Sale Creek Secures Bassmaster High School National Championship On Chickamauga

DAYTON, Tenn. — Gage King and Banks Shaw of Sale Creek High School defended their home-lake advantage Saturday, landing three bass that weighed 20-11 to win the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors with a three-day total of 45-6.

Shaw and King earned a $5,000 scholarship as well as the $2,000 Hunter Owens Big Bag of the Tournament scholarship presented by the parents of Hunter Owens, a former high school angler who died in a car crash. Drury University, Bryan College and Bethel University also presented the winners with scholarship opportunities to their respective schools.

Hayes White and Tiger Manuel from Sulphur High School in Louisiana finished second with 39-5, and the Backwoods Bassin’ team of John Nutt and Carter Nutt earned third with 37-9.

“This is the best thing that has ever happened to me, to be honest with you,” King said. “People don’t understand how hard fishing really is until you get out here and do it and do it all year. On our home lake, we had to put it together and figure it out. We know the fish that are there, it’s just timing when you can get them to bite.”

Shaw and King started the tournament with a disappointing 8-2, but they battled back on Day 2 and caught 16-9 to jump into fourth place and secure their spot in the championship round.

“We went home beating our heads in, thinking, ‘We are overthinking this. We just have to go fish,’” King said. “We tried something new and it ended up working for us.”

Along with some grassy areas, the Sale Creek team targeted springs on Chickamauga, using a jig, drop shot and a magnum spoon to trigger bites. Most of their weight on Day 2 and their 6-pounder on Day 3 were caught on the spoon.

“It’s something you can get to that is a little more sneaky,” Shaw said. “The fish load in it, and a lot of times there’s a lot bigger fish. They don’t get as much pressure as they do on ledges. It is something I have always done and you can go there and get bit quick.”

Shaw added that without Garmin LiveScope, the team wouldn’t have weighed in most of the bass they caught this week.

“It was one of those deals where he was watching them and I was right there with the net and as soon as he stuck one, I was right there,” King said.

When Shaw arrived at Dayton Boat Dock on Championship Saturday, however, he said he had a ‘gut feeling’ that he and King needed to try a spot they hadn’t fished all week.

“It’s so tough right now and hard to stay consistent,” Shaw said. “You need to run new water. We started on a place we hadn’t fished all week. We caught an 8-5 and caught our third-biggest one.

“That got the momentum going for sure. At that moment, I knew if we could put two more 3-pounders in the boat we had a good shot. I had already beaten my goal for the day.”

From there, Shaw and King moved through several different grassy areas of the lake, filling their limit and catching multiple 4-pound fish, none of which helped their cause. Toward the end of the day, however, they moved back to the spring where they caught several big fish Friday and landed a 6-13 largemouth, pushing their bag over 20 pounds.

White and Manuel jumped from seventh to second on the final day thanks to a 16-pound bag, the second largest of Championship Saturday. Although they normally spend their time fishing shallow on their home lakes of Toledo Bend and the Sabine River, the Sulphur High duo fished out of their comfort zone this week, focusing their efforts on a hump around a bluff wall they found on the first day.

“We tried to start with topwater, but when the sun came up we went and fished a deep bluff bank,” Manuel said. “We were fishing the bank and we looked down at the graph and there was a school of big ones there. We had 12 pounds the first day from that.”

Once they located the school, they fished it every day of the tournament, mainly using a drop shot, a technique they seldom use back home. Those bass were also relating to the current and once that current kicked up, Manuel said the fish would move to the top of the hump.

On the final day, they went to their primary spot and did not catch a fish for several hours. Once the current increased, however, White and Manual landed a 5-pounder and a 7-12 largemouth. After that, the spot did not produce.

“I knew that spot had to fall apart sometime. We fished it all week and tried not to fish it out,” White said. “We had looked at some stuff yesterday before we came in and caught one that kept.”

Manuel upgraded one more time right before check-in by throwing a spoon around a marina, a technique he had never tried.

After not finding a big bite on Day 1, Carter and John caught 12-10 on Day 2 to sneak into the cut and then 15-8 on the final day to finish in third place. The duo caught around 15 bass total on the final day.

“We fished the same stuff and lucked into a big bite today and yesterday,” John said. “We had one the first day but we just didn’t get it in the boat. I’m just happy we were able to make it as far as we did.”

Whether it was in a creek or on the main lake, Carter said they were targeting schools of bass with a drop shot, a spoon and a football jig.

