AMERICAN HERO FINDS NEW CAREER AS PROFESSIONAL ANGLER RETIRED U.S. ARMY SERGEANT MAJOR JAMEY CALDWELL JOINS PLANO SYNERGY PRO STAFF

Plano, IL (May 19, 2015) – Plano Synergy, parent company to the time-trusted Plano and Frabill fishing tackle brands, is proud to announce the addition of retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major Jamey Caldwell to their Pro Staff.

“Jamey exudes excellence and honor in his personal life, his accomplished military career, and in his fishing,” says Plano Synergy Marketing and Pro Staff Coordinator, Justina Whalen.  “We appreciate those attributes and are thrilled to be partnering with Jamey in his new career as a professional angler.”

A resident of Carthage, North Carolina, Caldwell is beginning a new chapter in his life as a tournament bass angler after retiring in December of 2014 from 21 years of service to our country; the first seven as a U.S. Army Ranger, and the last 14 in an Elite Special Operations unit at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.  Caldwell has been deployed 14 times for combat operations throughout his distinguished military career and has been honored with eight Bronze Stars (two with Valor), three Defense Meritorious Service Medals, one Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Commendation Medals (one with Valor), 16 other medals and 11 other awards.

“Jamey’s training and work experience in conditions that are unimaginable to us as civilians make him uniquely qualified to succeed in any environment he chooses to work,” says Plano Synergy Director of Marketing, Ben Rand, who has the greatest confidence in Caldwell’s ability to win while serving as an inspirational ambassador for the Plano and Frabill brands.

“We’re really excited about helping to support Jamey and his dream of competing as a professional angler,” adds Rand.  “In addition to being a great guy, few other competitive anglers have the unique combination of ingenuity, drive and commitment that Jamey possesses.”

Caldwell humbly acknowledges that his hard-earned skill set will be a major plus on the water.  “While serving in Special Operations, I was placed into situations few others would ever want to be in,” says Caldwell, who has been trained to excel in bad conditions and points to his mental toughness as a likely key to success in his professional fishing career.  “I was also given the best possible tools to do my job,” he adds.  “Now, Plano and Frabill will be giving me the effective and functional tools I’ll need to stay organized and efficient on the water.  I can’t think of another company I’d rather be working with.”

Caldwell will help spread the word about Plano and Frabill products while on tour this season, as well as through his extensive social media reach.  He is fishing the BASS Southern and Northern Opens this season with the primary goal of qualifying for 2016 BASS Elite Series and will also appear at the Plano / Frabill booth at the upcoming 2015 ICAST Show, July 15-17 in Orlando, Florida.

Zippo Becomes Title Sponsor Of BASSfest

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The inaugural BASSfest held last year was a hit with anglers and fans, and the unique competition returns next month with a new title sponsor.

The Zippo BASSfest at Kentucky Lake presented by A.R.E. Truck Caps will be June 3-7 in Paris, Tenn. The B.A.S.S. partnership allows Zippo to align its outdoor brands with the popular Bassmaster Elite Series event as a title sponsor.

“Zippo is extremely proud to sponsor BASSfest on beautiful Kentucky Lake,” said Chris Funk, Zippo marketing product manager – outdoor. “BASSfest’s combination of fishing, family and festival is the perfect opportunity to bring Zippo’s line of outdoor products to people who love being outdoors. “

He added, “Renowned for our lighters, Zippo is taking our 83-year legacy of the flame to the great outdoors. Be sure to check out our new Zippo All-Terrain Grill and sample some delicious food.”

Last season’s BASSfest at Chickamauga Lake was a first for the Bassmaster Elite Series. The five-day tournament evolved as an extended opportunity for fans to gather during a weeklong, summertime event. The combination of competition and festival proved a big hit.

“BASSfest is quickly becoming one of the most popular and exciting events of the year in Bassmaster competition, and we are pleased that Zippo has decided to take advantage of that fact by becoming its title sponsor,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “This decision also reinforces the fact that bass fishing fans are avid outdoors people who enjoy camping and cooking outdoors, in addition to fishing.”

This year’s BASSfest follows up with an enhanced fan experience and higher stakes for the pro anglers.

