BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Fifty-two of the world’s best bass anglers will head to Houston next week to compete for more than $1 million in the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, and fans will be able to follow the action as it happens.

Classic LIVE will be broadcasting in real time from the B.A.S.S. booth at the Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods in the George R. Brown Convention Center.

“What an incredible venue we have this year being set up in the heart of Houston, Texas, and watching the action unfold live on a lake that some anglers are saying might produce multiple 10-pound-plus bass,” said Mike McKinnis, vice president of media content for JM Associates and producer of The Bassmasters TV show on ESPN2.

Cameras will be streaming live coverage of the Classic leaders on Lake Conroe back to the expo production facility, where hosts will break down the action for fans tuning in through Bassmaster.com and WatchESPN. Hosts Tommy Sanders, Mark Zona, and Davy Hite along with Dave Mercer and on-the-water reporter Robbie Floyd, will provide analysis and live updates.

This year, special guest Brian Robison of the Minnesota Vikings will also be onsite for the Classic LIVE show to provide some local insight. Robison played for the University of Texas and calls Lake Conroe his home lake.

Also, special guest RJ Mitte, who plays Walter White Jr. on the series “Breaking Bad,” will be joining the set at the expo.

The 2016 version of “Classic LIVE” reached nearly 12 million minutes viewed during the three-day event.

Each day of competition will have six hours of coverage, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Watch the tournament leaders catch bass in real time on the exclusive Classic LIVE program on Bassmaster.com and simulcast on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.

Facebook Live broadcasts will be added to the coverage this year, on the B.A.S.S. Facebook page, including coverage of takeoff on Day 1, the Toyota Mid-Day Report all three days around noon, and the press conference with the Top 6 anglers after each competition day.

Also on Bassmaster.com, fans can keep up with every fish caught through BASSTrakk, a real-time leaderboard that shows each angler’s catch according to estimates of marshals assigned to each competitor’s boat. In addition, on-the-water reporters provide a running commentary on the action in the Live Blog.

“Through those features, along with videos and photo galleries, we’ll have the lake covered from top to bottom,” said Jim Sexton, B.A.S.S. VP/Digital. “And we’ll cover every inch of the Minute Maid Park weigh-ins and the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo, as well.”

Rapala Shad Dancer Review By Jason Sealock March 15,2017

Rapala Shad Dancer Review

Jason Sealock

March 15,2017

Another great, staple crankbait for your coldwater bass fishing.

Everyone has their favorite shallow crankbait. I try not to and make myself experiment more than most. But even still, new crankbaits hardly make it into my collection of staples from the cold water months leading into the spawn. The Rapala Shad Dancer, however, made the cut already this year.

I would classify the Shad Dancer as a finesse crankbait, although it does have a wider tail kick than a lot of “finesse” crankbaits. It can be fished on spinning gear like a Shad Rap, but I actually found that it fishes nicely on lighter baitcasting gear as well. The bait has an action you can feel in a sensitive rod.

Opinion: Why I’m Now a Ned Rig Believer

Walker Smith

March 16,2017

Managing Editor Walker Smith had an eye-opening experience with the Ned rig and since then, he hasn’t stopped catching ‘em on it.

It takes a lot for tackle to impress me nowadays. I see and fish with the newest tackle each year and very rarely does it blow me away. I make a concerted effort to sift through the marketing jargon and discover whether or not it’s worth our readers spending their hard-earned money on.

I take that duty very seriously.

With that being said, I also consider it an obligation to spill the beans whenever I finally run across a product or technique that knocks my proverbial socks off. That’s what my job is about: Helping folks catch more fish.

So trust me when I say this: You need to be throwing the Ned rig. Yesterday.

First Look: Yamamoto Sanshouo by Walker Smith March 14,2017

First Look: Yamamoto Sanshouo

Walker Smith

March 14,2017

This unique soft plastic bait has a unique action that allows for several different applications when bass fishing.

Truth be told, a lot of the soft plastics I test each year never make it into my regular lineup. I have confidence in a core group of baits and it can be hard to find noticeable innovation in the soft plastics market. Why would I fish with an imitation when I can fish with the original?