Along with their finish at this event, John and Carter won a state championship on Chickamauga a month ago and used their experience from that event to help them this week.

Connor Mason and Archer Reese from Meigs County High School secured Big Bass of the Tournament honors with the 8-11 largemouth they caught on Day 1, earning a $200 scholarship.

The Bassmaster High School Series National Championship tournament was hosted by the Rhea Economic & Tourism Council, Bryan College and Fish Dayton.

Perkins Takes Wire-To-Wire Win At Bassmaster Northern Open On Oneida

[print_link]

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — It was a day of firsts for Bill Perkins, as the New York pro made the most of his Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens debut to dominate the Northern Division event at Oneida Lake from start to finish with a three-day winning total of 52 pounds, 3 ounces.

With weights of 18-11 and 17 pounds, the first two rounds gave Perkins a slim lead each day. On Championship Saturday, he stepped on the gas, added 16-8 and crossed the finish line more than 2 pounds ahead of second-place A.J. Slegona Jr., of Walker Valley, N.Y.

Because Perkins didn’t fish the first Northern Open of the season on the James River, he’s not eligible for an automatic berth into the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk. That berth will go instead to Texas pro Ray Hanselman, who was sitting on the verge of Classic qualification in the Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year standings.

But Perkins, a resident of Rochester, N.Y., still earned the Skeeter Boats top prize of $45,000 — and was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.

“I haven’t let loose in three days; I haven’t slept, I haven’t eaten, I’ve been losing my mind, but it was all worth it,” he said. “I don’t know what to say, I’m just superappreciative.

“Thank God — He blessed me this week and He’s blessed me time and time again. I thank B.A.S.S., I thank my family and friends. The last three days have been epic. I won’t ever forget it.

Spending his tournament in the midlake region, Perkins targeted rocky bottom structure in about 14 to 20 feet.

The first two days, he had to contend with full-field crowding, plus strong winds that presented challenging conditions. While there was no escaping the boat pressure, Perkins managed to moderate the latter impediment with tackle adjustments

“I was fishing a drop shot with a 2.8-inch Keitech Easy Shiner and a 1/4-ounce tungsten weight, and a 1/6-ounce Z-Man finesse Ned head with a Z-Man TRD in the goby Bryant color,” Perkins said. “I had to go heavier on my weights to keep the baits on the bottom.

“Even with that adjustment, it was hard to make accurate presentations because I was getting blown off my spots by the wind. Even with Spot-Lock, I was getting blown back.”

A field that was reduced to 10 for the final round allowed Perkins the freedom to fish just about anywhere he wanted. The biggest advantage, however, was the nearly flat conditions, which allowed him to closely inspect his area with his Humminbird MEGA 360 and make precise presentations.

“I’ve been running multiple areas and today, I sat down on my best spot in Fisher Bay because there wasn’t as many guys on the water and I had it all to myself,” Perkins said. “There was a bunch of isolated rock in there and I was just slowly picking it apart.”

Surprisingly, Perkins was unable to get bit on his drop shot or Ned Rig Saturday, so he switched to a 1/2-ounce Keitech tungsten football head with a green pumpkin Keitech Spider Grub. Working this bait with a painfully slow retrieve delivered prompt results.

“I had a limit today by 8:04 and I caught my biggest one — about a 4 1/4 — at 7:30,” Perkins said. “That took the pressure off.”

Day 1 yielded only six bites and Perkins had to endure several hours of catching only drum before boating a bass at 11:30. Day 2 started more productively, with a limit by 10:04, but Perkins would catch only six fish. He attributed his final-round success to persistence.

“The key was staying put,” he said. “I got all my good bites in Fisher (the first two days) and I said, ‘There’s not going to be nearly as many guys today, I’m gonna buckle down in there.’ I had it all to myself — it was great.”

Slegona placed second with 50-2. After a 21st-place bag of 15-12, he added 17-14 on Friday and entered Championship Saturday in third place. Matching Perkins’ final-round weight allowed him to rise one spot.

Focusing on main-lake rock shoals in 10 to 12 feet, Slegona fished a Carolina-rigged Zoom Speed Craw in grassy areas. In more open areas, he used a 1/2-ounce Keitech football jig with an Erie Darter trailer.

“I only had six to seven bites a day throughout the tournament,” Slegona said. “It was just all about timing. They turn on at different times and, every once in a while, you get the right rockpile with fish biting on it.”

