Spro Fat John

Spro Fat John – The Four-wheel drive crankbait!
Spro has recently expanded their Little John series to include a fat (but still flat) crankbait. This bait isn’t just a bulked up version of the Little John, it is completely different with features such as a different bill angle, slightly longer length, and a fat body that creates a nice thumping wobble along with the elusive “hunting” action that generates more strikes.
The Fat John comes equipped with sticky #3 Gamakatsu trebles and a finish that is one of the most durable in the industry. This bait can be thrown just about anywhere there is water and it will come back looking pretty or with a fish in tow. The Fat John is excellent in and around wood cover so this will be a great spring time crankbait or one that works wonders on the region’s tidal fisheries. The Fat John will run two to three feet on fifteen pound line but you can downsize your line to get another foot or two out of it. Spro is offering this bait in eight of their best colors and should be waiting for you at your local tackle store or at www.Spro.com .

“The Stare down!- Note the differences in thickness between the original Spro Little John 50 (left) and the new Fat John 60 (right)”

“The greater degree of the bill angle on the Fat John allows for better deflection in heavy cover as well as a wider wobble than the original Little John.”

Finesse Flipping the Pre-Spawn

Finesse Flipping the Pre-Spawn
Everyone that has spent enough time on the water in the spring has had it happen to them. You are on a strong jig bite that seemingly disappears when a warming trend pushes the water temperatures around the sixty degree mark. The fish that were crushing a jig either won’t touch it or bite very finicky. Those fish haven’t left and you can still catch them flipping. When this happens you need go finesse….kind of.
When the water temperature creeps up near sixty degrees, I go to a more compact soft plastic for my bait of choice and downsize my line diameter. I like to go to a creature bait, like a Brush Hog or a Big Bite Baits Yomama. I also downsize my line from twenty pound flurocarbon to sixteen pound Sunline Shooter Flurocarbon on a 7’4” Heavy Quantum Smoke rod. Smaller diameter line is key since it gives you a better fall and allows you to control your lighter, more stream lined bait better.
In the next few weeks, when the fish get close to spawning, put the jig down and go flippin’ finesse. I bet you will get more bites and still have the quality to go with it!

Picture: Ralph Key from Roanoke,Va. (L) & Rich Hutchins from Huddleston,Va. (R) holding a nice striper caught 5-24-11 while fishing with Capt. Dale. The fish was released.

OVERVIEW: Most species of fish will begin to feed aggressively after they spawn. Later in June they will move into their summer patterns. Night fishing will be the best time to try your luck. Water temperature will be in the 70’s.

Largemouth Bass-Fishing will be good. Best lures will be large plastic worms, jig & pig, Thunder sticks, top water lures and drop shots. Most largemouth bass will be found around deep docks, humps, main channel points and rocky shorelines. Some largemouth bass will start to chase schools of bait early and late in the day.. Largemouth bass will start to move to their summer structures. Night fishing will be good.

Smallmouth Bass– Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be near humps, rocky areas and main points. Best lures will be jig & pig, drop shots, small crankbaits, top water lures and hair jigs. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Smallmouth bass will begin to surface feed this month.

Striped Bass– Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in various areas of the lake.
The best areas will be in the lower and mid sections of both rivers and the areas around the dam. Best lures will be top water lures, Red Fins, swimbaits, bucktails and Zoom flukes fished on 3/8 to 1/2 oz. lead heads. Live bait and trolling will also be productive. The best depths will be from the surface to 35 feet deep. Night fishing will be good. Some schools of stripers will surface this month.

Crappie-Fishing for crappie will be fair. They will be found 5 to 15 feet deep this month. Best areas will be in the main creeks around docks, fallen trees, and brush piles in the mid to upper parts of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ inch tubes fished on 1/16 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month.

TIP OF THE MONTH: The best time to fish will be early morning, later afternoon, cloudy days and night time. Try to avoid fishing days when there is bright sunshine and heavy boat traffic.