I didn’t quite know what to think when I first saw the Yamamoto Sanshouo. It’s a strange looking bait and I wasn’t sure how I was going to apply it in my fishing. After several months and a lot of tinkering, however, I found it to be a definite fish catcher.

Here’s what I think you should know about it.

Top 10 Baits from the Harris Chain – FLW Outdoors – March 13,2017 By Jody White

John Cox

There’s a reason certain baits are popular in certain areas of the country: They work. At the FLW Tour event presented by Ranger Boats on the Harris Chain, it was proven yet again that sometimes you don’t need to think out of the box. The Harris Chain presents some different cover options than popular tournament stop Lake Okeechobee, but for submerged grass it’s tough to beat a lipless crankbait, and a dark worm pretty much always plays in the Sunshine State.

JT Kenney straight up smashed them on the final day to surge into second. His primary bait on the week was a green pumpkin Gambler Ace that he Texas-rigged with a 3/16-ounce Reins sinker and a 5/0 TroKar Big Nasty Flippin' Hook. On the final day, Kenney says that most of his giant bag was put together with a Carolina-rigged Ace and shad-colored Strike King Red Eye Shad and BOOYAH Hard Knocker lipless crankbaits.

Costa Renews Title Sponsorship Of Bassmaster High School Series

Costa Renews Title Sponsorship Of Bassmaster High School Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Costa renewed its title sponsorship for the 2017 Bassmaster High School tournament series, B.A.S.S. announced today. The company will also continue its supporting sponsorship of the Bassmaster College Series. This will be the third consecutive year that Costa has partnered with B.A.S.S.

The Costa Bassmaster High School Series has grown dramatically, currently involving more than 5,500 student athletes representing 600 schools in 45 states. The program is one of the fastest-growing initiatives within B.A.S.S.

“We’re extremely proud to once again be the title sponsor of the Bassmaster High School Series,” said Melinda Hays, Costa’s Bass Community Leader. “Watching the huge influx of young people entering the sport of bass fishing is exciting, and we’re happy to help this positive movement.”

The Costa Bassmaster High School Opens sometimes attract more than 300 two-person teams, each accompanied by an adult “captain” who operates the boat. The top competitors from the Opens, from state high school championships and from sanctioned team trails qualify for the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship.

“Costa believes that encouraging young people to get outside and fish is extremely important, not only to the future of our sport, but fishing also has the opportunity to teach them many life lessons,” Hays said. “Determination, hard work and persistence are only a few of those. We have an incredible opportunity for many new young anglers to develop a true appreciation for nature and conservation through these events.”

The Daytona Beach, Fla., company, which has produced some of the most popular sunglasses in the world since its inception in 1983, will sponsor all three Bassmaster High School Open events this year (Southern, Central and Midwest), plus a national championship this summer at a site to be determined. Costa will also be a supporting sponsor for all Bassmaster College Series events in 2017, which started competition in January.

“The Bassmaster High School and College fishing programs have expanded tremendously,” said Hank Weldon, senior tournament manager for the Bassmaster High School and College Series. “We’re pleased with the support Costa has provided in helping shape the future of our sport.”

The first Costa Bassmaster High School tournament of 2017 took place March 11, with competition on Toledo Bend Reservoir out of Many, La. New this year, B.A.S.S. extended invitations to the Top 5 finishing teams from this tournament to participate in the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster High School Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods on Lake Conroe, March 24-26, out of Houston, Texas.

FLORIDA’S YORK WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE BULLDOG DIVISION TOURNAMENT ON LAKE OCONEE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Gainesville’s Grizzle claims Co-angler title

[print_link]

EATONTON, Ga. (March 13, 2017) – Jeremy York of Pompano Beach, Florida, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 9 ounces, Saturday to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Bulldog Division event on Lake Oconee presented by Navionics. York pocketed $4,686 for his victory.

“I took off down the lake and turned into a little place where no one was fishing,” said York, a former FLW Tour pro who earned his first career-win in BFL competition. “I hadn’t caught anything there in weeks, but I pulled in and was able to catch a couple keepers off of a seawall.

“Those two catches told me what the bass were doing,” continued York. “When I caught them in that area, I knew I could concentrate on seawalls for the rest of the day. I fished in there for another 90 minutes, and then went to a couple of other spots that looked similar nearby.”

