Strike King Lil’ Money Spinnerbait Review By Walker Smith March 23,2017

Strike King Lil’ Money Spinnerbait Review

Walker Smith

March 23,2017

This spinnerbait gets a lot of bites when you’re faced with tough fishing conditions.

Finesse spinnerbaits are a popular option, especially on pressured fisheries. Simply downsizing the standard profile can make a world of difference when you’re having a tough time getting bites. I fish some tough lakes around the house, so I’ve seen this first-hand. I do not go fishing without a small spinnerbait somewhere in my boat.

I’ve spent a considerable amount of time this year fishing with the Strike King Lil’ Mr. Money Spinnerbait. It’s a small, 3/16-ounce spinnerbait and it catches bass of all sizes.

Here’s why I like it so much.

Tackle Talk: V&M Buzz Shad

This unique topwater bass fishing lure produces big fish in both thick cover and open water.

The topwater bite has been pretty solid for me lately, so I’ve been testing a bunch of different topwater lures in recent weeks. One lure that has certainly separated itself from the crowd is the V&M Buzz Shad. I fully expect this buzzbait-swimbait hybrid to catch a lot of big bass for anglers this year.

Here’s why I say that.

Giant Largemouth Thrusts Brent Ehrler Into The Lead At Bassmaster Classic

Giant Largemouth Thrusts Brent Ehrler Into The Lead At Bassmaster Classic

[print_link]

HOUSTON — After finishing 29th or lower in 10 of his last 12 tournaments with B.A.S.S., Brent Ehrler has been open about his recent frustrations.

“It’s really been bugging me that I haven’t been able to put myself in position to win,” Ehrler said. “To me, that’s the thrill of tournament fishing — just being in position as the tournament is coming to an end — and I have not experienced it at all on the Elite Series.”

On Friday, Ehrler put himself in that position — and he did it on the biggest stage professional bass fishing has to offer.

The 40-year-old pro from Newport Beach, Calif., caught five bass that weighed 23 pounds, 3 ounces and took the opening-round lead in the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. His catch was anchored by a giant 9-12 largemouth that ranked as his biggest in four trips to Lake Conroe and claimed the lead in the race for the Berkley Big Bass of the event.

“I’m definitely in position, but we have a lot of tournament left,” Ehrler said. “What I really like to do is start a little back in the pack, then jump up a little bit and have a chance to be there at the end. I don’t like jumping out in front, but a 9-12 will do that.

“I basically had a 16- or 17-pound limit today with a 9-12 that really bumped me up.”

Ehrler had a successful career on the FLW Tour, winning more than $2 million before moving to the Bassmaster Elite Series in 2015.

In two-plus seasons since then, he’s done well enough to make the Top 50 cut and earn a check in 12 events, and he’s qualified for the Classic both years he was eligible. But he has yet to claim a victory with B.A.S.S.

He said Friday’s big fish was a complete surprise, and he isn’t certain his pattern will hold up for three days.

“I had one big bite and a bunch of solid fish,” Ehrler said. “I wasn’t expecting to catch any big ones like that. I’ve fished three Toyota Texas Bass Classics here, and I haven’t caught a big bass like that — not even in practice. I didn’t catch one in practice for this tournament.

“I’ve learned something here, and I can do it in multiple areas. But I don’t know how strong.”

The kicker fish in Ehrler’s bag provided a slim margin over a crowded leaderboard that included seven bags of 20 pounds or more. Kentucky angler Bradley Roy is in second place with 22-1, followed by Cliff Crochet of Louisiana (21-8), Michael Iaconelli of New Jersey (21-2), Clifford Pirch of Arizona (20-11), Dave Lefebre of Pennsylvania (20-6) and James Elam of Oklahoma (20-1).

Roy, who made waves during Classic pre-practice in January by catching a personal-best largemouth that topped 10 pounds, benefited from that hard-earned knowledge he gained in practice.