Sam George of Athens, Ala., finished third with 49-8. He caught 18-2 on Day 1 and tied Thomas Hughes of Cicero, N.Y., for third place, then added 16-10 on Friday and moved up to second before slipping back a spot with a final-round limit of 14-12.

Targeting a large main-lake grass flat with gravel patches, George caught his fish by drop shotting a Strike King Rage Swimmer in sexy shad and a Strike King KVD Dream Shot in honey candy.

“I got a little dialed in on Day 1,” George said. “I had a rough start and didn’t get a lot of bites, but late in the day, I got on a little area where it started happening for me.”

Liam Blake of Syracuse, N.Y., won the $750 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award.

George won the $500 Garmin Tournament Rewards for being the highest finishing competitor using Garmin products.

Brandon Palaniuk of Rathdrum, Idaho, leads the Northern Open standings with 392 points. Mike Iaconelli of Pitts Grove, N.J., is in second with 381, followed by Hugh Cosculluela of Spring, Texas, with 372, Alex Redwine of Blue Ash, Ohio, with 360 and Jacob Powroznik of North Prince George, Va., with 357.

Powroznik leads the overall Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens points standings with 878 points.

Who Won At ICAST?: Part II (Best Of The Rest)

In the last entry of The Hot Bite, we covered some of the most buzz-worthy products to come out of this year’s ICAST show. This entry largely focused on the newest lures and soft plastics introduced at last week’s show, many of which drew a significant amount of fanfare among those in attendance.

However, there was also an abundance of additional fishing tech and gear to come out of this year’s ICAST, much of which is also worth mentioning. Many of these products are highly innovative and should be of great value to anglers, during their various pursuits on the water.

The following are some of the most noteworthy products to come out of the 2021 ICAST show, within the gear/tech market sector.

Humminbird Mega Live Imaging

As previously reported, Humminbird has now dove headlong into the live-sonar market, with the company’s release of their new Mega Live Imaging interface. As it turns out, those in attendance at ICAST were equally enthused by this development, as Humminbird’s new technology took this year’s Best Electronics award. It is safe to say that competition is heating up within the high-end sonar market.

Plano Edge Line Management System

The Plano Edge Line Management System has anglers covered, whenever the need to re-spool their favorite reel arises. This all-in-one unit features storage for up to 12 300-yard spools of line and a total of eight tension bands for simplified line handling. Also included is a one-handed top-latch, making it easier than ever to quick-spool any reel.

Daiwa Zillion SV TW

The Daiwa Zillion SV TW took top honors for the Best Freshwater Reel at this year’s ICAST Show. This reel expands upon Daiwa’s SV Concept, through the use of a patented SV Booster two-stage braking system, which provides exceptional control when casting, even under the most demanding of conditions. The Zillion SV TW is also designed with unparalleled durability in mind, featuring a Hyper Armed Housing, Hyper Tough Clutch, and Hyper Double Support Bearings.

Who Won At ICAST?

There is perhaps no greater place to debut new and innovative fishing products, than at the annual ICAST sports show. This is a fact that today’s top manufacturers are all too aware of, as many top names in the industry wait until ICAST to roll out their latest tech. As a result, ICAST has become the epicenter of all that is fresh and exciting in the sport of fishing.

True to form, this year’s ICAST show did not disappoint. The show itself took place just over a week ago, running from July 20-23, and was held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orland, Florida. An endless sea of exhibitors were on hand, all attempting to distinguish their latest offerings from those of their competitors.

The following are several “winners” of this year’s ICAST show, who captivated the minds of both onlookers and members of the media.

Berkley Gilly Swimbait

If you have not seen the Berkley Gilly Swimbait, do yourself a favor, and take a look. This swimbait is extremely realistic, leaving little doubt as to whether or no bass will find it appetizing. The Powerbait Gilly was actually designed by pro angler Mike Iaconelli, for Berkley, with respect to a number of the industry’s ultra-popular swimbaits of Japanese origins.

Strike King: Chick Magnet

Over the past several years, flat-sided crankbaits have enjoyed a revival of sorts, as a number of manufacturers have prepared similar offerings of this design. Now, Strike King has joined the flat-sided crankbait market, with the introduction of a lure that they call the Chick Magnet. This flat-sided crankbait presents a tight-wobbling action and features a special bill that allows it to dart through cover with striking realism. The Chick Magnet received ICAST’s 2021 Best Freshwater Hard Lure award.

