The iconic largemouth bass is one of the most popular gamefish in North America, known for its aggressive strikes and powerful fight. But behind the thrill of catching these freshwater predators lies a fascinating life cycle deeply rooted in science. Let’s take a deeper look into the key stages that drive the behavior of this remarkable species throughout the year.
Spawning Season: A Choreographed Ritual
As water temperatures climb into the 54-64°F (12-18°C) range, usually in late spring, largemouth bass enter their spawning season. This temperature cue triggers a flurry of activity. Male bass construct saucer-shaped nests in shallow areas, meticulously clearing out a safe haven for the next generation. Once prepared, the female lays her cache of up to 40,000 eggs, which the male quickly fertilizes.
Parental Duties: Against the Norm
What sets largemouth bass apart is the surprising level of parental care exhibited by the males. After fertilization, the females depart, leaving the male as the sole guardian. With remarkable dedication, he remains at the nest, fanning the eggs with his fins to ensure proper oxygenation and relentlessly defending against any would-be predators or intruders.
Within 4-10 days, depending on temperature, the eggs hatch into tiny fry. The father’s job isn’t over yet, as he continues to vigilantly protect the校hatch for another 2-4 weeks until they disperse and begin feeding independently on microscopic organisms.
Rhythms of the Season
The life cycle of largemouth bass is intrinsically tied to the changing seasons, influencing their behavior in profound ways:
Pre-Spawn Aggression: As spawning nears, male territorial aggression peaks as they vie for prime nesting sites and mates.
Post-Spawn Recovery: After the taxing efforts of spawning, both sexes enter a more lethargic recovery phase while replenishing their depleted energy reserves.
Summer Doldrums: The scorching summer months see bass retreat to cooler, deeper waters where oxygen levels are higher. Their activity may wane during the hottest periods.
Fall Frenzy: Autumn’s cooling temperatures spur increased feeding activity as bass bulk up for the lean winter months ahead.
More Scientific Insights
Sexual Maturity: Male largemouth can reproduce at a remarkably young age of just 3-4 months old, while females require 1-2 years to reach sexual maturity.
Indeterminate Growth: These fish are considered indeterminate growers, capable of continually increasing in size throughout their lifespan of up to 16 years if conditions are ideal.
Environmental Cues: Water temperature, light availability, oxygen levels, and food abundance all shape the behavioral patterns of largemouth bass across the seasons.
Understanding these scientific principles underpinning the largemouth bass life cycle provides a powerful advantage for anglers. It reveals the “why” behind their movements, feeding activity, and aggression levels throughout the year. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be better equipped to pattern bass more effectively and experience more success on the water.
Keeping himself near the top, the pro from Grand Rapids, Minn., weighed a third-place limit of 17-12 on Day 1 and held his position with a second-round limit of 16-11. Championship Saturday saw Fothergill charge ahead with his biggest bag, a limit of 18-1 that pushed him across the finish line.
“In practice, I was thinking the fish were residential, but I learned that they’re not,” said Fothergill, who earned his first Classic berth by winning the 2023 Bassmaster College Classic Bracket presented by Lew’s. “The key was just to cover water and make sure you’re putting your bait in front of as many fish as possible.
“If you found a spot and caught one fish off it, you could go back a half hour later and another one would be pulled on it.”
Fothergill’s final-round consternation stemmed from a heartbreaking Day 2 loss. After randomly finding a school of big fish under a dock on Day 1, he started the second day on that spot, but lost a 5-pounder and scattered the school.
Day 3 erased that pain with another random encounter — this time, with a triumphant conclusion. Naturally, Fothergill gave that special dock an early look, but the fish had inexplicably vanished.
Continuing on, Fothergill ran a few more of his key areas, but none produced. Around 10:30 a.m. he happened upon a particularly interesting point with a mix of mostly scattered rock.
“I wasn’t seeing anything, and I wasn’t catching anything, so I thought I should check something new,” Fothergill said. “That point caught my eye as I was running by it, so I pulled in there and the first fish I caught was that giant one.
“It was just a slow tapering chunk rock point with basketball-sized boulders on one side of it, and it had a super sharp break, which provided immediate deep-water access.”
The sweet spot, Fothergill said, was the thin line of bigger rocks that were dotted with big fish. Casting his Neko-rigged Strike King Cut-R-Worm toward that sweet spot, he came tight on an absolute Eufaula mud monster that went 8-12.