“I found some stuff when I was here before the off-limits that I liked,” said Roy, a 26-year-old angler making his first Classic appearance. “I didn’t know that I was going to get a chance to use all of it because I didn’t know which phase of the spawn these fish were going to be in.

“I was able to use a little more of it than I thought I was going to, and it worked out.”

Crochet, who qualified for the Classic by winning last year’s final Central Open on the Atchafalaya Basin, Louisiana, was animated and loud when he climbed from his boat with his bag of 21-8.

“I’ve been very intense in my approach,” Crochet said. “I made it here in the bottom of the ninth inning. I was down in the count, and I know what it means to be here.

“I’m going to keep my eye on the prize.”

Conditions were tough on Conroe with 20- to 30-mph winds causing 4- and 5-foot waves on many parts of the lake. Calmer conditions are in the forecast for Saturday, and Ehrler said he believes that will allow anglers to move around more and bring in some even bigger weights.

It could also lead to increased boat traffic, but Roy said that won’t bother him.

“If the wind will lay down a little, it’ll let me get to a few more of my areas that I didn’t get to fish much today,” Roy said. “Actually, one of my best days in practice was on a Sunday when there were a bunch of boats running around.

“That gives me confidence that I can catch them, no matter the conditions.”

FLW CANCELS SATURDAY’S T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE LBL DIVISION EVENT ON KENTUCKY/BARKLEY LAKES

FLW CANCELS SATURDAY’S T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE LBL DIVISION EVENT ON KENTUCKY/BARKLEY LAKES

Advisory for Friday, March 24, 2017

WHAT:                  T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) LBL Division Event on Kentucky and Barkley lakes

WHEN:                  Originally scheduled for Saturday, March 25, 2017, will be rescheduled

NOTES:                The BFL LBL Division tournament on Kentucky and Barkley lakes slated for Saturday, March 25, has been cancelled due to forecasted strong storms and high winds.

FLW officials are working to determine a new date for the event.

All entries from the original event will roll over into the rescheduled tournament unless otherwise requested.

The 2017 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

LAKE CUMBERLAND READIES FOR FLW TOUR EVENT PRESENTED BY T-H MARINE

LAKE CUMBERLAND READIES FOR FLW TOUR EVENT PRESENTED BY T-H MARINE

[print_link]

SOMERSET, Ky. (March 23, 2017) – The fourth tournament of the 22nd season of the FLW Tour, the most competitive circuit in professional bass fishing, is coming to the Somerset-Pulaski County area April 6-9 with the FLW Tour at Lake Cumberland presented by T-H Marine. The event, which is hosted by the Somerset Tourist and Convention Commission, will feature 328 of the world’s premier bass anglers and co-anglers casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the Pro Division and up to $25,000 cash in the Co-angler Division.

“I think it’s going to be a great tournament, as long we don’t get a lot of rain heading into it,” said FLW Tour pro Rex Huff of Corbin, Kentucky, who has six top-10 finishes on Lake Cumberland in FLW competition. “When it rains, the water level rises quickly and isn’t ideal. But if it holds off the fishing is going to be great all over the lake, especially this time of year.

“Lake Cumberland has a lot to offer the Tour field in terms of fishable water,” continued Huff. “There are many different creeks with bushes, as well as main-lake areas with big rocks and standing trees. When local authorities serviced the dam several years ago, they lowered the water level and a lot of the trees grew up. Now, with the water level back up above them, those areas will definitely be popular.”

Although quality bites will be found all over the lake, Huff said he prefers locations on the lower end near the dam.

“It’s such a big lake that I think anglers are going to have find an area and stick with it throughout the tournament,” said Huff. “We may see some of the field make a run down to the dam, but it’s a gamble. It can cut as much as three hours of fishing out of the day, but there are some big, quality creeks to work through down there.”

Huff said that a variety of lures will be showcased in this event including jigs, jerkbaits, swimbaits and spinnerbaits. He said that fans can also expect to see three different species of bass crossing the weigh-in stage.