Z-Man: Big Bladez ChatterBait

While Z-Man is no stranger to success in the chatterbait market, the company’s newest offering amps up the standard chatterbait’s appeal, and takes its value to an entirely new level. The new Big Bladez ChatterBait was designed by tournament Pro Brian Thrift, and features magnum-sized blades, for enhanced sound/vibration output. The Big Bladez ChatterBait also comes in a total of nine colors, for unmatched versatility.

Mims Pulls Off Spectacular Come-From-Behind Victory

By John N. Felsher

DAYTON, Tenn. – Behind by nearly 16 pounds, Kacy L. Mims needed to make a huge leap during the second day of the American Bass Anglers Top 150 Solo Series event, held June 25-26, 2021, on Lake Chickamauga near Dayton, Tenn.

The Randolph, Ala. angler did it by catching the second heaviest bag of the tournament. Pulling in five bass for 29.55 pounds on the second and last day of the final event in the ABA Top 150 Solo Series inaugural season, Mims won with a 45.17-pound total.

“I was fishing the mid-lake area around submerged hydrilla in water about six to eight feet deep,” the newly crowned champion revealed. “I was slow dragging a Texas-style Senko in green pumpkin with a watermelon stripe.”

Mims held 12th place on Day 1 of the two-day event with a five-bass daily tournament limit weighing 15.62 pounds. He capped that catch with a 7.84-pound kicker. On the second day, he returned to that spot and caught another five-bass limit anchored by his biggest fish of the tournament at 7.90 pounds.

“On the final day, I caught that big bass in the same spot where I caught that 7.84-pounder the day before,” Mims commented. “I caught two six-pounders on consecutive casts. I caught five good fish off that hole, but they quit biting at 8:30 a.m. I was able to cull a 3.15-pounder later in the day.”

Mims will join the other 2021 ABA Top 150 Solo Series divisional winners plus the Southeast and Southwest Division Anglers of the Year at the 2022 Ray Scott Championship. In other Southeast Division events, Shane Powell of Dothan, Ala. qualified by winning at Lake Eufaula, Ala. in February and Jesse Wise of Erwin, N.C. won at Lake Guntersville near Scottsboro, Ala. in May.

In the Southwest Division, Cody Pitt from Hineston, La. won at Toledo Bend Reservoir near Many, La. in February. Zach A. Clark of Center, Texas, won two events, one held in March at Lake Sam Rayburn near Zavalla, Texas, and another at Lake Eufaula near Eufaula, Okla. in May.

Day 1 leader on Lake Chickamauga, Jonathan “Dale” Pelfrey of Rockwood, Tenn. dropped a notch. After catching the largest sack of the tournament on Day 1 at 31.36 pounds, he brought in 12.66 pounds on the second day to finish a little over a pound behind Mims with 10 bass weighing 44.02 pounds.

“In practice, I graphed some holes with good fish,” Pelfrey advised. “On the first morning, I pulled up to one hole, and saw two really big ones and some other good fish. I caught two nine-pounders on back-to-back casts. I caught seven keepers off that one hole on the first day and left. I caught more fish on several holes the first day. I’d catch one fish and leave it for the second day because I already had a good sack.”

On the first day, Pelfrey caught his biggest bass of the tournament at 9.52-pounds to give him the big sack. His first three fish of the morning weighed more than 21 pounds. He caught most of his fish on ledges by dragging baits and throwing a Strike King 10XD crankbait.

“Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out for me on the second day,” Pelfrey lamented. “I just couldn’t get on a lot of stuff. I caught two of my keepers on a Ned rig and others on a football jig, a worm and a big plug, but I caught most of my fish on a worm.”

Sometimes called the Midwest Finesse Bait, a Ned rig consists of a light jighead with a four- to five-inch plastic stick trailer. With the light jighead, bass anglers can fish it like a wacky worm, just letting it fall as it glides from side to side. Fish it on a slack line and watch for the line to move in an odd direction. Also, crawl it along the bottom around stumps and other cover.

Jeff Knight of Cleveland, Tenn. also dropped one place from Day 1 to finish third among the 90 competitors. He ended with a two-day limit of 10 bass going 43.30 pounds. On the first day, Knight held second with 24.68 pounds. That bag included a 9.90-pounder, the tournament lunker. For the big bass, Knight pocketed a $1,000 bonus.