“I knew I was right back in it with that fish,” Fothergill said. “The fish jumped 4 feet out of the water and then it dove under the boat. I had to get on the trolling motor and chase him down a couple of times.
“I was super excited. I couldn’t put my worm back on my hook, I was shaking so bad.”
Prior to that fish, Fothergill used the Neko rig to box a small keeper on a rock pile near his dock.
After his massive kicker busted up the school, Fothergill let the point rest. Around noon, he gave it one more look and found another keeper on a nearby boulder.
At 12:45 p.m., he made his final move and filled his limit by throwing a Chatterbait over a shallow, wind-blown gravel point.
“When I caught my fifth keeper, I was thinking, ‘Okay, I got some EQ points,’” Fothergill said. “I had no idea how far an 8 3/4-pound bass would go.”
Hailing from Grant, Ala., Loberg finished second with 49-12. Focusing on the mid lake region, he turned in daily limits of 18-01, 15-4 and 16-7.
Doing most of his work on isolated rock just off the bank, Loberg caught his fish on a hand-tied custom-made football jig with a Yamamoto Flappin’ Hog, a Damiki-rigged Strike King Z-Too, and a dropshot with a 6-inch Roboworm.
“You really had to try and get it in their face in the muddy water,” Loberg said. “In the cleaner water, if you messed a school up, you had to leave because they were done.”
Connor Jacob of Auburn, Ala. finished third with 48-9. His daily weights were 14-3, 17-9 and 16-13.
“Going into this tournament, after last year, I heard how pressured the lake was and how brush piles get beat on,” Jacob said. “So instead of bigger brush piles, I fished smaller brush, shallower brush — anything that might not get hit as hard.”
That plan served him well on Day 1, but the second day saw Jacob establish a good marina bite. On Day 3, the marina produced four of his keepers, with his fifth biting on a stump.
A dropshot with a 6-inch Roboworm in morning dawn produced most of Jacob’s fish. A late day crankbait fish gave him a 1 1/2-pound cull.
Fothergill won the $750 Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 8-12.

Twin kickers give Faber Day 2 lead in Bassmaster Open at Eufaula
Adding a limit of 19-1 to his first round catch of 15-11, the pro from Pagosa Springs, Colo., gained nine spots and heads into Championship Saturday with a 4-ounce lead over Bo Thomas.
“I did the same thing I did yesterday, I just caught two 4-pounders today,” Faber said. “I started local and tried to catch one before I ran to the stuff I’d found in practice. I didn’t have any bites, so after an hour of that, I ran down to my good stuff.
“The first couple of spots I hit, I didn’t get anything. But then I caught a keeper, then I caught a good one, and it was a pretty good couple of hours. I poked around and tried to find something else, but all my weight came off my good stuff.”
Faber said he relied on a single dragging bait and did all of his damage on a point with multiple key spots sporting scattered brush and rock in 5 to 20 feet of water.
“My one (main) spot seems to have a concentration of fish there,” Faber said. “I caught two off of that spot yesterday and I caught three off of it today.
“I’m hoping we can catch five or more off of it tomorrow.”
Faber, who won the 2016 Bassmaster Team Championship (along with John Gardner), placed 12th at last year’s Open at Eufaula. While he’s optimistic for his final-round opportunity, Faber said he’s really not sure what to expect.
“It wouldn’t shock me if I didn’t catch a keeper tomorrow and it wouldn’t shock me if I caught another good bag tomorrow,” Faber. “I got my big fish and got out, so I’m pretty excited to go back.”
Hailing from Edwardsburg, Mich., Thomas is in second place with 34-8. Thomas had an 11th-place limit of 15-8 on Day 1 and added 19-0 in the second round.
“I had my limit around 9:30 (a.m.) and I was mostly done fishing by 10 o’clock,” Thomas said. “I did a little upgrading throughout the day, but it seems like after 11 o’clock, that big-bite window dies off.
“I haven’t gotten to fully experience what the spot’s capable of. After I caught my five and had enough to put me in contention to be in the Top 10, I kinda let off. I sat around (on my spot) and retied some baits, got the boat cleaned up and got a good sun tan.”
Targeting rocky bottom with logs, trees and stumps in 12 to 24 feet, Thomas caught his fish on a drop shot. He started with a 6-inch Roboworm in the morning dawn color, but switching to a Strike King Filler Worm yielded a better response.