Invited to compete are the Top 10 points leaders from each of the three divisions in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Series presented by Allstate. Also under the new format, Bassmaster Elite Series anglers will earn Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points based on their finishes in the tournament.

Two popular aspects of the original format remain. On Friday, fans have the opportunity to interact with the pros during Bassmaster University, special seminars on a variety of fishing topics. Also on Friday, the Second Chance Tournament returns at nearby Lake Barkley. Each angler below 50th place on Thursday has the chance to advance to the finals on Saturday and Sunday and earn at least $10,000, if they finish in the Top 10 of the second chance round.

FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE FINALE SET FOR LAKE HARTWELL – May 19,2015

FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE FINALE SET FOR LAKE HARTWELL

[print_link]

HARTWELL, Ga. (May 19, 2015) – FLW College Fishing is headed to Lake Hartwell May 30 for the third and final regular-season stop in the Southeastern Conference. A full field of college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the Southeastern Conference Championship tournament.
“There’s going to be a few different options for anglers on Lake Hartwell this time of year,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro and reigning Forrest Wood Cup champion Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, South Carolina. “That’s what makes tournaments in early summer like this so exciting.
“The postspawn bite will be the strongest, but I’ve seen late spawners up shallow on the lower end of the lake in the past,” continued Gagliardi. “I think the postspawn fish will be feeding on herring and offshore fishing is going to play a major role in this tournament. Anglers will also find some fish up shallow around docks that haven’t moved out deep yet. Drop-shotting points and using Carolina-rigs on the main lake will be very popular as well.
“As for baits, I see competitors using green-pumpkin-colored Zoom Finesse Worms, six-inch Zoom Trick Worms and possibly even football-head jigs,” said Gagliardi. “Topwater baits and Zoom Super Flukes will do well with the offshore fish that are feeding. I’ve done well in the past with natural colors and slightly darker colors like watermelon seed.”
When asked what he thought a winning weight would be, Gagliardi predicted the victors will bring a five-bass limit nearing 19 pounds to the scale.
“If I were to fish the lake today, that’s the amount of weight I’d want in my livewell,” Gagliardi said.
Anglers will take off from the Gum Branch Park ramp located on Vanna Waller Road in Hartwell at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the marina beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (May 18, 2015) – Tim Wilson of Gas City, Indiana, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 29 pounds, 10 ounces Saturday to win the fourth Walmart Bass Fishing League Choo Choo Division tournament of 2015 on Lake Guntersville. For his victory, Wilson earned $5,584.
Saturday was probably the best day of fishing I’ve ever had,” said Wilson. “I was able to fire up a couple different schools and catch a ton of keepers.”
Wilson said he focused on three key ledges off of a Tennessee River channel in 17 to 25 feet of water.
“I caught my fish using a sexy shad-colored Scottsboro Tackle swimbait, a custom crawfish-colored football-head jig and my bigger fish on a Nichols Lures Ben Parker Magnum Spoon,” Wilson said. “When these schools are this active I’d make a cast and have a bite before the bait hit the bottom.”
Wilson said that while the majority of his fish came deep from the ledges, he also targeted two cuts in the banks of the lake.
“I probably caught at least forty keepers throughout the day,” Wilson said. “It killed me to throw back five pounders but they weren’t doing me any good. I just couldn’t believe the flurries that I hit.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

MONTICELLO, Ky. (May 18, 2015) – Dwight Fox of Gainesboro, Tennessee, weighed four bass totaling 16 pounds, 2 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League Mountain Division tournament of 2015 on Lake Cumberland. For his victory, Fox earned $4,463.
“During practice I looked for stained water in the flats and found some good spots, so that’s what I focused on during the tournament,” said Fox, who also won a Walmart BFL event last weekend on Center Hill Lake in Sparta, Tennessee. “I could only see only two or three feet down, so it was ideal.”
Fox said he caught a couple keeper bass early in the day on a shad-colored Heddon Zara Spook but had to switch baits around 8:45 a.m.
“I concentrated on four different spots towards the northern end of the lake,” said Fox. “I’d go over them with a green-pumpkin-colored Zoom Brush Hog and if I didn’t get a bite I’d go back over it with a jig rigged with a green-pumpkin-colored Zoom Super Chunk.
“I could get in closer with the jig and the Brush Hog,” Fox continued. “I’d just hop it around a little down there and soon I’d feel the bite. They ended up producing some nice fish.”
Fox said he caught approximately 10 keepers during the tournament.
“I’m old fashioned in the fact that I’ve fished the same baits for over 30 years,” Fox said.
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Dwight Fox, Gainesboro, Tenn., four bass, 16-2, $4,463
2nd:         Jonathan Green, East Bernstadt, Ky., five bass, 15-8, $2,232