“A 7:15 a.m. on the first morning, I pulled up to a hump that I had found in a previous tournament and immediately caught a two-pounder,” Knight reported. “A couple casts later, I caught the tournament lunker. On my next cast, I caught a 6.5-pounder and had a limit by 7:30 a.m.”

On the final day, Knight caught a five-bass daily limit weighing 18.62 pounds. He lost a good fish that hurt him in the standings.

“I caught all my bass, including in practice, by fishing ledges with a 3/4-ounce football jig,” Knight said. “I lost about an eight-pounder on a worm on the final day. That cost me the tournament, but third place is better than nothing. I had fun. It was a good tournament.”

Also making a giant leap, Johnathan “Wellman” L. Robeson of Tarheel, N.C., held 22nd place after Day 1 with a five-bass daily tournament limit going 13.88 pounds. He persistently fished the same spot for two days. With only four bass, including a 7.34-pounder, he landed the second largest Day 2 sack weighing 23.48 pounds. That moved him up 18 slots to finish fourth with 37.36 pounds.

“Coming to this tournament, I knew it was going to be tough for me because I don’t have a lot of offshore experience,” Robeson explained. “I followed the creek channels off the main river with my Navionics mapping card. I found a treetop in a bend that was in five to eight feet of water. I caught the fish I weighed on a 1/2-ounce jig. I fished that same tree for two days.”

Jim M. Leary from Guntersville, Ala., wrapped up the Top 5 anglers in the last tournament of the first season for the ABA Top 150 Solo Series. He held third place on Day 1 with five bass and 23.41 pounds. He capped the catch with a 7.54-pound kicker. On the second day, he caught 13.79 pounds. He dropped two places to finish fifth with 10 bass at 37.20 pounds.

“I came up to the lake with the mindset that I was going to stay offshore,” Leary said. “I caught just about everything on a 4×4 football jig with a NetBait Paca Slim trailer. At 11 a.m. on the first day, I already had a limit in the boat. I pulled up to another spot and threw out the jig. I culled four times in five casts with that football jig. I caught the 7.54-pounder, a five-pounder and two four-pounders. On the second day, the only way I could catch fish was with a Ned rig. I lost two good fish.”

Tim P. Wheelon of Bell Buckle, Tenn. finished sixth with 10 bass tallying 35.60 pounds. He held fifth place on the first day with five bass at 18.86 pounds.

Finishing seventh, Seth Davis of Harrison, Tenn. landed a two-day 10-bass limit for 35.54 pounds. He held fourth on Day 1 with 20.77 pounds and added 14.77 pounds on the second day.

Already qualified to fish the 2022 Ray Scott Championship because of his win on Lake Guntersville in the second Southeast Division event, Jesse Wise held eighth place throughout the tournament. He finished with 10 bass for 33.90 pounds after landing 17.59 pounds on Day 1 and 16.31 pounds the final day.

Bradley G. Gardner of Molena, Ga. finished ninth with 10 bass weighing 33.62 pounds. He held seventh place on Day 1 with 18.38 pounds and brought in another 15.24 pounds on the final day.

Rounding out the Top 10 finishers, David Parsons of Dothan, Ala. caught a 10-bass two-day limit good for 32.67 pounds. On the first day, he sat in 14th place with 15.31 pounds. He moved up four spots on the final day with a 17.36-pound catch to conclude the ABA Top 150 Solo Series inaugural season.

Las Vegas Anglers Take Day 2 Lead At Bassmaster High School National Championship At Chickamauga

DAYTON, Tenn. — Thanks to some late-day heroics, the Sin City Bass Club team of Carter Doren and Ryan Lachniet took the lead on Day 2 of the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors at Chickamauga Lake, landing a three-fish limit of 11-2 to increase their two-day total to 26-3.

Brent Randall and Carson Falk from the Quincy High School Bassmasters hold second place with 24-14, while the Hanover County duo of Turner Hart and Nicholas Bradley are in third with 24-12.

“It’s absolutely incredible. I came to Kentucky Lake one time in 2019 and I zeroed,” Doren said. “It was absolutely awful; I remember it vividly. Coming back and having a great finish so far is incredible. I can’t wait to finish it out.”

Although they had their limit around midday, the Las Vegas natives fished the second half of the day with a sour taste in their mouths after Doren broke off a bass he knew would have helped a lot. Their fortunes changed about 20 minutes before check-in time, as Lachniet landed a bass he located on the Lowrance ActiveTarget unit.

“We were down a little bit. After losing that one big one we were feeling bad. But that fish definitely lifted the mood a lot,” Lachniet said.