“There are going to be a lot of limits brought in consisting of both largemouth and smallmouth bass,” said Huff. “The lake has a lot of good spotted bass too, some in the 2- to 3-pound class.”

The Kentucky pro predicted that a four-day cumulative total of 70 pounds should be enough to take home top honors.

Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. EDT each day from General Burnside Island State Park, located at 8801 S. Highway 27, in Burnside, Kentucky. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins, April 6-7, will be held at General Burnside Island State Park beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins, April 8-9, will also be held at General Burnside Island State Park, but will begin at 4 p.m.

Prior to the weigh-ins Saturday and Sunday, fans are encouraged to experience the free Family Fishing Expo at General Burnside Island State Park from noon to 4 p.m. The Expo is a unique opportunity for fishing fans to meet their favorite anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.

Youth are also invited to participate in the free FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby at the Ruckel’s Restaurant Pay Lake, located at 192 KY-70 in Eubank, Kentucky, on Saturday, April 8, from 9-11 a.m. The event, hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, is free and open to area youth 18 years of age and younger and Special Olympics athletes. Rods and reels are available for the first 50 participants to use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one.

As part of the FLW Tour’s community outreach initiative, FLW Tour professionals will visit patients at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, located at 205 Langdon St., in Somerset, Wednesday, April 5, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in Somerset, Kentucky. Professional anglers will interact with guests, snap photos, sign autographs for patients and staff and share fishing stories before the tournament kicks off Thursday.

In FLW Tour competition, pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day, with pros supplying the boat, controlling boat movement and competing against other pros. Co-anglers fish from the back deck against other co-anglers. The full field competes in the two-day opening round. Co-angler competition concludes following Friday’s weigh-in, while the top 20 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2017 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Lake Murray in Columbia, South Carolina, Aug. 11-13.

The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Cumberland presented by T-H Marine is more than $800,000, including $10,000 through 50th place in the Pro Division.

Television coverage of the FLW Tour at Lake Cumberland presented by T-H Marine will premiere in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) May 24 from 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. EDT. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

GOST® NAV-TRACKER 1.0 VITAL IN RECOVERY OF BOAT LOST WHILE UNDER TOW – MARCH 22,2017

GOST® NAV-TRACKER 1.0 VITAL IN RECOVERY OF BOAT LOST WHILE UNDER TOW – March 22,2017

GOST® NAV-TRACKER 1.0 VITAL IN RECOVERY OF BOAT LOST WHILE UNDER TOW
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – GOST® (Global Ocean Security Technologies), a world leader in marine security, tracking, monitoring and video surveillance systems, announced today that its Nav-Tracker 1.0 was instrumental in the targeted recovery of a 350LX Everglades center console.
A tender for a larger yacht, the center console was under tow on its way back from the Bahamas in the early Monday morning hours approximately 25 miles east of Miami. Due to heavy seas, the towline severed and the boat went adrift with the crew unable to safely replace the towline. Using the Nav-Tracker 1.0’s two-way Global Inmarsat based tracking system, GOST worked with the owner and crew, to remotely and automatically update position reports every five minutes. The boat began an average 2-knot northerly drift. The yacht crew contacted Steel Towing of Fort Lauderdale to coordinate the recovery of the vessel in concert with the incoming gps tracks. The boat was located intact and undamaged drifting exactly where broadcasted, 23 nautical miles east of Fort Lauderdale. The turnaround time from tow release to recovery was under eight hours.
“The GOST Nav-Tracker performed exactly as advertised and provided our asset’s precise location for a coordinated recovery,” said Bryan Gentry, owner. “Not only did we get our boat back without damage, but we were able to avoid a costly salvage operation to find it.”
“Our team was given constant automated alerts with updated positions from the GOST Nav-Tracker,” said Jim Steel, owner, Steel Towing. “It was a really rough offshore and there is absolutely no doubt that we would not have been able to find it without those updates.”
“It is amazing how common it is for boats to break free while under tow in rough sea conditions where immediate retrieval is not an option,” said Brian Kane, chief technology officer, GOST. “Having a discreet way of globally tracking our clients’ maritime assets is a wise investment. We are relieved that our Nav-Tracker 1.0 could bring this situation to a rapid, targeted and positive conclusion.”