“There’s a lot of bait in the area and with the water falling, I think the fish are actually coming to me,” Thomas said. “I think the bank bite is dying and that’s how I found this spot — I followed the white bass. On the first day, I just ended up stumbling on a bunch of big ones.”
Knowing he’s knocking on victory’s door, Thomas said: “Second place isn’t always a good look, but I’d rather be chasing than running. I’m really excited for tomorrow. I’m gonna catch ’em. I’m ready to go.”
Easton Fothergill of Grand Rapids, Minn., is in third place with 34-7. He turned in daily weights of 17-12 and 16-11.
Fothergill started his day on the dock that produced all of his Day 1 weight. He actually found this spot in the first round completely by happenstance.
“Yesterday, I was fishing one of my schools offshore, and I don’t know what made me turn toward the bank, but I did and I saw them on forward-facing sonar,” Fothergill said. “There is no structure under that dock; that’s the crazy thing. But they were there yesterday and they were there again today.”
Fothergill got his chance early, when a 5-plus-pounder bit. But when that fish shook off, the commotion scattered his fish. He put together his Day 2 limit offshore, but he’s hopeful his magic dock will deliver big final-round results.
“There were about 40 fish there yesterday and about 20 today, but they were all big fish,” Fothergill said. “If I can capitalize on the school tomorrow, fireworks could happen.”
Cody Meyer of Eagle, Idaho, is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 6-13.
Neil Beckham of Jacksonville, Texas, won the co-angler division with a two-day total of 13-12. After placing 10th on Day 1 with a two-fish bag that weighed 5 pounds, Beckham rallied and added a late-day limit of 8-12 to clinch the win by a 4-ounce margin over Oklahoma co-angler Jimmy Fellegy.
Beckham won the top prize of $8,387.
“I did not have a fish at 3 o’clock today, so I just put my head down and said a lot of prayers,” Beckham said. “I didn’t know what to expect (on Day 2), but my pro let me know we’d be out deep on isolated brush.”
Beckham caught his Day 1 fish on a 1/2-ounce red/black ChatterBait JackHammer with a matching X Zone Lures swimbait trailer. The second round required a changeup.
“At the end of the day, we went into a little pocket and I caught one on a Texas-rigged ribbon-tail worm,” Beckham said. “I switched to a Texas-rigged 5-inch X Zone True Center stickworm and it happened really quick.
“I caught my big one on the last cast — 3 feet from the boat.”
Kara Moss of Tyler, Texas, won the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award among co-anglers with her 5-2.
Saturday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. CT at Nichols Point. The weigh-in will be held at the Nichols Point at 2 p.m.
Coverage will be available on FS1 on Saturday at 8:00-11:00 a.m. ET. Also, Bassmaster LIVE will be streaming Saturday on Bassmaster.com.

2024 spring was unlike any other, this group is a special group of anglers. Consistence in numbers all season long even when the weather was not in our favor, but these anglers stood the test and kept the scales jumping. We appreciate you all, from the anglers to the spectators that make our events and weigh ins great. A huge shout out to Megs Men Incorporated for sponsoring lunch today, it is very much appreciated. Also, Nick Bashford for the sweet custom trophies from C-Stick / Ultra Tech Tool and Machine. Erik, the weigh master, words can’t even begin to express what you did this year man. Commitment and dedication i believe would be a bit of an understatement here. Not one event missed driving from West Virginia to be with the Yadkin Trail. I appreciate everything that you do for this trail man. I believe everybody is familiar with the kitchen committee now, Carissa Smith and Kari Murphy. They work great together as a team but have also proved they can work solo as well. Thank you both for what you do for us at the finals. Congratulations to all the winners! I will post the fall schedule in just a few weeks, again, thank you all for supporting the CATT Trail Yadkin Division!
Big Mike.
Jason & Rodney Thoms win the Yadkin Spring Final on High Rock with 5 bass weighing 20.25 lbs PLUS they brought in the BF at 6.62 lbs! They collected $4,570.00!
BENTON, Ky. MLF Bass Pro Tour General Tire Stage Six at James River Presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts will take place June 25-30 in Richmond, Virginia.