Once Doren netted the bass and got it safely in the boat, they celebrated briefly before heading back for weigh-in.

“We were all screaming and hollering and jumping around,” Doren said. “You could probably hear us around the entire south end (of the lake).”

Much of the team’s success this week has been because of their forward-facing sonar.

“This is the first time I’ve used it. Ryan’s been using it a long time,” Doren said. “It’s been incredible. I’ve looked at fish I never knew were there, and we’ve caught fish we’ve never seen. It has helped us find our fish, it’s helped us pattern our fish, it’s helped us with everything this week.”

During the first two days, Doren and Lachniet have developed a milk run of about five productive spots, one of which has produced more than the others. Much like Thursday, Day 2 began slowly and Lachniet said they went three hours without a bite.

“We fished for about three hours and our first bite was a 4-pounder. We started catching them after that,” he said. “We caught about three or four in about an hour before he caught the 3-pounder. That’s what we had the rest of the day until about 20 minutes to go when we caught that big one.”

The slow starts can be somewhat attributed to the current moving through the lake, Lachniet added.

“I think that is kind of why we are catching them later in the day,” he said. “It’s slow in the morning, and I think it’s because they aren’t pulling water. Around 11 o’clock they seem to start biting.”

With 10 total fish during the day, Doren said it was the most they have caught in a day since they arrived for practice.

“We aren’t getting a lot of bites, but we are getting quality bites,” he said. “We would have been up there (with a higher total) but I broke off a fish that I think was pretty big.”

As they prepare for Saturday, Doren and Lachniet aren’t planning on making any changes, but know they need to fish clean if they want to hoist the trophies at the end.

“It is pretty exciting,” Lachniet said. “We are going to have to go out there tomorrow and catch them. No missing fish, no losing fish. Catch three big ones and get it done.”

Meanwhile, Randall and Falk caught 10-12 on Day 2 to jump from third to second heading into Championship Saturday. The duo got off to a fast start, catching 10 total fish and filling out their limit around their first spot.

“We started on a spot that I found in practice, but we were unsure how it was at daylight. We ran there this morning and it worked really well,” Randall said. “That’s what we are banking on tomorrow. There are a lot of good fish. I caught a 6-pounder there and one of the 5-pounders came from there yesterday. We feel like we can win the tournament right there.”

This particular spot is a grass flat located around the main-river channel, Randall said. So far this week, he hasn’t seen any other competitors around the area.

“I haven’t seen another boat on it, but there is a big local derby out here tomorrow, and it is Saturday on the TVA,” Randall said. “It’s kind of off the wall and not very obvious. It is a big area and, the way we are fishing, we could get right in a hurry.”

In his first attempt at a National Championship, Falk said he is excited to have a chance to win.

“We just have to keep it going for tomorrow,” he said. “It’s been a lot of early ups and a lot of going to sleep late trying to figure out what you are going to catch and where you are going to catch it. It’s been fun.”

After catching 9-3 on the first day, Hart and Bradley vaulted up the leaderboard with a 15-9 Day 2 bag that was anchored by an 8-7 largemouth, the biggest bass of the day. Unlike Doren and Lachniet, the Virginia anglers don’t have a unit on the bow of their boat, instead focusing on obvious targets in shallow water.

Day 2 got off to a slow start, but one laydown changed the outcome of their day for the better.

“We didn’t really have anything today until about 12 o’clock,” Hart said. “We pulled up to one blowdown and I caught that big one. After that, we got the ball rolling and caught two close to 4 pounds. That big one changed our vibe.”

After getting a lot of bites in their primary area, but no bigger bites, the duo switched things up and figured out how to get a better-than-average bite. A Zoom Magnum Finesse Worm has been their bait of choice along with a jig.

“Hopefully tomorrow we can spend more time in that area and whack them,” Hart said.

The Top 12 teams will compete on Championship Saturday. Anglers will take off from Dayton Boat Docks at 6:45 a.m. ET and return for weigh-in starting at 2:45 p.m. Weigh-in will be available to livestream on Bassmaster.com.

The Bassmaster High School Series National Championship tournament is being hosted by the Rhea Economic & Tourism Council, Bryan College and Fish Dayton.

Perkins Maintains Lead At Bassmaster Northern Open At Oneida

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Bill Perkins caught only a five-bass limit Friday, but that 17-pound bag was enough to keep the New York pro in the lead on Day 2 of the Basspro.com Bassmaster Northern Open at Oneida Lake.