FOR THE 2017 BASSMASTER CLASSIC

[print_link]

“Fantastic Four” to rely on Raymarine’s reliability and fish-finding performance during Texas showdown on Lake Conroe

WILSONVILLE, OR (March 23, 2017) – Four talented anglers have emerged from Raymarine’s pro ambassador team to compete in the 2017 Bassmaster Classic, March 24th-26th. A veritable ‘Fantastic Four,’ each of these anglers possesses unique bass-catching powers that could play out favorably on Texas’ Lake Conroe in upcoming days.

“We are honored to support a talented pro ambassador team of BASS Elite anglers competing for the highest honors in the professional bass world,” said Larry Rencken, Vice President of Sales, Raymarine.

Meet 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic competitors Bobby Lane, Bill Lowen, Skylar Hamilton, and Chris Zaldain – anglers with disparate backgrounds and fishing styles – but a shared, single-minded pursuit. Along the same lines, each will rely on Raymarine electronics and technologies during the mission-critical event.

“Rugged, reliable, and easy-to-interpret marine electronics are essential to compete at this level, and their choice of Raymarine speaks volumes to our core mission to design and manufacture superior fish-finding and navigational technologies,” Rencken added.

Following a second place finish at the 2015 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell, South Carolina, and an 11th place finish at last year’s Classic on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees, Oklahoma, Raymarine pro Bobby Lane is consistently within striking distance of top Classic honors.

A versatile angler shallow or deep, Lane relies on Raymarine eS127 MFDs. “I want to know that the topographic features are where I want to be; and I want to know how I can navigate there. Raymarine definitely has the clearest, most sensitive screen I have ever seen,” said Lane.

Indiana’s Bill Lowen has qualified for the Bassmaster Classic eight times, including a Top 10 finish at the 2012 Bassmaster Classic. Lowen’s fishing style might be described as pragmatic—fishing to conditions and not expectations—and keeping confidence baits in the water once he’s located high-probability areas with his Raymarine CP200 CHIRP SideVision Sonar. Known to pull rabbits out of hats, Lowen’s creative, one-of-a-kind bait tweaks have a history of getting bit when competitors’ approaches fail to produce.

Raymarine Pro Skylar Hamilton fished his first Bassmaster Opens at only 16 years old. Pursuing a lifelong dream to fish professionally, Hamilton spent every spare moment not in school practicing and guiding on Tennessee’s Douglas and Cherokee Lake.

Six years later and this 22-year-old is a serious contender. Most recently, Hamilton won the Bassmaster Central Open on the Arkansas River, which earned a berth in the 2017 Bassmaster Classic. Hamilton also qualified for the 2017 Bassmaster Elite series at the final Bassmaster Central Open.

In 2005, Raymarine pro Chris Zaldain won a bass boat fishing as a co-angler, and the tinder of a pro bass fishing career was lit. Zaldain soon earned five top-10 FLW finishes in the National Guard Western Series and was the only western pro to qualify for the Forrest Wood Cup four years in a row through the same series.

In 2011, Zaldain set his sights on the B.A.S.S. tour, fishing the Bassmaster Central Opens with great success, earning two top-12 cuts, Angler of the Year, and Bassmaster Elite Series qualification. Zaldain’s successes continued with qualifications for the 2014 and 2016 Bassmaster Classics.

Most recently, Zaldain finished seventh in the 2016 AOY standings, earning a spot in the 2017 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Conroe.

Trained on the diverse waters of the West, the California-native is equally adept with finesse or power fishing. Whether sight fishing clear waters or fishing vertically with his Raymarine CHIRP sonar and DownVision, Zaldain is a master of precise presentations.
