support increased access for recreational opportunities across the nation as well as the protection of our fishing and shooting heritage.

“The bipartisan vote in the House and bipartisan set of sponsors in the Senate highlight how conservation issues that impact sportsmen and women can cut through partisan politics,” said American Sportfishing Association (ASA) Vice President Gordon Robertson.

Hite hangs tight on Okeechobee – FLW Outdoors

Hite hangs tight on Okeechobee

Tougher day still has Arizona pro on top by 12-3

08.Feb.2014 by Kyle Wood

CLEWISTON, Fla. – The first two days of competition on Lake Okeechobee saw numerous bags of 20-plus pounds brought in to the scales. Today, however, seemed to reflect more of traditional Saturday on the Big O where the fish go into hiding from the amount of pressure the receive each weekend. Despite lower catches, Brett Hite still clings to what is now a 12-pound, 3-ounce lead heading into the final day.

“The fishing is really day to day out here,” said the Phoenix, Ariz., resident. “It’s hard to say when the fish will bite or won’t. We had about the same conditions as the first day, so I thought they would bite a lot better.”

Hite has been mentioning all week that he has two patterns he could rely on depending on the conditions. His primary pattern has carried him so far, but today he had to fall back to plan B.

“I fished my main area all morning until about 11 o’clock and had one decent fish and three little ones,” Hite explained. “I got a feeling today that something wasn’t right and when that happens it helps to have something to fall back on, luckily I did. I had a voice in my head that told me to change. I wasn’t seeing the size or numbers from the primary patter so I made the change.”

When an angler experiences being in the “groove” everything falls into place for them. It is almost as if they can do no wrong. Hite has been to that level before back in 2008 when he won his first Walmart FLW Tour event on Lake Toho by over 20 pounds. He then headed west to fish another tour-level event on the California Delta where he caught over 100 pounds of bass to claim back-to-back titles. The way Hite is fishing this week eerily resembles his performance from then.

“Fishing my backup pattern wasn’t what I wanted to do today but it worked out. I am just so comfortable out there and know what I want to do and how I want to catch them that I feel right.”

Hite continues to remain quiet about his two patterns but says that they are stark contrasts to each other. His main pattern brought bags of 34-15 and 23-8 from days one and two, respectively, while today saw his weight drop to 15-12. His three-day total stands at 74-3 as he looks to wrap up his second FLW Tour victory tomorrow.

“Tomorrow I still plan to start on my main primary spot. The sunny and slick conditions out there hurt me today. I know there are fish in that area still – lots of them – but they just didn’t want to bite today. If I don’t like what I’m seeing from there I will go back to my secondary pattern if I feel that’s what I need to do.”

Andrew Young ekes out victory at Amistad

DEL RIO, Texas — Minnesota angler Andy Young topped the hard-charging Stephen Browning to win the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on Lake Amistad by a mere ounce.

The day started with Young in second place behind Shreveport, La., angler Randy Allen, who has a ranch 25 miles north of Del Rio and frequently fishes Amistad.

“I thought I was fishing for second,” said Young.

“The local hammer (Allen) had 18-pounds each day and I was about 11 pounds behind so I just went out and did the best I could.”

The best he could do ended up being a 13-pound, 10-ounce limit that gave Young the winning total of 39-6. While Allen caught only one keeper and dropped to third place with 37-12, Browning caught the heaviest limit of the day (14-6) and climbed into second with 39-5.

“This is a lifelong dream,” said Young of his victory and qualifying for the 2015 Bassmaster Classic if he fishes the two remaining Central Opens.

Hite halfway home – 2014 FLW Tour on Okeechobee – FLW Communications

Arizona pro distancing himself with lead of 12-9

CLEWISTON, Fla. – Brett Hite has found success on Okeechobee in the past but never to the extent he is experiencing this week. The Phoenix, Ariz., pro is keeping the momentum rolling as he busted 23 pounds, 8 ounces today to take a commanding lead to the tune of 12-9 that he will carry into day three.

While his day-two limit was substantially less than yesterday – over 10 pounds less – Hite is comfortable and confident with his pattern.

“Things have been going right for me this week,” said Hite. “I’m feeling relaxed and fishing the way I like. Nothing has really bothered me. I have a lot of boats fishing near me but I just tune them out.”

For years Hite has spent his time on the water watching media boats fly by in search of the Randall Tharps and JT Kenneys paying little respect to him. He knew that one day his pattern would produce when the time is right, and that time is now.

“There are a lot of people not fishing the same style or pattern that I am,” continued Hite. “I’m really keying in on a specific thing that I think is helping me get those bigger bites.

“I still have some spots saved that I haven’t fished. I’m not saying they are my best spots, but I have caught some of my bigger fish from areas I didn’t think were that good. But I’m looking for places I call a salad bowl which is just a big clump of all different kinds of grass. When you find one there are big numbers of fish in it.”

Hite says these “salad bowls” consist of anything from eel grass to hydrilla and anything else you can find on Okeechobee. He has waypoints in these certain areas that he focuses on but hasn’t quite figured out what is holding the bass on the particular spot.

“You can go down a stretch to your waypoint and catch one right off it and leave. If you come back a little while later you can catch another one or even a few from that same area. It’s crazy how it replenishes. I don’t know what holds them there but it is something specific they like.”

The morning (usually one of the better bite windows) started off a little slower for Hite which he attributes to the cloud cover early in the day. He says that there is generally a lull from 10 to 1 o’clock before the fish fire back up in the afternoon.

Hite is still tight-lipped about his presentations but is using three or four different baits to catch his fish.

His two-day total weight stands at 58-7 putting him well on his way to hit the century mark this week.

Allen does it again at Amistad – by: BASS Communications

DEL RIO, Texas — Bookend 18-pound limits for two days has put Randy Allen in the driver’s seat at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on Lake Amistad.

The former Bassmaster Elite Series pro backed up Thursday’s 18-pound limit with an 18-3 limit Friday to retain the lead in the pro division with 36-3. “It’s just been one of those weeks and when it is your time, it is your time,” said Allen, who knows he has to keep up the pace because of Amistad’s reputation.

“Saturday, you could see 20-pound sacks come in and I just hope I can hang in there with them.”

This morning Allen was unfazed by the pressure of leading the event.

“I just thought it was incredible to be in first,” he said. “It was the first time it has ever happened to me so I just wanted to go out and have fun and go catch fish. I had no reason to get upset and stressed out over it.”