Bolstering his Day 1 limit of 18-11, Perkins tallied 35-11 and leads Sam George of Athens, Ala., by 15 ounces.

Another windy day presented challenging conditions for boat positioning and bait presentations. However, Perkins got his work done in short order. Day 1 saw him struggle through a frustrating morning, during which he caught several drum before finally boating a smallmouth bass at 11:30.

“I had five by 10:04 today, so that was a huge stress relief, to actually catch them in the morning instead of waiting all day,” Perkins said. “It was supertough. Today, I had five bites; yesterday, I had six. It’s just an absolute grinder out there.”

Sticking to the midlake region, Perkins returned to the same spots he fished on Day 1. Fishing a total of 15 locations Friday, he said a third of them produced his weight.

“After I caught my weight, I ran around and tried to cull,” Perkins said. “My co-angler had one and I was trying to help him get his other two. We ran a bunch of stuff, but everything is just pounded.

“I was so happy to have a limit early today. I was like, ‘Yes! Now I can just fish for a big one.’ I took a sigh of relief, but I didn’t think I had 17 — I thought I had like 15.”

Perkins, again, caught his fish on a mix of drop shots and Ned rigs and fared best with slow, meticulous presentation. Given the lake’s wind-whipped conditions, he had to make strategic tackle adjustments.

“Just like yesterday, because it was so windy, I had to use heavier weights just to keep a bait on the bottom,” Perkins said. “Also, it’s superimportant to be able to feel the bait, because the wind blows your slack and it’s supertough to feel. So, the heavier weight helps a little bit with that.”

Saturday’s forecast calls for more wind, but with the field cut to 10 boats, Perkins is optimistic.

“I was sharing water with a bunch of guys (today),” Perkins said. “Hopefully, tomorrow I won’t have to.”

After tying Thomas Hughes of Cicero, N.Y., for third place on Day 1 with 18-2, George caught 16-10 Friday and sits well within striking distance of the lead with 34-12.

George started the day on the spot where he ended Day 1 and caught his fish on finesse baits. This area had an attractive looking rocky bottom in 18 to 20 feet.

“My bite numbers were way down today, but when I got a bite, it was a good one,” George said. “Smallmouth like to roam and it doesn’t take much to make them move. We had almost a 180-degree wind shift and I kind of expected them to move today.

“I caught them pretty early and I had most of my weight at 9 or 10 o’clock. I kind of expected to have another shot to cull up throughout the day, but I just never did. The wind made it very difficult to (make an effective presentation).”

A.J. Slegona Jr. of Walker Valley, N.Y., is in third place with 33-10. Improving from 21st place on Day 1, Slegona added 17-14 to his first-round total of 15-12.

“I fished the same areas I fished yesterday; I just fished them a little differently,” Slegona said. “I was focusing on the windblown sides of main-lake rock shoals in 10 to 12 feet. Time of day didn’t matter; it was just mostly timing, whenever they would turn on and feed.”

Slegona rotated through about 20 spots and caught his fish on five of them. He fished a Carolina-rigged Zoom Speed Craw in grassy areas and switched to a 1/2-ounce Keitech football jig with an Erie Darter trailer for areas with less grass.

Liam Blake of Syracuse, N.Y., is in the lead for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with a 5-9.

Tom Testa of Port Crane, N.Y., won the co-angler division with a two-day total of 21-2. Turning in an impressively consistent performance, Testa weighed a three-bass limit of 10-11 on Thursday and followed with 10-7 Friday.

Edging Jon Jezierski of Troy, Mich., by 2-14, Testa won the top prize of $22,000.

Testa caught all of his fish on a Carolina rig with a 1/2-ounce weight, a 24-inch fluorocarbon leader, a 4/0 wide gap hook and a 5150 Plastics craw in the green pumpkin candy color. The key to his presentation was a glacial retrieve.

“I slowed down a lot; I’ve never fished that slow in my life, but it was the key to getting every bite I got,” Testa said. “That bait is garlic scented and the action on those claws is what they wanted.

“I retrieved the rig by pointing my rod at the water and just reeling. It took up to a minute to complete each presentation. I fished this on braided main line, so I could throw it a long way and cover a lot of water.

Mark Kendra of Great Meadows, N.J., won the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass title among co-anglers with a 4-13.