“This is a great opportunity for O’Reilly Auto Parts to support a fan-favorite outdoor sport, while also reminding customers that our expertise extends beyond highway vehicles,” said Hugo Sanchez, vice president of Advertising and Marketing for O’Reilly Auto Parts. “Customers can visit O’Reilly Auto Parts or oreillyauto.com for a wide variety of marine, agricultural and heavy-duty parts and accessories that we carry. Minnesota’s Jim Moynagh takes the Day 1 lead at the 2024 St. Croix Bassmaster Open at Lake Eufaula presented by SEVIIN with a five-bass limit weighing 19 pounds, 5 ounces.

Moynagh manages Eufaula for Day 1 lead at Bassmaster Open
The seasoned pro from Remer, Minn., said he took his best shot and paid close attention to the response from the bass. Doing so gave Moynagh a lead of 1-4 over Andrew Loberg.
“Practice was pretty sporadic and pretty sparse, so I went with what I thought would give me the best chance to catch a 5-pounder,” Moynagh said. “Things just started to develop and each bite became a feel for what I needed to do today.
“Every bite’s a clue and when you run into the right size fish, that (confirms your belief.)”
On a day when high heat and falling water presented tough fishing conditions, Moynagh was understandably guarded with his details. Noting that he stayed in one of the lake’s main basins, Moynagh said he fished a variety of habitat features, but none yielded much consistency.
“I caught eight keepers today and it was one here, one there,” Moynagh said. “I didn’t catch two on any one location.”
As Moynagh explained, the limited success he found in practice proved helpful — but more as a deterrent than encouragement.
“So much of practice I spent not catching anything, so I knew a lot of what not to do,” Moynagh said. “So, I kinda went with how I caught one that was about 5 pounds in practice. I didn’t catch many in practice. When I tried that pattern, I didn’t do that great, but I caught that one 5-pounder.
“Today, I went with that pattern, got a bite. A little while later, I got another bite. I was ecstatic because they were decent fish.”
With nearly a 4-pound average, Moynagh said his day exceeded his expectations.
“Realistically, I was hoping I could get 10 pounds each day,” he said. “On my best days of practice, one day I had 12 pounds, one day I had 10.
“Both of those days were in different basins. Today, I almost went to the basin where I had more bites in practice. I went to where I had fewer bites, but that’s where I caught the 5-pounder. I guess that was a good decision.”
Moynagh said two unspecified baits produced his weight. He had his limit around 10:30 a.m. and made his last cull with 90 minutes left in his fishing day.
“If I can just get five keepers tomorrow, it should be a decent amount of weight,” Moynagh said.
Hailing from Grant, Ala., Loberg is in second place with 18-1. Knowing he’d be facing a challenging scenario, he committed to a game plan based on diligence and probability.
“I just picked a few different spots and a handful of baits and really just ground away,” he said. “I was just keeping my lines wet.
“When the lake’s not fishing very good, you want to run around and hopefully find a better spot. But, in reality, you have to stay where you’re at and pick everything apart.”
Loberg anchored his bag with a 6-6. Despite seeing Eufaula’s potential during the days leading up to the tournament, he said his Day 1 kicker proved pleasantly surprising.
“I know there are big ones in this lake and I was lucky to catch a couple of them in practice,” Loberg said. “It was one of those deals where if you’re in the right area at the right time, you might get a good bite.
“There was definitely a lot of boats running around in my area and the pressure definitely got to them. But they live there.”
Easton Fothergill, a native of Grand Rapids, Minn., and a veteran of the powerhouse fishing team at the University of Montevallo (Ala.), is in third place with 17-12. Taking off in the 12th of 14 flights, Fothergill enjoyed the rare gift of fishing in nearly complete solitude.
“I was expecting a lot of boats in my area and I actually fished alone most of the day, which was super surprising to me,” Fothergill said. “I was boat 161 today and when I got to my spot, there was no one there.”
Fothergill said his area had five main spots. Rotating through his spots kept the him in the action.
Using a single slow-moving bait, Fothergill said his productivity started quickly.
“I caught a 4-pounder in the first five minutes I was there, so that was a super-good start,” he said. “Tomorrow’s a different day. I just have to go out and work on them and see how we do.”
Loberg is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 6-6.
Zach Roberts of Morris, Okla., leads the co-angler division with 8-7.
Michael Harp of Linden, Texas, holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 6-1.
Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. CT at Nichols Point. The weigh-in will be held at the Nichols Point at 2 p.m.