Meredith spent his day working mid-lake areas between Horse Creek and Honey Creek. Starting south, he threw a Carolina-rigged Sooner Run-colored Gene Larew Biffle Bug and caught his first keeper early.
“After that I moved on to two deep points and quickly caught a limit of small keepers,” said Meredith. “My boat sat in 35 to 40 feet of water while I casted into about 18 feet.”
Around 10:30 a.m. Meredith figured he would need bigger fish to win. Still using the Biffle Bug, he switched strategies and began to flip the steep rocky bluffs, banks and docks as he worked his way up to Honey Creek.
“Anywhere I could find steep bluff walls I knew the fish would be heading out into the lake from the coves,” said Meredith. “I started culling a lot after targeting the new spots. Two of my biggest fish – both 5-pounders – came from underneath docks.”
Meredith said he caught around 25 keepers over the course of the day.
“My key to winning was realizing early in the day that I couldn’t win it out deep and that I had to move to those bluff walls for the big fish,” Meredith said. “Thankfully I didn’t hesitate any longer.”

MCCORMICK, S.C. (May 18, 2015) – Brian Tidwell of Seneca, South Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 11 ounces Saturday to win the fourth Walmart Bass Fishing League South Carolina Division tournament of 2015 on Clarks Hill Lake. For his victory, Tidwell earned $3,021.
“There’s lot of talent in this division so winning is a big accomplishment for me,” said Tidwell. “I’ve fished a lot of FLW events before, but have never won one. I couldn’t be happier with how my day turned out.”
Tidwell said he focused on lower-lake clay points, in 10- to 15-foot depths, near the Clarks Hill Dam.
“Of the 20 points that I hit, there were six that really fired so I spent my day rotating through them,” said Tidwell. “I lost a 5- and 3-pounder around 8:45 a.m. and thought I was out of contention already.”
Tidwell said that he recovered and caught his winning stringer on a Carolina-rigged green-pumpkin Zoom Trick Worm. Around 2:00 p.m., he fired up a school and caught a 3-pound kicker on a chrome-colored Heddon Zara Spook to secure his win. Tidwell said he ended up catching a total of eight fish.
“The key was slowing down and using the Carolina-rigged Trick Worm. Other anglers were throwing topwater baits but I knew they were too fast for this time of the season,” concluded Tidwell.

CELINA, Ohio (May 18, 2015) – Gary Ginter of Maplewood, Ohio, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 13 pounds, 4 ounces Saturday to win the first Walmart Bass Fishing League Buckeye Division tournament of 2015 on Grand Lake. For his victory, Ginter earned $3,963.
“I’m a local guy who grew up fishing this lake so to win is very special for me,” said Ginter.
Ginter said he started his day flipping a June Bug-colored Zoom Brush Hog to bedding fish along mid-lake seawalls.
“I managed to catch four keeper bass in the morning by 7 a.m. so that was a great start,” said Ginter. “I kept moving around the area looking for a big one and boated a couple of good ones.”
Around 9 a.m., Ginter ran to a few spots on the western end of the lake and culled three more fish by 10 o’ clock.
“I caught a 3-pounder up in Prairie Creek but I knew that I’d need bigger fish to win, so I headed back to my primary spot on the seawall,” Ginter said.
This time around, Ginter used a silver Rapala No. 7 Shad Rap to imitate the shad spawning along the walls.
“I was parallel with the wall and making the Shad Rap bounce off the bottom,” Ginter said. “This technique was triggering the fish and I caught five more before heading to the scale. I caught 14 keepers during the tournament so it was a very productive day.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