Brandon Palaniuk of Rathdrum, Idaho, leads the Northern Open standings with 393 points. Mike Iaconelli of Pitts Grove, N.J., is in second with 381, followed by Hugh Cosculluela of Spring, Texas, with 372, Alex Redwine of Blue Ash, Ohio, with 360 and Jacob Powroznik of North Prince George, Va., with 358.

Powroznik leads the overall Falcon Rods Bassmaster Opens points standings with 879.

Saturday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. ET at Oneida Shores Park. Weigh-in will take place at the Bass Pro Shops in Auburn, N.Y., at 3:15 p.m.

Cowboy Cifuentes Takes Lead at Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit Savage Arms Stop 6 Presented by Abu Garcia at St. Lawrence River

MASSENA, N.Y. (July 30, 2021) – Pro Joey “Cowboy” Cifuentes of Clinton, Arkansas, took over the lead on Day Two of the MLF Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit Presented by Bad Boy Mowers, Savage Arms Stop 6 Presented by Abu Garcia at the St. Lawrence River Friday, bringing a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 18 pounds, 14 ounces. Cifuentes’ two-day total of 10 bass weighing 43 pounds, 3 ounces gives him a slim 2-ounce advantage heading into Day 3 of the four-day competition featuring bass fishing professionals from around the world, competing for up to $135,000.

Reigning 2020 Angler of the Year Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan moved from 3rd place into 2nd with a five-bass limit weighing 19 pounds, 10 ounces on Friday, while Kurt Mitchell of Milford, Delaware brought a 20-pound, 9-ounce bag to the scale, moving him from 25th place into 7 th. Jon Canada of Helena, Alabama, made the biggest leap toward the top of the leaderboard, weighing a limit of 21-15 to catapult him from 62nd place into the top 10 on Day 2 of competition.

Anglers battled strong, cold-front winds and a significant chop throughout the entire second day of competition. Add finicky smallmouth to that and it makes for a difficult day out on the water.

“Today was tough with the wind and the fish were not biting very well,” said Cifuentes. “The wind was so bad and blowing against the current that it was almost impossible to let your bait move naturally with the current. In spite of the challenging conditions, I’m on top of the leaderboard and am fishing on Day 3, so, I’m pumped.”

Cifuentes said he got off to a strong start fishing deep humps in the Clayton area, landing a solid pair of 4-pounders to bring him to around 17 pounds early on in Day 2. From there, he bounced around trying different things and was able to cull up a few ounces at a time.

“I’m kind of zoned in on the deep deal during this event,” said Cifuentes. “I just don’t really know if my area is going to replenish. So, I’m going to start there [on Day 3], but I will definitely need to expand from there. My gut is telling me I’m going to have to find some new stuff tomorrow.”

With plenty of areas and patterns that he picked up in practice, Cifuentes said he isn’t too worried, but the potential of his main area is certainly on his mind – the trick is to see if it will hold.

“I’m excited going into Day 3 because I think I can stop on some other places I found in practice and catch fish,” continued Cifuentes. “I really think I can catch a solid bag tomorrow doing a number of things, but I just don’t know for sure.

“It’s smallmouth, so I may only catch 12 pounds. Meanwhile, I know with my main area, I have the potential to catch another big bag. I just plan to follow my gut and see what happens.”

What’s in the Works at American Baitworks – TackleTour

Introduction: Despite some of the familiar names being absent at ICAST 2021, American Baitworks was sure to attend. Home to several brands which include Halo Fishing, Snag Proof, Net Bait, Scum Frog, Freedom Tackle Corp, and STH Bait Co, it’s no wonder they had several new items to show us this year. From killer new frogs to refreshed bass rods, we dropped by to visit with pro angler Scott Canterbury to run through the latest and greates
American Baitworks is parent company to famous frog brands Snag Proof and Scum Frog

Snag Proof Phat Frog: Like other new frogs offered by American Baitworks, the Phat Frog is constructed using a new injection process for consistent shape and a soft, yet durable body that will collapse easily when it’s time to set the hook. When I first picked up the frog, this difference was immediately noticeable and it simply felt great. Other features and tweaks include a flatter profile for better tracking through vegetation, legs that are further to the rear for more efficient action and hookup ratios, a rear “button” weight, and a line tie that’s welded shut so there’s no gap. At the rear of the frog, there’s also a “water evacuation system” which is a large outlet that allows any water inside the frog to drain out on its own as a cast is made. The new 3D imaging printed colors look outstanding and allow for unique full-body coloration.