York said his bait of choice throughout the tournament was a green-pumpkin-colored Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver.

“I threw the Sweet Beaver up to the seawall and worked it back 3 or 4 feet,” said York. “I’m usually popping and shaking that type of bait, but on Saturday dragging it slow was the deal.”

York said he caught his biggest bass around 2:30 p.m.

“I fired the Sweet Beaver out to a seawall in one of my pockets and caught it,” said York. “It was just one of those days you knew where they’d be active.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Jeremy York, Pompano Beach, Fla., five bass, 20-9, $4,686

2nd:         Miles Burghoff, Santa Cruz, Calif., five bass, 17-10, $2,543

3rd:          Chris Baxter, Winder, Ga., five bass, 17-6, $1,962

4th:          Roger Stubbs, McDonough, Ga., five bass, 17-0, $1,093

5th:          Rob Jordan, Flowery Branch, Ga., five bass, 16-13, $937

6th:          John Christopher, Watkinsville, Ga., five bass, 16-2, $859

7th:          Steve Phillips, Douglas, Ga., five bass, 15-11, $781

8th:          Michael Conley, Bainbridge, Ga., five bass, 15-7, $703

9th:          Barry Stokes, Oxford, Ga., five bass, 15-5, $625

10th:        Barry Hooper, Monticello, Ga., five bass, 15-1, $547

Thomas Phares of Buckhead, Georgia, caught a bass weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces – the largest of the event – which earned him the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $690.

Harold Grizzle of Gainesville, Georgia, weighed in five bass totaling 15 pounds, 9 ounces Saturday to win the Co-angler Division and the top prize of $2,443.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

1st:         Harold Grizzle, Gainesville, Ga., five bass, 15-9, $2,443

2nd:         David Wright, Franklin, Ga., four bass, 14-4, $1,172

3rd:          Michael Smith, Piedmont, S.C., five bass, 12-11, $831

4th:          Ryan Stewart, Roswell, Ga., four bass, 12-9, $547

5th:          Ronald Harris, Jefferson, Ga., five bass, 11-6, $469

6th:          Chance Hebert, Norcross, Ga., five bass, 10-3, $410

6th:          Harold Addison II, Columbia, S.C., four bass, 10-3, $410

8th:          Bryan Price, Canton, Ga., four bass, 9-14, $351

9th:          Robert Gilliam, Macon, Ga., five bass, 8-9, $312

10th:        Deron Burdette, Fayetteville, Ga., three bass, 8-3, $273

Stephen Clay of Milledgeville, Georgia, caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing 6 pounds, 1 ounce, and earned the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $345.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 12-14 BFL Regional Championship on Wheeler Lake in Decatur, Alabama. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The 2017 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

Fifteen youth teams converged on the Chowan River near Ahoskie, NC for the third NC Bassmaster High School Series (East Division) event of 2016/2017.  Met with cool, post-frontal conditions, the teams had to dig deep into their bags of tricks to entice bites throughout the day.

DSCN4796

DSCN4719Chase Andrews and Tanner Beaman topped the field with the only five fish limit of the event weighing in at 13.01 lbs that was anchored by a nice 4.24 lb largemouth.  Andrews and Beaman used a white spinnerbait and green pumpkin jigs around cypress trees located in the Chowan to secure their victory.  The duo had only eight bites throughout the day, but those bites proved to be the right ones.  For their win, each angler received matching plaques signifying their win.

DSCN4736Nathan Canaday and Kyle Davis secured the second position with their catch of 6.53 lbs that included a nice 3.71 lb largemouth.  The tandem stated that they also targeted cypress trees located at the mouth of creeks using a chartreuse & white spinnerbait along with a black & blue stick worm.  For their second place finish, each angler received matching plaques.

Alden Patterson and Logan Jennings took the third spot with their catch of 6.29 lbs.  Evan Cain and William Mills III filled the fourth spot with their catch of 6.10 lbs.  Rounding out the top five included the team of Nick Mitchell & Trevor Lewis with their catch of 5.58 lbs.

If you could only catch one fish the entire day, Harris Canaday found the right one to catch, as he landed the single largest fish of the event weighing in at 5.12lbs.
